I’ve been following Tech since 2016 first pc I built i5 6600k 16gb ram his recommendation for gaming. I’ve never bought something Tech recommended and thought what a waste of money.

@@apoconkbm im not saying 64 is a bad advice. It’s a good one. But other advices are inconsistent or bad. E.g. he talks about how a 12 core cpu will run games 3 years later much better but when asked about future proofing he says upgrade less build more. Well why get a 12 core cpu if ull only use it for 3-4 years? 8 core cpu will be good. Get 12 cores if ull use it for 5-6 years and upgrade the gpu after 2-3 years. Old but high-end cpus still run fine today, even a 6800k runs almost as good as a 5600x.

In what game is having 64GB noticeable? I don't recall reading the system requirements for any game that recommends more then 12GB of RAM. Are all those game developers wrong? I don't think so. If you look at the Stats Valve makes available on its hardware survey, 90% of gamers have 16GB or less of RAM. Are all those games wrong? No. Without evidence to back up Byte Size Tech's opinion you have to exclude it as an outlier. Do we all want 64GB of RAM? Sure. Very few of us actually need it.

I decided to go with 32 GB instead of 64 GB for my new higher-end PC build, never really considered going to 64 TBH. I never leave a lot of tasks open, I got a weird case of OCD where I always want all windows closed, same on my iPhone. I do have a large amount of tray icons, running a lot of Asus and Corsair software bloat. It doesn't take up that much RAM. When I play Cyberpunk 2077 on my TV (2nd monitor) in 4K maxed settings, it all goes up to about 12 GB. The only time I ever see high RAM usage is when rendering in After Effects, but I don't do that on a daily basis. It was more important to me to get low-latency G.Skill 3600 MHz RAM and I don't think it would have only been 100 bucks more to go up to 64, especially at the moment with the inflated prices and stock issues. With regards to SSD, I couldn't agree more and this week put a second 1TB M.2 PCIE4 on the motherboard (Corsair MP600 with heatsink) - absolutely loving it!

But 64gb is for running 2 games at the same time or having 3 or more monitors and multitasking or for massively future proofing and not wanting to close anything on your computer, like ever

I was so surprised and still am after a few months at how much better of an experience it is. Frametimes are so much better, and I feel like I can have anything going with a game playing and it'll still run super smooth. I dropped 4 cores and 8 threads here on the CPU which is the insane part.

I was debating for a couple of months going from 32gb to 64gb of ram. Until seeing this, I actually started streaming my games 2 months ago. I’m streaming on a single pc setup, Ryzen 5900x, Evga 3080, and dual monitor setup (240hz & 144hz monitor). I usually stream Call of Duty Cold War and CS GO. When I bought the 2 additional 16gb of RAM to go 4x16 64gb my stream game play is so,so, smooth and I can average 230 FPS during my Cold War streams. It’s basically like how he describes experience and you do feel the difference, just like driving a car that has really good suspension and drives super smooth. I would still go 64gb even if I didn’t stream just because of how buttery smooth the game play experience is and the responsiveness of your movements are during game play.

