Honestly, I’m not a big fan of YA. I’ve only fully enjoyed reading two YA series, Six of Crows and The Infernal Devices. I guess what I loved so much about Six of Crows was that Kaz always kept things away from the other crew members, meaning he also kept them away from the reader. Once you thought you knew exactly what was happening, he revealed something or did something smart which left you shocked. Also, I enjoyed that even though Inej and Kaz seem to love each other, they never really developed an actual relationship. The series wasn’t love driven, but very plot driven.

I’m so pleased I watched this. I was nervous, seeing Six of Crows in the thumbnail, because I loved it and it prompted me to read everything else by her I could lay my hands on. But “not to my taste” is fine, and now I want to watch your YA piece (because I felt SoC avoided my least favourite YA tropes, so interested to hear your take). Seconding your view on the Iron Druid, although I’m not a big fan of Dresden either. I mean, I’ve read the whole of both series, but mainly because my brain needs something to focus on when getting ready to sleep (that isn’t anxiety and existential terror) and they can both do that, rather than because I think the writing/plots/characters are particular standouts. Otherwise thanks for the warnings for the other books, and I agree with your dad about the importance of the right reader.

Speaking of series: one of the things I love about the Discworld series is that it isn't written as a series. Terry Pratchett just wrote the stories he wanted to tell using the characters and world that he had created. If the existing characters couldn't tell the story he wanted to tell he made up new characters and sometimes new places in that world where he could tell the story. Every book is a complete story that happens to take place in an existing world. And every book is a story that Pratchett wants to tell. He never got stuck someplace he didn't want to be because he didn't limit himself to one set of characters or one type of culture.

Six of Crows (and Crooked Kingdom) is among my top 10 favorite books of all time but I completely understand your opinion on it. When I read it for the first time I was the exact target demographic, 16 year old girl who read almost exclusively fantasy, so it wormed its way into my heart pretty easily 😂

I'm curious to see your thoughts on Nevernight when you try it again. I'll be reading it for the first time early in 2021

Great video! Loved your father‘s guest appearance. Now, I have to get the Stephen Frey Sherlock Holmes version too!

I might be wrong but many of your theatrics, feel to me, a way to cover your nervousness, and I'm totally not blaming you, I'd be the same in your place, but your dad seems to have this genuine confidence that only comes from being comfortable in your own skin. It's a pleasure hearing from him.

YES! Not the only one who loves the Complete Sherlock Holmes! It was getting lonely at the top. I first read the printed version years ago, purchased an audible version by (forgot the reader’s name), and tried to decide whether or not to buy the Stephen Fry version. Then wonder if wonders, miracle of miracles, it showed up in my “included with your account” list! I downloaded it and have listened to A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, and only regret not hearing it sooner! Looking forward to continuing hearing Mr. Fry’s performance.

I hope Abercrombie sweeps the Fantasy Awards. Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and The Trouble With Peace are all books you read this year. And all three are brilliant works of art.

I started with best served called cold...really masterful... last act seemed too contrived... I think👍 writing is better here but I didn't come to love the characters like how I did in first law books..Glokta,jezal, Logan all were close to my heart .but here I kept hating them more as the story progressed..in a way..that is also credit to the author.... Anyway I've decided to catch up with the rest...

@@aldieb07 What was reading Best Served Cold like without having read the trilogy first? Were you ever confused about certain things or felt you were missing information?
@aldieb074 жыл бұрын
@@coleton7048 I read first law books long(7-8 years) back.. n best served 3 months back .so my exp was as good as first time reader. But I could really feel the chills when glokta was mentioned indirectly. I didn't need to refer wiki or anything to jog my memory. You need to read First law books. It maybe underwhelming in a world building perspective. But characters are🔥🔥love'm all... But I don't think I will cherish Monza or any character in this book. Maybe friendly😀 . If we ever get a series out of this...there could be a friendly meme fest😄😄 " Apologize to my f**ng dice"😂😂😂 l lmaof when I heard this( I listened to an audio book).. I just noticed your profile name...mr. banker😀😀

Oh god, that tongue! *Shudders* Your father is lovely, and yes, the Stephen Fry version of Sherlock is amazing. I do a lot of driving for work and listening to it made those hours much more pleasant.
