This looks very strange for an MRE. All cold foods, no heating, low calorie. Is it perhaps for a very hot place where water is not abundant, like a desert ration? Seems that way, considering the food is so light and not calorie-dense like the usual fare.

Thank you for your service to the USA !!! Watching from my "secret" retirement location in the Philippines. In the past ten years, only one time did our local supermarkets offer tuna packed in foil/mylar as we viewed here. I had planned to use the product in the "young'uns" emergency /disaster bags to keep weight down. Once out of stock, like so many other imported products, it never came back. We do have both "normal" size cans and half size single serving cans of spring water pack, veg-oil pack, packed in pure olive oil and many flavored varieties. Spicy tuna, herb & garlic tuna, corned tuna, lemon-pepper tuna, even calamansi (a small citrus fruit) flavor, in all major supermarkets. Tuna is a big industry here but I guess our packaging technology lags behind?

Back in 1981 I joined the Army Reserves at the age of 16, half uniform was BDU the other half was olive drab. We still had steel pots to take a bath , rather than Kevlar and we also had C- rations, we would heat up our tin cans of food on the manifold of our engines. When I went active duty in 83 upon graduation from high school we were introduced to the Kevlar helmet Humvees and we traded in our cut vees for hemets. I was the army combat engineer so in other reserves or active duty I was still issued the 45 caliber grease gun a stamped metal pumpkin tosser that was all but useless past 60 yards. I'd say the worst meal ready to eat was the beans and weenies. I could choke down the beans but the weenies taste like chalk and had a similar texture. Oorah

LOL! This is HILARIOUS! A battle-hardened soldier out in the field, stopping momentarily hunkered down in the foliage of the deep-jungle. Yes, the enemy all-around, but refueling your body to remain in optimum fighting condition is PARAMOUNT to hold the line. The warrior pulls out the MRE, with stealth precision, slowly tears it open, empties the contents on a nearby treestump, and ....WTH??? Is that Charlie the gd Tuna?! A cartoon fish on the packaging does little to embolden one to maintain fighting prowess, but nonetheless... and then - Reese's Pieces?! A bright orange candy wrapper easily compromises any attempt at a camouflaged position. The enemy has surely spotted you by now, but they aren't shooting at you. Is that....laughter???

Brand name Tabasco was included instead of generic hot sauce. I guess it doesn't matter so much today with troops getting packages from home so frequently. Perhaps the ration was badly stored. High heat areas can do weird things to the packaged foods. Our local Navy Commissary sells decade old MREs in poor condition for just $10 each!

Unfortunate about the Lemon Pound Cake. That one is pretty good. This is one of the weaker MREs IMO in general however when it comes to main courses. I'd likely eat everything but the tuna.

Y’all should rank the mre’s in a chart for best to worst; like the calories chart

That's a good idea. So much depends on how hungry you are though. At least I think that affects my review sometimes. TFW

There’s a lot of mres that use commercial products. I’d say most of them do. The uk and Australian mres especially. But many countries use commercial products. Tuna is very common in Israeli mres and the Mediterranean countries like Morocco.

I went to look up the ingredients for fat free mayo, and found an interesting article from July 27, 2021. Kraft announced they would discontinue after 30 years their fat free mayo because it "sucks." Here are the ingredients, so might explain why sweet if the mayo you had is Kraft or a similar brand. Water, Modified Cornstarch, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Vinegar, Soybean Oil, Contains Less Than 2% of Salt, Natural Flavor, Cellulose Gum, Titanium Dioxide (Color), Lactic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Egg Yolks*, Mustard Flour, Phosphoric Acid, Vitamin E Acetate, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Beta-carotene (Color), Dried Garlic, Dried Onion, Blue 1, Yellow 6, Potassium Sorbate and Calcium Disodium EDTA (To Protect Quality).*Trivial Source of Fat and Cholesterol

The actual truth could be because after 30 years the truth that fat doesn't make you fat is coming out, the truth is it's sugar that makes you fat. When I cooked in my folks cafe in the 70's we made sandwiches for the forest service fire fighters, they wouldn't let us put Mayo on them, had to use Butter, the fighters hated Butter, theory was that Mayo would go bad and make you sick, but the truth is it's got enough vinegar/acids in it, it's acidic enough that it helps preserve food rather than make it go bad, it's usually what you ad to the Mayo or put it on that goes bad long before the mayo. Mayo gets a bad rap but is actually healthy for you, has a good balance of fat and protein, you could "survive" on Mayo alone if you had to. Years later the forest service even changed their rules and allows Mayo on sandwiches.

I believe it. They sold all the left over fat free mayo to the government and the government fed it to the troops. That's very interesting. Thanks for posting that. TFW, Bryana.

When in the Canadian forces, I remember a joint exercise with the 10th mountain division in fort drum and as we always did switched MRE’s and my first day for breakfast, I got tuna casserole. I like canned tuna but from that day forward, I have never eaten tuna casserole no matter who made it. A man got principles and tuna casserole for breakfast is disgusting! Canadian IMP’s at least have breakfast, lunch, dinner meal plans.

not the USMC MREs. At least not in my day. I got used to skipping breakfast lots of days, unless I could trade for a good one that would pass for breakfast, like sausage Patty

In the field, the tuna isn’t too bad. I just never get full, as compared to beef strips or goulash or any other of the MRE selections.