I took your advice and had a disaster! :-( I have an i9 10850k with an RTX 3090, a brand new system with 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance 3200 mhz C16 RGB ram. Decided to replace that ram with 64GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB 3600 mhz cl18, the next one up in their range. 4 x 16 GB set. I then planned to put the 32 GB 3200 mhz in my old 7700k 1080Ti system to replace its slow 16 GB set. Anyway fitted the 64GB into my new system without a hitch, but it made my computer worse! All 3D Mark benchmarks dropped by a couple hundred points. Tried both XMP and XMP 2 profiles, made no difference. More worryingly, I've been playing Hellblade all week in VR (awesome game), and with the 64GB set I got more stutters and audio issues, Swapped back to 32 GB 3200mhz and better again. Swapped back to 64 GB, worse. This wouldn't have been such a big deal, just send it back. Unfortunately I aslo put the 3200 mhz ram in my old PC. Despite saying it could support 3200 mhz (Asus Prime Z270-P) it wouldn't boot with the XMP profile enabled. I decided to enter the timing manually and use the auto AI tuner tool in the bios. It booted and ran fine for two hours. Then I loaded up Google Earth VR. The system crashed with a blue screen and simply stopped booting. It all lights up but no display, and it won't go into the bios. I've tried all the following; Tried on two monitors, with different HDMI and power cables Reset the CMOS and taken the battery out over night. Removed the GPU, ram, Wifi card, all USB keyboard, mouse peripherals etc. Tried to boot with 1 stick of ram, in all 4 slots. Nothing works, computer powers up and lights up but doesn't recognise a display so I cannot go into bios. To add a final insult, in swapping the 64 GB sticks around on my new PC to see if that improved the stuttering one of the DIMMs stopped working, and now it only recognises 3 DIMMS and 48GB of ram. It's my DIMM slot that has broke, not the ram sticks as whatever stick I put in that DIMM the computer no longer recognises it. The computer is only 2 weeks old and cost me £3600 so I am gutted. I've put the orginal two sticks of ram back into my PC and it thankfully it works fine again, ran Timespy 3D mark and scored higher than the four attempts I got with 64GB on the first go. Meanwhile my old faithful 1080 Ti 7700k system is seemingly dead and I've exhausted all ideas as to how to revive it. Wasted £280 on the ram, an entire day and night trying to fix, and lost my old, but still very capable second PC. Pretty freaking sad right now :( From now on I'm taking the general advice of not to upgrade if your PC is already working perfectly, far more hassle than its worth.

I have just recently subscribed and I have to be honest. It is a breath of fresh air that you don't care about benchmarks. When you watch Linus tech tips or J's two cents. They show benchmarks but that doesn't really show what real world results well actually do. I understand they're just testing and pleasing their viewers but that's not going to help me. I was amazed a lot of Jay's two cents viewers would have the ram in single channel mode and they didn't know how to change the speed of the ram and these were people who had gaming PCs. Since I was new to the game, I was learning from everyone else's mistakes. But you're not lying, going full SSD is beneficial, especially if you're going to school and you're doing a little gaming on the side, I couldn't believe how fast the nvme drive is. I never had the pleasure to experience the beneficial of a SSD but I went full SSD, just because I could lol. And I have 32 GB of RAM but it's good and it's nice having a little extra room to breathe even if you're not fully going to use it all. But it's nice when you're going to school, that you can go full speed.

The thing with RAM is that it heavily depends on what you want to do with your PC. If you want to be able to hop in a discord call with your friends, run a RAM-Intensive game (games that recommend 16gigs) all while having Netflix open so you can watch parts of a show/movie in between games then 32-64 gigs of RAM is almost necessary. If you've already bought 32GB of RAM you're basically in the overkill zone anyways so spending an extra few dollars isn't going to hurt and you will notice that you can run more programs with the same fast speeds all at once. Now, there's another thing to consider which is the speed your RAM is at. I would take 8GB (4x2) of 3600Mhz RAM over 16GB (8x2) of 2666Mhz RAM if I really wanted to push those extra frames out, however, as I like to multi-task I'd sacrifice the extra 10-40 FPS. Case in point, it all depends on what you want to do and you shouldn't listen to anyone telling you what RAM you need or how much. PC means personal computer, you're using it not anyone else and so it should be your decision. What I will say though, the comments about 100% SSD systems I completely agree with. It's 2021 and the cost of HDD's are the same as SSD's, it's not before where HDD's were the cheaper option. Get one good 4TB SSD, I know it'll cost a leg but in the long run it'll definitely be worth it. Even SATA III SSD's are better than some of the best HDDs. That's just my two cents tho.

I run on Linux, (Ubuntu, fairly standard install, which uses less RAM than windows), have a single game launcher open at a given time, and prefer to do one thing at a time (so I typically close my browser out of habit when doing something else, say), and only use about 6-12 GB of RAM total system RAM at any given time in the games I play, and I still have 32 GB, because every now and then I want to run a virtual machine, play an unusual game, or play a game that goes well with a podcast, say. And I'm the extreme edge case of not needing much RAM for people with modern, reasonably specced PCs (at an RTX 2060 + Ryzen 3600 I think I'm around average for new builds), so if I occasionally need 32 GB of RAM, what does that say about people on Windows with who knows how many unnecessary programs running at the same time?
