Jag tech again you can check oil level via your instrument cluster, sorry to see the hurt engine if you came into the dealer I’d quote you a motor all day, if this was on my jag XFR I’d roll the dice and do a tear down and see if head or block actually cracked, it all really boils down to what’s more valuable to you time or money, and I’d pull out the top like you want it’s much easier, torque converter bolts are about the hardest part about pulling the engine on these cars, also your charger has most definitely been off before they don’t use paint marks on the intercooler bolts from factory as well as your coolant pipes under the charger have been replaced before. Looking forward to the next video!
@AndrewAMartin
@AndrewAMartin 2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanfarnum1488 Pulling up the level on the cluster is fine, but it doesn't allow you to see the condition of the oil itself. Having to open the drain is a pain in the ass, especially without a lift, if all you need is to see the oil. That just turns a 30 second check into an actual job. Poor design choice, Jaguar...

I’d do an engine just because of the milkshake. It sat with that in the pan for how long? Those bearings will be damaged just from that. I do want to see the head off, but that looks like erosion which I’ve never seen from a blown gasket
@joequixotic3039
@joequixotic3039 2 жыл бұрын
You have to pull it any way. After it is out, pull the head, if it looks mangled, put it back and get a new motor. If it looks saveable, pull the pan to check the bearings. If it still looks saveable pull the other head, then decide on rebuild or replace. It's a few more hours work and might delay a replacement a few days if you go that way but you might save $5,000 too.

If an engine is really $8000, AND you find after pulling the head that the wall is in fact damaged... I'd price out how much a resleeve would cost on the one cylinder. A grand in machine shop time and a grand in gaskets and timing bits sure beats $8k
@tschuuuls486
@tschuuuls486 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Pretty much standard procedure in Germany. Rip block apart, machine shop either can laser-weld the block or put sleeves in. Then you have a zero mile engine after replacing main bearings, and timing chain+guides and checking cylinder heads. A junkyard engine is a gamble. The problem with a rebuilt is, you have to do it right and measure critical tolerances otherwise it probably runs worse afterwards lol.

oof ... I was really hoping this wasn't the case. I've seen a number of Jags that not only have head gasket issues, but warped blocks, making the gasket replacement useless anyway. A new/refurbished engine is probably the way to go. I can't imagine how mad I'd be if I changed the head gaskets on one of these and it immediately started aspirating coolant again.

I find the attempts to repair at a lower level (e.g., head gasket rather than new engine) much more interesting. Even learning how to do engine machining in-house, etc., would be more fun for viewers than just swapping power plants. Matt on Diesel Creek has no compunctions about diving into oil pumps and other components rather than just ordering from the parts supplier. Great fun to watch. Of course, if your goal is to make $$ on the flips, as in days of old, that's a different story I guess, but why watch grass grow? What I'd really like to see is a KZbinr who was willing to learn how to do electronic module repair at the component level. You might be an ideal candidate for that, with your dexterity and IT background. I find myself wondering how often a blown module is just a blown cap or FET.

I dont think its missing a section of cylinder liner.. It looks like just a corrosion build up from it sitting for so long, and water getting in there. I think you could get away with a head gasket. Worst case scenario, put a head gasket on it, and pressure check it on it is still on the stand. If it passes, your golden, if it doesnt, you will only be out the time to put the head gasket on, since you are already pulling the engine. But if it works, you saved a lot of coin!
@simonilett998

Nah, I don't think it's a chunk missing from the cylinder wall, just looked like a droplet of water held in place by surface tension. You can see the reflection of the camera light in the droplet of water, and if you pressurize the cooling system you should see that droplet become a water fall. Also what looks like a crack in the cylinder looks more like just water staining, it's right in line with where the coolant has been getting in and trickling down the cylinder leaving the water stain👍🇦🇺

I think its the design of the combustion chamber that you are seeing. However due to the milkshake do we know how long the engine was driven since it could have shell damage also. If the sump can be removed, and just drop 1 big end that should give you an idea. If shells ok, just do the heads. If shells damaged too, then god knows what else has water damage.

I think my opinion echoes many here, you have to take the motor out anyway, why not tear it down while it's out and confirm what's going on. If that is a crack in the cylinder wall then it's toast and time for a new motor anyway, and you can slap it back together well enough for the core return. Either way, it's content for us to watch and enjoy!

Body is a Jaguar, Engine is from a GT500 ( coyote engine ) that has been de-tuned, gearbox is from ZF .... You're not paying garage labour rates, it's your time. So if you decide to pull the engine, then you might as well take the head off and look to see if it can be fixed with a new gasket or such before committing to a new engine. It's nearly impossible to tell properly from the camera if that's staining or a crack in the sleeve. Also a new sleeve is possible, so there's that too. Personally, I'd be tempted to pull the head in place first before going any further. If the engine needs to come out, then you're already part way through, if not, then you save some time.

Engine and trans come out from the bottom…. Don’t waste your time trying the top… don’t need a table to do it either…. It’s only blown head gaskets

blown gaskets cause no compression/crank?

Yep that engine needs a reman. On the other hand why not do something radical with it like a Viper V10 swap? Pretty sure it will still be cheaper than a Jag engine and it will not be a rolling cliché like an LS swap.

No on the LS swap, slap some voltage in there.

Impressive how you consistently put out videos almost every day versus channels that can't seem to put out a single video once a month that claim to be full time. Makes you wonder what the hell they're doing with their days.

Get Jake over and have him do a vid also! It could be interesting, and everyone would watch yours regardless, so getting two perspectives and two vids could be an awesome concept. Plus, make him do stuff and put that phone of his down.

Take a look at Eric the Car Guy’s channel. He had a video where built his own engine cart for cheap.

Hopefully its not a cracked head, you may want to have the heads checked at a machine shop?
