I think a better conflict for this movie would’ve been Steig’s sister coming in and being the “new tall girl” at school. Having Jody be the tall girl that everyone makes fun of, but then another tall girl comes in and everyone loves her. I think that would’ve at least been interesting vs forced relationship conflict and anxiety she didn’t have in the first movie.

What Dylan thought the Tall girl franchise should’ve been: “Tall girl 2. All of a sudden she’s taller. She’s 7 feet tall. She joins the NBA, but she’s not very good, she doesn’t play basket ball, and even though she’s as tall as the tallest NBA players, she’s still not good! And that’s the conflict of the movie! She should be good at something, but she’s still not! BUT! Turns out she didn’t stop growing at 7 feet! She’s now TEN FEET TALL! She’s taller than any NBA player. Dominates the league. Better than Micheal Jordan! TALL GIRL 3! She keeps growing! She’s bigger now! SHE’S THIRTY FEET TALL! Scientists don’t know what to do with her! The government’s like: SHE’S A PROBLEM!! *siren sounds* What’s that?! Siren sounds?! North Korea launched a missle?! A nuclear BOMB?! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?! WE’RE NOT PREPARED?! Tall girl steps up to the plane! SHES EIGHTY FEET TALL AT THIS POINT! CATCHES THE MISSLE MID-AIR AND- CALL BACK TO THE SECOND MOVIE WHERE SHE JOINS THE NBA- SHE JUMP SHOTS THE MISSLE BACK TO NORTH KOREA AND SAVES THE USA!” What it actually was: *“Tall girl with anxiety”*

Tall Girl could have actually been a good movie if her passion was to be a dancer, then we'd be rooting for her and also pissed that she wasn't reaching her goals and angry at people for pointing out her height as an issue. Tall people tend to have to put in a lot more work to do certain types of dance. But she's trying to regular stuff that height isn't typically a barrier to so we do not care. Anxiety wasn't an issue in the first movie so it's so disingenuous that suddenly she's having panic attacks 😑

The “second guy” trope in Netflix films is starting to get annoying. I got it with TATBILB because it was based on a book so obviously they weren’t gonna deviate too much from the book. With kissing booth, I also got it because I loved Flynn and I thought their relationship was still cute (still ship Elle and Flynn’s brother the most though, ngl), but tall girl? What a perfect movie to break the cycle. No one was crazy about Jodi and Dunkers. They have no chemistry at all. This would’ve been a perfect franchise to break that trope and have her actually end up with the second guy or maybe even neither of them. But nope. It’s a rinse and repeat for Netflix movies I guess. 🙄 there’s more interesting plots on Reddit AITA threads..

Just saying I had a friend who had a disability where her growth was completely uncontrolled, its the opposite of dwarfism (giantism). She was like 6 foot tall in elementary school. She had to undergo loads of surgeries and they had to chemically stop her growth but she’s still like 7 foot tall now. It made her miserable. A film about that would have actually made sense. 6 foot tall for a girl is not even that tall
@mariannestrgzr93742 жыл бұрын
I'm 6ft tall, and obviously my height hasn't made my life particularly hard in the long run, but it was rough to live during puberty. I always did feel like a freak, especially when I started being interested in boys, because the beauty standard for women is to be tall... But never taller than boys. There is so few rep for het couples where the woman is taller than the man, that most of us tall girls/very small boys grow up thinking it can't exist without being super ridiculous. I gaslit myself into thinking men smaller than me (so, most of them) could never think I was desirable, and even now I still have trouble owning my body. So of course I'm not oppressed in any way, but being particularly tall is a struggle for girls, especially during teenagehood. Aren't most coming-of-age rom com movies supposed to be exactly about that?
@lainpilled392 жыл бұрын
@@mariannestrgzr9374 I would understand the struggle in puberty but Jodie is a late senior in high school. The problem is that this film way overdramatises being tall because u don’t get random strangers saying hows the weather up there every 3 seconds. Also she was just 6 foot at age like 17, there definitely would have been some taller people than her in her massive high school. I think this film just comes off quite detached and ignorant considering how rich, conventionally pretty, privileged etc Jodie is. If they had just been more self aware and didn’t act like it was the end of the world then I think people might have been more sympathetic to her insecurities. It’s like making an entire film called ‘freckled girl’ and acting like a girl can’t get any man just because she has freckles. That’s probably gonna cause more people to be insecure LOL

@milamitova985 Жыл бұрын
As a girl who's 6'0 I hated every part of that movie while watching it. They made it seem like being tall is such a big problem and something that should define your life.... They castet short people for her parents and friends, just to make her seem not normal, while in reality her height is not that rare. In my school there are some girls with that height and a lot of guys taller than her..... it's just soooo unrealistic and not the reality of a tall person at all....

Sabrina's chess scene would have been funnier if her character realised how lonely she was, after she delivered the line. Or, she was aware of how lonely she looks, so she delivers "i didnt see that coming" saracastically. Otherwise we dont feel like its real. Also, is the movie that great if you need to voice the characters thoughts every 5 seconds? (twilight does it ok because it was based off the book series and it worked because it was a stylistic choice across each movie, but TALL GIRL DOESNT HAVE that. So its just random & feels out of place).

