Mack: It's sad when a game such as Evolve feels like a total conversion mod rather then a fully developed and well balanced release. Why should I pay more then $60 just so I can have, in my mind, a complete game? The game is worth $20 in my mind. It is a shell, as you mentioned. The gaming community is growing tired of bread crumb, DLC driven, stripped down, under-developed releases by major companies.

I was sooo excited about Evolve. Then the jaded, cynical, realistic gamer in me remembered: This is the decade of crap. Early-access. Shamelessly overpriced DLC. Online-only. Eternal Beta phases. Kevin Spacey in an Exo-suit. Whether Evolve is fun or not, f*** them for making those ridiculously overpriced DLCs. No integrity - just greed. Developers have always held back content to put in expansion packs, and it was greedy and scummy when they did that, but at least you usually got a decent amount in an expansion pack. Bring back the days of boxes and expansion packs, I say! Thanks for taking this bullet for us, Mack.

Usman Aslam Okay, just a monster and a few characters, some skins here and there? You know theres honestly nothing wrong with developers making DLC for paying customers, what is the problem is that the DLC IS THERE ON DAY FUCKING ONE...when did these developers have time to make said DLC, hmm? Oh yeah, while they were making the actual game. If they made DLC a year or six months after release me and mac wouldn't be so fucking angry (well mac would still be pretty angry, the game has little to offer after the first few hours). You don't seem to get it, your attitude of "stop complaining for stupid DLCS..." is why companies think they can get away with cutting off pieces of game content and selling 'em as DLC, because today no one will stop them, the gaming industry been going down the shitter for some time, but the bigger problem is that all these "gamers" are all so happy with this process, they love and don't care that the developers are laughing in their faces when they buy game content remade as DLC.

I totally agree with you Mack. I'm just about to hit 40 and have been playing games since old enough to press a button. I have watched the gaming industry get worse and worse over the years. When direct to drive and steam etc. first came to light games were very cheap because, no retail cut or boxing blah blah was the marketing these companies used. Now they charge even more money then before with no box's or manual's the size of books. In this day and age I suppose we can all live without the clutter of box's but I miss having a big manual to read through at your leisure and the clear effort that had gone into AAA titles back then. Now they actually remove content or in some cases just encrypt it so they can charge for dlc. When dlc first came out the gaming companies thought we wouldn't go for it so they made sure the content of a dlc pack was very good but as the years have gone by, they now know they can get away with lax dlc packs and that's all they do. *Evolve* has to be one of the worst examples of this I have seen to date. I feel the mobile gaming market and it's way of making money has a lot to do with this as big companies are learning they can do the same shit but instead of charging 1.99 for a game and adding paywalls they hit you for a full price game and then add the dlc on top of that. Pre-purchase, Early access, Day one release expensive dlc or dlc seasonal passes before any dlc has actually been shown are all things that have become the bane of modern day gaming, oh and the releasing of a new version of the same game every year (Madden, NHL, Fifa, Football manager) and changing a few things to claim it is worth full price again. The problem is unless we all stand together as a united gaming world this shit will continue and will just get worse. I love your channel but your own subscribers have helped companies get away with shit games by gifting them to you so they can get a laugh out of you ripping them apart. That's all well and good and I too laugh but the truth is, it is another sale for a shitty game company (I'm talking about all the simulator shit). And in this video you state that you will boycott 2K games from now on which is admirable but will only work if you ask your followers not to gift you games from companies you are boycotting too. Both cases above will also mean you will not be able to do worth a buys or mackscorner videos for these games (unless the companies you are boycotting actually give you review copies which is unlikely if you are boycotting them) and so I'm not sure how boycotting any company could work. Otherwise we the consumer and your subscribers will miss out on your no holds bared, no bullshit opinions and I for one would hate that. I personally have found myself buying more indie games then ever and getting a lot more time and fun for my euro with those purchases then most AAA games. The vast majority of AAA games I would have bought if younger (no patience and believing the hype) that I did not buy I have seen did not live up to expectation, based on the few reviewers I trust and my own personal insight and I am so glad I didn't purchase them. The truth is this discussion could go on and on but I have already written more then most will probably read and even less will care about :D I will finish by saying that I rarely (never say never) purchase a AAA game anymore without doing a lot of research into it first and that means I can't have it on release day and I may miss out on pre-purchase content but I have seen it proven over the last few years of AAA games that it saves me a lot of money and disappointment in the end.

Arkeli5 Mate, my gaming history is very similar and I agree with you. It seems that when a creative industry gets a certain size, big business descends upon it and you end up with the lion's share of the market getting saturated with mass produced, recycled, over-hyped crap. It happened to music, it happened to movies and now it's the turn of gaming. At least the occasional gem comes along, and indies produce a lot of interesting stuff around the edges.

