Very interesting kickstarter, basically all they asked for was to pay 1-2 guy's rent for a year so they could focus on the game, and that's exactly what they did. Can't fault them for doing exactly what was promised, way better than most other kickstarters that ask for much more money and it all feels like it went to waste.

I actually was a part of this team for about 6 months, they were a nice bunch. There was certainly a lot of chaos behind the scenes, but I know the lead had ideas he wanted to put down in physical form. I was even shocked that upon joining there wasn't an NDA or anything, we were allowed to share the goings on with friends and encouraged to tell people about it. It was a nice bit of work and experience learning with the environment team. I hope they are having fun with their projects!

@davidjordan5389

@@LanArchy42 well, even though the team was nice there were many issues. We had to run all edits through the project lead before final submission because our map team lead left about a month or two after I joined, the editor for creating the maps was all done in a browser (for any that know the limitations of a browser you will know why having an environment editor in one makes this problematic), Only the project lead was working on the engine itself for bug fixes and adding features to the editor all other programmers were busy coding the game (to my knowledge). I believe the stress was getting to the boss as well since pretty much everything had to be approved through him, so sometimes there were strange changes he asked for. I'm wondering if the river that ran through my tile still looks as unnatural as I remember, because he said that the river changed width too much and needed to be a uniform width all the way through.. Considering mine was the only tile where he asked us to do this, mine looked REALLY out of place at the end when the tiles were stitched together. Don't know if they fixed it later or not.

I feel like more projects like this would be a lot healthier for the MMO landscape. Smaller games, that know what they want to be, and because of their tighter focus can have an increased sense of community. This probably isn't the MMO for me, but that's okay. It makes me hope we see more small MMOs like this, and that maybe one of these MMOs will be the one for me.
@TheSpeep
@TheSpeep Жыл бұрын
Honestly not just for the MMO landscape, just for videogames in general. These sorts of smaller, focused projects are where youll find most of both innovative new ideas and polished versions of existing ones. We need more games that are made because someone had a cool idea they wanted to make, rather than a checklist of features the market says are popular.
@sultan788
@sultan788 Жыл бұрын
More games that are more blatant, 1-1 copies of 20 years old tech; evolving backwards? I'd appreciate this being a small game and personal hobby/indie project in general. But there's almost zero reason to play this whilst Runescape exists, they aren't even afraid to remind you it's a copy every 5 mins. Where's its own identity/creative aspects Other games get flamed for being copies whether self aware or not. Just because this looks "retro charming" doesn't mean it's great in comparison to all the other copies If it grew into it's own thing then fair. But every project whether a musican, game or movie tends to fall when they just copy their inspiration rather than make their own out of it. Hopefully they be creative, but visuals all the way down to foundations within mechanics and elements are just Runescape but 20 years ago

The no-eating-during-combat and no-bow-animation ranged was also a feature in IntelliQube. Ranged and Magic were actually only used to initiate combat rounds since you couldn't use them while stuck in combat, so melee was the most important style. You would retreat after 3 rounds, eat, hit them with a ranged attack, and then lock back into melee rounds.

@@HeavySpark I don't think I am with this comment. The game is free, they raised a budget of just under 20 000 Dollars, after asking for half of it, they set realistic expectations and goals for their project, and they achieve them. They make incremental, steady progress, as outlined in the video and this isn't a braindead asset flip, like all of the NFT-MMOs, that began "development" in the last two years. They've set a goal, they achieved it. And it's not like complimenting a five year old child on taking 10 steps. Setting up MMO infrastructure and very clearly making everything in the code from scratch, even if the mechanics are lifted, is a lot of serious work.

It's a weird time for those things since Flash and Java web applets used to make browser games are long dead and mostly buried, so games like RuneScape had to migrate to a client to keep functioning, but at the same time newer web standards were developed and widely accepted that allow for making even better games in the browser. Good luck trying to migrate a 22 year old game written in java to javascript, wasm and webGL though lol, the entire client part (and probably a part of the server) would have to be rewritten from scratch.

As weird as it sounds I massively prefer smaller MMOs, some of my best moments in MMOs have been on servers where when you login every day and say hi in the general chat you get return helloes from people you know and perhaps enemies you fight a lot. If you could, would you do a video of a mmorpg called Grand Chase? I've played it since 2009 with my older sister and have very fond memories of it, they put it back on steam recently and saw it went down hill since I played. It was developed by the same devs as Elsword.

I just logged in for the first time. After recovering my account I guess I made in Sept 2021. And OMG the feeling I had when I logged in... I started playing Runescape in 2002 and spent so many hours on it. Logging into this game was like seeing an old friend I thought I would never see again.. Just an FYI - some things you pointed out that aren't similar to Runescape are infact similar to runescape. There was 30 inventory space in Runescape classic. Also the combat you couldn't run before 3 hits and couldn't eat while in combat. Pking was so fun in those days..

There's really only so much exploration you can do before you've seen it all in any given game. You can only be new for so long before you have to find something else that holds your attention about a game. It's not at all weird that the average WoW player, nearly 20 years later, is more focused on endgame progression than exploring. It's important to remember than up thru WotLK, the game was COSNTANTLY bringing in new players, so there were always new people learning the game and the world. When the new players stopped replacing those leaving out the back end, it's natural there'd be less of that mindset over time.@@unknowndev392

I actually like how their crafting system works, _but_ it needs to have more "recipes." Like make it so that if you start at the bottom and brute force your way up the tree then it plays how you presented it, but also have recipes that teach you the top-down way of acquiring certain specific things. In the process of following that recipe you discover other options.

