Filipino (from Felipe) is Spanish, reflective of both the culture and the language left by the Spaniards. Our currency is also the Philippine Peso (PHP), similar to that of Mexico! P.S. The reason why we changed it to filipino is to acknowledge the proper spanish spelling, philippines is the one that america named us after they bought us from spain, but originally spain calls us "las felipinas" or "the felipinas" so technically we didnt really changed it we just return it to its original name while the countries name staying americanized.

I asked my flatmate about the Filipino thing when I was in uni. Apparently it's because the country's official was name is "Las Islas Pilipinas" for the longest time and the people were called "Pilipino". Around the 1980s, the letter F got added to the alphabet and so the name of the people changed to "Filipino" but the country's name remained "Philippines". There has been proposals to change it to "Filipines" for over a decade now but nothing has made progress.
