When I was a kid in the early 1960s, I remember seeing these ads in American comics in the UK. I recall seeing adverts for Romans, the American Civil War, and the American Revolution. I was always quite jealous because we couldn't get any in the UK. Now, looking at these pieces of plastic, I'm glad we didn't. Give me Arfix anytime!

I stuck with Timmee. You could get 98 good soldiers for a couple of bucks. It was advertised as 100 pieces, but you knew that was a flag and stand.

Still pretty tasty. They would make a good paint project to give them a halfway passable paint job that might give you some fun.

As a kid in the 70's I wound up with two different brands of toy soldiers. Pack A was a pack of bright green soldiers and pack B was more of a darker green. That bag was larger. But it made it easy to have two armies. I did get some vehicles too tanks, jeeps, artillery. It was a lot of fun running war battles especially out in my mom's garden.

The old "flat" figures wouldn't have been so bad if they'd all been in the same scale.

I got the Revolutionary War guys. After the initial disappointment, they were okay. Except if one guy fell over, he took out a bunch more. They were not paper thin, more like the thickness of cereal box cardboard.

Hey Iggy. I actually have a few of those flat figures. I have a tank ,truck and a few battleships. I always wanted the civil war play sets advertised in the comic books but never did.

I had a few dozen of those as a kid and adult collector. The 100 toy soliders for $1.00 I had, they were hard plastic and even thinner than these in the video. All Olive green color. This was out of a comic in 1984

Does this bring back memories, memories of a little kid now 75 years old, and the pain and the shocked disappointment I felt when my little small brown cardboard box of American Civil War soldiers arrived. There had to be a mistake, the box I was expecting had to be 10 times larger. It naturally got worse when I saw those microscopic flats inside. It was the first and last time I ordered anything from the back of a comic book. It did teach me a life long lesson, if it’s to good to be true, it probably is.

If/when I was a kid, I would (still) want at least four of all of these. Toys exercise the imagination. I wasn't then, nor am I now, 57 years later, spoiled or ungrateful.

Oh, yes, I remember those comic book ads for these cruddy "flat" soldier sets very well! It was pretty obvious from both the images shown and the very low price that those sets were total crap, with all the figures and ships, etc, being "flats" rather than 3 dimensional, so I never sent away for one. The well molded toy soldiers back then came mostly from Marx, and you could get them in your local stores at a good price. Anything that was advertised in a comic book was practically guaranteed to be absolutely lousy quality. The only thing I ever did send away for was a "live chameleon", and that turned out okay. After a few weeks a live Anole (a small lizard found commonly in Florida) arrived in a little container with air holes, and it had survived its trip in good shape. I had that lizard for the next 6 years or so, safely housed in a cage with screen on the sides, and it thrived on a diet of insects and small amounts of water sprayed on the rocks inside its cage. The toy soldiers I did have, almost all from Marx, included WWII Germans, Japanese, Russians, and Americans....Romans, "Alamo" Mexicans and Texans, a "Daniel Boone" set with settlers and Indians, and a few others along that line. Oh, also a Robin Hood set.

In the 60s, we were living off-base in Japan so we were unable to buy American toys at the PX like everyone else. Therefore, my friend actually ordered one of those comic book soldier sets and was extremely disappointed. The soldiers were so flat and skinny that the slightest wind would knock them down. You get what you pay for.
