The fact that Reggie Jackson retired over 35 years ago and still holds the record for career strikeouts while overall strikeout rates have doubled since then is actually quite impressive.

Agreed. I thought of mentioning Reggie for the shameful distinction of most Ks lifetime, but then I would have to mention Nolan Ryan for his distinction of issuing the most walks. Jackson's lifetime strikeout ratio is lower than guys like Reynolds and Dunn, but man, Reggie struck out A LOT.

If Stanton stays healthy he could beat this one.

It was incredibly tough for fielders back in the 19th century. Teams during games of that era would usually combine for around 20 errors per game. Players might as well have been using oven mitts because they were about as useful as the gloves they had back that era. Love your channel, just stumbled upon it now

Exactly! He made up for the k’s with his 40 homer and 100+ walk seasons.

I am a Yankees fan, but I suppose not a typical one. My favorite "worst of all time" is the fact Derek Jeter is the worst defensive fielder of all time according to advanced fielding metrics. He has like a -150+ DRS !!!

It totally blew my mind to learn to the truth of how poor a fielding shortstop Derek Jeter was in the middle aughts. He posted fantastic fielding percentages and had a horrible range factor.

@@thebaseballprofessor How did he have a horrible range factor when there's videos of him diving into stands and leaping into the air to turn DPs etc!?
@thebaseballprofessor10 ай бұрын
Jeter was bad, but he looked good doing it. We can remember his terrific off balance throws, his diving into the stands, and he rarely made errors, BUT he had significantly fewer putouts than his peers. In other words, he was constantly diving and not reaching ground balls to make assists and help the Yankees win. In contrast, Alex Rodriguez was a far superior shortstop.

😂 That was awesome! No nominees for players or even managers, but I have multiple candidates for "worst owners." 😎✌️

John Fisher - the current owner of the A's comes to mind.

Harry Frazee has to be in the discussion. It's not just that he sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, but part of the deal was a loan that put Fenway Park up as collateral. The Red Sox actually paid more interest on that loan than what they got in cash for the Babe. He, in effect, actually paid the Yankees to take the Babe off their hands!

@@thebaseballprofessor Actually, after you replied (Thanks!), I posed the question to Google's new-and-improved Bard/Gemini AI system. I asked for the five worst ball club owners, ranked. Turns out there were a few I had missed or forgotten! Thanks for the inspiration and a reason to give the technology a try! ⚾😎✌️

In 1964 there was only a Major League Cy Young Award so technically Chance won THE Cy Young Award, not the AL Cy Young Award.
@thebaseballprofessor9 ай бұрын
Good catch. It's somehow easier to remember 1973 as the year of the DH in the American League than 1967 as the year when MLB started issuing the Cy Young to both leagues.

Maybe not THE worst, but Maury Wills was the worst manager the Mariners ever had. There's a few good stories out there, like the time he ordered the grounds crew to help him cheat by extending the batters boxes about two feet. As though the ump wouldn't immediately notice.

IMO, you could do the WOATs for every position individually, maybe with three categories each. For example, 3B -- Woat errors, Woat BA, Woat whatever you want. Your channel kind of reminds me of before the internet when I would eagerly await my mailed copy of a certain publication during the Hot Stove season. You're my Baseball Digest.
