I’m actually so sad right now. They were only 12 years old, they were babies and they all died really gruesome deaths. Everyone did such a good job because I genuinely was so invested in the characters and it hurts that they died while not being at peace. Mackenzie never got the recognition she wanted from her dad and brothers, Mary never had a stable home, Tampa and Tabitha had families who will never know what happened to them, Knife died TWICE- I’m just so bummed but this was so good

I've been playing tabletop RPGs for a long time. Maybe it's just George being a master at what he does, but I'm super impressed by how well Dread's jenga tower mechanic combines tension with risk. It might even be ... better than rolling dice? No... it couldn't be. Unless?

It really gives some very interactive and visceral feeling to the tension, for sure. Especially how he incorporated stuff like one hand for the character missing theirs, or a jumpscare in line with the story.

IMO it depends on what kind of story you're looking to tell--using a block tower works really well for shorter stories with a clear end point (here it's death or survival, in another block-tower system I know of it's the culmination of a romance arc lol), but dice work better for longer-form games where characters have chances to grow and gain more skills. Tldr, it depends on what kind of story you're telling and what kind of time you have, if you ask me (an rpg nerd)

I like Dread a lot, but that's because I like the roleplaying/storytelling side of RPGs more than the mechanics. Dread is very rules-light, which spotlights the improv and story, while still providing tension, risk, strategy, and chance.

Holy shit, Amanda’s pulls were possibly the most clutch I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of Dread games. Even in the times it didn’t work, she couldn’t really help it. Great series; I’d have loved more episodes.

There has to be a sequel to this. Too many things unresolved. The girls can still make a come back. Tampa was only abducted, Tabitha was healed by alien tech like Knife was so maybe she can survive the axe, Mary could be revived idk. But Mackenzie is probably beyond saving.
