Maybe this is "the worst photo critique ever" - but I'd rather say this is one of the BEST videos ever at helping advance and improve compositional techniques. I don't know how much of this was staged, but hearing the advice from another professional looking at the photos of a peer was so informative. This was one of he best educational videos I've seen in a long time. And then to top it off, the presentation / format was terrific. And Blake - you're a great "straight man" for Gavin's comedy! You two were a great pair for this. Seriously, you need to consider doing more of these (but then again, it's hard for the sequels to come close to the original - but give it a try!!).
@f64Academy4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We have worked together a few times and we enjoy each other... I think ... Nothing was staged. All straight forward, one take, camera rolling transparency 😁 thank you for the wonderful feedback

In my unpleasant role as the ultimate judge I am sorry to somewhat disagree with you here, Gavin. Blake's image with the strangely shaped subject in the foreground is way more interesting than the upper half would be isolated. Haven't we seen enough mountains tipped with orange light to demand something of extraordinary interest in the foreground - even what seems to be the shape of a tremendous dismembered body is comforting. I agree in your critique/advice regarding the first and last example. "Constructive critique" is when you in a polite fashion totally deconstruct another photographers dearest images. That's the beauty of such conventional agreements.
@f64Academy4 жыл бұрын
I see where he was going with that second image of the pinnacles. I do like the end resulting image I made and have grown very fond of it the way it is. I would find it very difficult to part with the foreground even if it is a lump of dirt :)

@@fototripper Don't miss this part, Gavin: "...to demand something of extraordinary interest in the foreground". So far your foregrounds have been sufficiently extraordinary ;O) And be aware of this psychological phenomenon - I, me, myself was not there to be stung by bloodthirsty insects, to inhale the fresh mountain air, to have my feet wet, to have my skin tinted from the special high altitude sun quality, etc., etc. Those parts are "colors" in your photographer's perception of your own images that your audience never see.

I thought Blake’s photos were just fine (except the HDR first one). Gavin’s takes would also work but different strokes for different folks. Nothing bad about getting your work critiqued but keep your own unique vision. Most of our photos are for average joe viewers, not art-house photo critics.