How they could have made her anxiety more impactful was simply have her anxiety come from a place that felt more in-character, like having her practicing for the show a bigger deal, have a first show that didn't go well, and her wanting to do better or something, and maybe instead of just having relationship conflict be there just because, have one of them make an actual mistake for the show, and the other one gets mad cause they made a stupid decision, example: short guy boyfriend was suppose to take pictures for something in the show (still sticking with the photography idea) but messing it up somehow and the first show didn't go well because of it, and now tall girl is mad cause she worked hard for him to mess it up, and now they can spend the rest of the movie working out how to make the final show better, and some of her anxiety could be from having a lot to worry about, and having a breakdown, then he sees it and tries to work harder for her sake, idk literally any sort of actual plot would have been better than this empty, emotionless, unfunny movie 🤣😪

As someone who struggles with anxiety and has social anxiety disorder, I really wasn’t happy with the way they presented her anxiety throughout the film. The voice was comical when it really shouldn’t have been as it makes light of very serious episodes. Towards the end of the film when she said that she got rid of the voice by ignoring it was such a stupid way to end it. It feels like they backed themselves into a corner with the plot line. They tried to include anxiety but had no idea how they were supposed to finish it. It was just a cheap way to present a serious issue many people, including myself, deal with. Sorry for the rant, great video as usual Dylan!
@VioletDegenerate2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. “Oh I’m all better now bc I did one play and was praised” that’s not how it works. They swept it under the rug making a very bad statement on how to deal with mental health.
@bbygirlx312 жыл бұрын
I have social anxiety disorder and I also agree that this movie was quite terrible. But in their defense, I don't think they were trying to imply that she has an anxiety disorder. The little voice sounded more like a person just having normal anxiety, the way someone would have when taking a test or asking someone out. Everyone experiences a little anxiety here and there, it doesn't necessarily mean they have a have anxiety disorder. Just my opinion
@alexandrabrown0682 жыл бұрын
Ehhh the movie wasn’t all that but give credit where it’s due. I wouldn’t say that voice was comical at all, just too mean girl-like when that trope was already being used through Kim and in every other teen movie. It was realistic though when they built up her anxiety about performing because that makes complete sense. Her first anxiety attack was a little too short lived with the pacing but I mean so were other parts of the movie lol. And she never ignored the voice, she said she found a temporary way to turn it down with self affirmation. That brief moment where she talked to herself logically and lovingly made sense because it’s a therapeutic technique called positive mindfulness, which was one of the first exercises my old cognitive behavioral therapist gave me. Anxiety was a side highlight in this film but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t accurate.
@MarcyStevonshy2 жыл бұрын
THIS!!! I knew the moment it was introduced that it would be some silly thing she gets over by the end. If you're going to explain what anxiety is to your young audience, maybe don't frame it as something that disappears after you give a good performance/speech? Especially since this was her OPENING NIGHT, meaning she'll have to do weeks more performances where the voice would STILL EXIST and be a problem for her.

@tonichan892 жыл бұрын
They just had to make her rich too, for some reason 🤷♀but afaik it doesn't play into the plot or her character? The "flaw" she does have (according to the movie) is also so contrived. She had other flaws, but the movie didn't recognise them as such, at least not out loud, like hos she seems kind of shallow, tonedeaf, selfish... etc. I've watched several reactions to the first film and this one, and I can't recall her doing anything nice for someone else, or with someone else's best interest in mind, cus she's too self-absorbed. It's everyone else who are constantly thinking about her. A nice arc would've been her ending up realizing she's not the center of the world and that actually makes her feel less stressed out about her height, and just her self-esteem in general; she had thought everyone stares at her and judges her all the time, but in truth, nobody cares because they have their own problems; she learns to get out of her own head and to pay more attention to others, be a better friend/person/listener. Or something! That's a pretty common arc for young people if I remember correctly; coming out of teenhood, your perspective shifts to be less self-centered, typically. As for her relationship with the Dunkarooni, I mean... he had hyped up what a relationship with her would be like for years, and it might've been interesting if there is a whole thing around the actual relationship not being what he thought it would be, it was all built on daydreams and what he thought they would be like as gf/bf. Turns out, they have very different preferences and love languages. Wupps. They seem so incompatible, this is what I think would've realistically happened with their relationship after they got together.😐 Again, I haven't seen the films, just reaction videos, so pinch of salt, yadiyada.
@Arvak2 жыл бұрын
And even if they did want to make a movie about the struggles of being a tall girl, it should be about insecurity and difficulties fitting in, but they barely touch on that in either of these movies. It's just so focused on "Oh I gEt So MuCh UnWanTEd ATtenTIon (even though I'm hot and rich)", but I can tell you as someone who grew up being a tall girl myself that it isn't about the attention, it's about feeling like you stick out like a sore thumb when you're in a crowd of girls, hunching over to avoid standing out, and generally being self-conscious of your appearance all the time. Also the struggle with femininity, because when you're bigger than all the other girls it can be hard to feel feminine.

@@tonichan89 RIGHT why are all the girls in these Netflix movies so damn rich?? It bothers me so much that they decided to give Jody this "negative inner voice" because clearly the show runners knew the critique that audiences gave about Jodi complaining about being tall when there was so much worse etc. They even addressed it in this movie, so it's obvious they were aware of the criticism. But they instead decided not only to attempt to combat that criticism head on, but to give Jody this never before witnessed inner voice, to ... what? Give her more pity points? Anxiety is not a character trait you can just tack on to someone that hasn't been pre-established to have it, with no reason other than to make her seem more sympathetic to your audience. 😡