Pro tip on story telling- you can create and use story tropes that are self aware and ironic to keep the story light and entertaining, but if you don't use those light elements to highlight serious emotional elements you are wasting a huge opportunity to create a good story. Stories like the anime One Piece and One Punch Man do this extremely well- overall the stories are light and silly right up until it isn't and that when it gets good. It's the contrasty between the silly and comedic elements that make the emotional moments that much more impactful. Movies like One Cut of the Dead, Kick Ass, and Serenity/Firefly all at with this dynamic with success. The Discworld series is the pinnacle of this type of story telling.
@LoserHands
@LoserHands Жыл бұрын
Without playing the game--disclaimer--I see the potential for this kind of contrast and it can be really good. It looks like there is a corporation that sells heroism, or introduces new monsters onto the game world, stuff like that? It could be a good theme, about how different kinds of heroes can exist for every fight. Like when heroics are impossible or make things worse (like The Feud) or seem that way (Morytania). Or how a truer hero might fight Cliche in a world otherwise teeming with monsters...electing some kind of thankless guerilleroism over a shtick...smthn like that. Idk.
@Scudboy17
@Scudboy17 Жыл бұрын
@@LoserHands I like your ideas and interpretation of the idea I was trying to get across but I was thinking more along the lines of emotional impact. If you know you are reading, watching, or playing something you know to from the horror genre, you will be expecting dangerous and horrific things to happen, so when it does happen it's basically just giving you what you already expect. Since you are at some level prepared for that, it hits you only so hard. But if you are playing a game that has the reputation for being silly and comedic you'll be expecting jokes and goofy content, but if that silly game suddenly hits you with horror elements or a serious jump scare it will feel much more impactful than that same jump scare in a horror game. Think of a jump scare as like jumping off of a cliff- when you expect that to happen, you are ready in guarded state so it's like jumping off of a 10ft high cliff- yeah, of your aren't in good shape it might to you a little bit, but it's not any real danger. But when you are playing a comedy game it's like you're on a much higher point- you're just giving and having a good time- elevating your mood so to speak, say at 20ft off the ground, so when you jump off that cliff you fall further and the impact at the bottom hits twice as hard, if not more. The Dragon Quest games are notorious for this- you're playing a light hearted silly jrpg with talking slimes and angry mushroom people but then all of a sudden your main characters significant other is suddenly kidnapped by demons, or the towns friendly mayor turns out to be a mas murderer killing children at night. On their own those dark elements are interesting, but when they happen when you're not expecting, it has a greater emotional impact.

The mix mash of styles is because they used different asset packs from online stores. I recognize Synty's in particular who sell art assets for Unity and Unreal. Particularly they're using assets from their Polygon Kingdom pack. I wouldn't have an issue with the use of packs, but I would say they could have been more selective in the style they chose and just stuck with one style. I find Synty's art to be very much their own and it doesn't mix very well with others, not that its a bad thing.

I like that the devs fixed the game immediately, whenever a dev responds to an issue a player has that gives them massive brownie points in my book. I've had devs of singleplayer games take a look at my saves and repair them for me and nothing endears me more to a game than a dev who cares even if the game isn't online. Guys when you start playing this game be kind to the dev and its players and try to become part of the community rather than destroy it because gems like this are rare and we don't want to ruin them before they can even reach their full potential.

Re the jokey style: you can make that work. I'm reminding of Diana Wynne Jones' book _The Dark Lord of Derkholm_ , which is a pastiche of generic fantasy novels --- the setting is in a fantasy world which is used by a tour group from _our_ world to run Lord-of-the-Rings-inspired fantasy tours, all done for real. It works because the fantasy world has its own history and people and hates this, but has to put up with it because the tour operator has a ridiculously powerful enslaved demon working for him. So it gets to be a pastiche of bad fantasy while _also_ telling a real story with real stakes. This game could relatively easily do something similar with its setting, so that as you explore you find out that the world's not supposed to be run by CLicHe and learn what it's really like.

Thank you for showing this game, it's delightful to see a team pick up a project inspired by the first MMO I ever played and fell in love with - it looks like they're doing a great job with it and hopefully they can polish off *just enough* rough edges to turn this into a real gem. Minor point of note because I'm a huge nerd for "classic PS1 games" - going from 30 item slots to 28 and adding an equipment screen was one of the big changes going from Spyro into Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, so even that was accurate to Genfanad's inspirations!

The trouble I have with Genfanad is purely being able to see more than two inches in front of my face. I simply can not bother to play a game that absolutely requires my attention to click the movement/forward button the entire time. Autorun is a staple in many other styles of MMOs and the way we get around this similar problem in uhh "X-COM: UFO Defense" is being able to click to run towards/do an action 10/15sec away from the next click. It's incredibly frustrating to need to click every two seconds just to walk somewhere or even see where the hell I'm going at all. This seems to be clunky behavior to give that 'charm' they're going for but to me it violates rule number one of game design.
