I agree completely. The thing with Heretic was that it didn't just copy Doom. Heretic offered something new. It had powerups, there were enemies that had more than one attack, more enemy variety, new setting etc. Heretic took Doom and expanded on it. This is basically just Quake 3 without anything new.

Now Quake Live costs 15$ and Wickland costs 1$. For unexperienced I'd actually recommend Wickland, because it's hard to find players on your level in QL anyway. But I played Quake when it was free, so now I still have it :3

I agree the creatures should be more unique from one another with their abilities. I was expecting more when I played it and maybe it would be better if the creatures were permanently separate from each other too to have more of their own play style.

Oh man I LOVED Heretic and Hexen. Those were some of the first shooter games I played on PC. I NEVER buy multiplayer only games anymore. I've gotten screwed too many times, especially with smaller titles, where all I end up with is something unplayable because the community dwindles down too quickly as people move back to cod, battlefield, team fortress, or whatever else they play. Blacklight Tango Down, I bought that game years ago and I'm still pissed off and bitter about it. Match making was completely broken, couldn't find a game even after 10-20 minutes of searching, when you do find a game there is no match making it felt completely random since you would play against some people who are 20-30 levels above you. Lead and Gold, absolutely loved the game but I wish it would go free to play so people can actually come in and play it. But because the game become mostly unplayable after a while I just don't bother with them anymore. Guns of Icarus is the only one I've bought recently that hasn't died because it had a lot of people backing it and advertising it so it's still thriving.

Heretic had some really awesome level design in terms of action and flow. Hexen was cool but instead from its atmosphere and style.
@Ganondorfdude1110 жыл бұрын
I would recommend Ziggurat for your "modern Heretic-style game" fix. It's rather short but challenging, designed around replayability with multiple perks, characters, and weapons that are random each playthrough. No multiplayer, however.
@Ixnatifual10 жыл бұрын
I did look at Ziggurat, but the gameplay and level design looked bland and boring to me, unfortunately.
@Ganondorfdude1110 жыл бұрын
Level design is random each time. A new update just added more rooms so it doesn't look the same each time you play.
@Ixnatifual10 жыл бұрын
Yes but it always generates boring levels that are big flat square room, narrow flat hallway, big flat square room, narrow flat hallway, big flat square room. Compare that to the first level of Heretic which despite being small has a much more interesting gamespace to fight and explore in: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2rMiJ6Nidtno8k

I definitely agree with you, it also doesn't help that the next Unreal Tournament is going to a model similar to Quake Live, and even if the next UT fails it's not like the original UT is dead. There are multiple games like this popping up on Steam now, and I do appreciate people wanting to create a classic shooter but I'd rather them try and create an old school single player shooter (And a real one, not the Serious Sam/Painkiller style, I like those games but those aren't * true * old school shooters. I mean something more like Doom, Quake, Duke NUkem 3D Etc.) than an arena shooter.

i appreciate the style. i love dark fantasy but the guy is right. Its practically a copy of quake with a reskin. The only thing i dont like about the game is the lack of bunny hopping. Im so used to that mechanic in AFPS games that i kinda feel handicapped without it. I might be playing it and recommend it (especially now with the price of 1€ and quake live being 10€) if the player base is alive. Its a damn shame this game is so dead. I saw the steam reviews but i just had to get it out of curiosity.

@WorthABuyreviews10 жыл бұрын
Yup Think Heretic was first then Hexen, may be wrong, I do remember not really liking them though, every game seemed to copy the success of Quake but none other than UT have ever really matched it.
@dponly10 жыл бұрын
Well you're right, Heretic was first, then Hexen, but given that they were made by the same people and more to the point, made before the game you're saying they were copying, how would they be copying the success of Quake? They were designed as mainly single player experiences whereas Quake was more universal, surely? The closest I seem to remember one of those games coming to the other was Hexen 2. Heretic 2 you might have been right about but no one ever really gives Heretic 2 a look in

Pluto Franco The game has two modes, FFA and Duel I played FFA as there were no duel servers up, the game was not meant solely for duel it is like Quake, it allows both Duel and FFA and I did very well playing like I did in Quake. Sorry but you are 100% wrong in everything that you said. If you actually read what the Devs said in the description you would know this.

Sadly you review a game that you don't even have played properly. In your footage there is a) not a single walljump b) you did not understand the concept of the weapons which is in part because c) this is a 1v1 duel game that happens to have an ffa mode for warmup which you solely present to us. I won't tell you how it works, you are the reviewer so get back to the game and learn how it is played first. Then you will know that, yes, it is based on Quake but makes a crucial variation to the way a duel plays out. And yes, it is worth a buy, at least for people who can deal with the game being misjudged most of the time and therefore suffering from a very small playerbase. But you certainly can find players, add them to your steam friendlist and once enough people see the potential and fun in this game, they themselves get rid of that disatvantage for six ninetynine and a bit of patience.

games like this kinda make me hate video gaming. not because it's bad, but because I can't stand games that move this smoothly. People seem to keep wanting more and more frames per second and I find when you have too many frames per second it feels...too real, if you know what I mean? I get the same issue with high FP/S cameras used on Vlogs and Television.
@MrJoeyWheeler10 жыл бұрын
***** Well, at least someone seems to know what I mean :) I mean...it's so difficult to explain which is why all I can say is "it looks TOO smooth" it just seems wrong somehow and it bugs me. I noticed it in the latest of Matthew Santoro's videos as well as he moved his head.

***** The human eye can't see past 10 frames? Are you serious? Did you bother doing research before you spouted the dumbest thing ever. I really hope you were joking when you said the human eye can't see past 10 fps... Type this sentence directly into Google how many frames per second can the eye see And I get this result immediately. Although the human eye and brain can interpret up to 1000 frames per second, someone sitting in a chair and actively guessing at how high a framerate is can, on average, interpret up to about 150 frames per second. The point: 60 fps is not a 'waste'.Nov 22, 2012 And heres other links incase you are too lazy to do research on the subject: www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/1vy3qe/how_many_frames_per_second_can_the_eye_see/ www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1572225-Mythbusting-quot-Human-eye-cannot-see-beyond-60-FPS-quot
@mud07410 жыл бұрын
Damian Freeman On the off chance that you are not joking, have you seriously played any 60 FPS or above games for a long period of time? They look damn weird at first, but after about 20-30 minutes of play, you can't realize how the hell you went without it. 30 FPS looks pretty bad and 20 FPS seems practically unplayable after getting used to 60. Any fast paced shooter (or any game based on reflexes) has significantly better gameplay from the higher FPS while other games just look better. I really cannot understand people saying that lower FPS is better when it is literally just making everything slightly jumpy.
@MrJoeyWheeler10 жыл бұрын
mud I have, and I don't enjoy it. Again, it makes me feel ill. Slightly slower FPS are far more suitable. Not saying I want something to be choppy, just now "life-like" smooth or "too fast" smooth as seen in this game. It's disorienting.