TakanaKyoshi These are not reviews. These are "Worth a Buy" opinions. He's giving us his opinion you don't need to accept it and he won't change it because you don't agree. There are times when I don't agree with what Mack has to say about certain games but I understand that is what he thinks, likes or dislikes based on his own mind. For what it's worth Mack gave a very measured critique of this game (considering some past WABs) and even stated it is a fun game to play for an hour or so before moving on to something more meaty. The bits you seem to be getting upset about are the bits where he is flying off the handle at the cynical way the producers of this game are treating their consumers. That is his style and personality dude. Take it all with a pinch of salt it is drama, it is exaggeration for comedic effect, if you take that out of the presentation you've just got some dry critique and opinion (although to be honest I feel exactly the same about this cashgrab, exploitation bullshit being exhibited by countless so-called gaming companies). What is this bias thing you are talking about? Everyone's opinion is biased if you don't understand that then I can't help you. This guy is giving you his gut feelings and real emotion you can not ever say that is wrong or "Bad bad bad" etc. etc. it's his truth and you can take it or leave it. I use to like turtle rock because they had a hand in Left 4 dead, a awesome game which gave me many years of fun, sequel game included. But now.... In any-case the problem with evolve is its design, its fundamental flaw. The developers made this game thinking that every multiplayer match is a boss fight, except a player controls the boss. This is actually great innovation and an awesome idea but the problem is that it can get old really quick (especially with only 3 monsters/bosses), turtle rock either didn't realize this problem and made the game with poor design choices they can't go back on, which in truth they did realize this problem and so they decided that they were gonna market it really well, polish up the gameplay so it looks cooler than it really is, and milk it for its worth. Instead of actually, trying to be innovative with this flaw and coming up with a good solution for it.

zerg0s They don't necessarily have to receive money for it. The problem with lots of reviewers and lets-players who've grown big is that there will be a certain incentive to stay on the good side of developers and publishers. Not because they pay money but for little favours and stuff like that. Like getting games a bit early to try out. Or to be able to score interviews with certain people. Get some exclusive footage, be invited to future events etc. That isn't given out to people who slam the newly released AAA title in the bin publicly and loudly in reviews or on youtube. Besides, yogscast earn their living from making videos about games. If a game is hyped, they know they will get more viewers if they make videos of that particular game. So they feed into that hype because it benefits their bottom line.

I actually feel bad for the developers who put effort into the games, the level designs, characters, game play mechanics, graphics, all of that neat stuff, then the publisher have to come in and order the developers to strip away parts for separate dlcs, preorder bonuses, pay to win stuff, making everyone infuriated and not buy the game giving low ratings for the shady business stuff that has gone on to the game. Pretty much a crime to me imo for wasting good time out of developers.

After I've heard what Evolve did I wanted to see it for myself, searching up the game I found your video and I have to say I already fell in love with your channel. Your commentary's great, you explain little bits about the game, give nice arguments and a little bit to think about on your own, plus your video's not the same 3 clips shown over and over. While listening to your commentary and seeing your video I'm happy to see that people are finally stepping up against what the gaming industry's slowly becoming. Don't agree with the first half of this review. I find the game quite fun for long periods of time as long as there's a good hunter team and a good monster. I'd liken it to CS:GO in how it's repetitive but continually fun. The developers have done exceptionally well in balancing such unique asymmetrical gameplay. But I wholeheartedly agree with your stance on 2K's greed completely ruining the experience, which is why I refuse to give these people any money (been playing a gifted copy). Being essentially a multiplayer-only game, it should have cost something like $40 and included all 5 monsters and 12 hunters. I'm fine with cosmetic skins as DLC on launch, but the amount and pricing is just excessive.

Comparing it to CS:GO is a very far fetched comparison. CS:GO has tons more content in it, not to mention is wasn't built from the ground up on DLC. In the case of CS:GO, they wanted their game to be more appealing, so they added DLC and weapon skins. Not to mention CS:GO is less than half the price of Evolve (W/o any DLC that is). In CS:GO you have literally endless amounts of strategy, should we fake them B and go A? Should we nade stack B and rush in? Hey lets wait it out and stay quiet until 1 minutes remains. Then Evolve, what options do you have? Chase, run, chase, run, trap him, chase, run, chase, run, trap him, game over. Even when CS:GO release a map pack, it's free to everyone, the only thing you can pay for is the weapon crates or the pass to do the missions. Nothing in CS:GO that actually effects gameplay cost money. CS:GO also has it's own issues that make it not worth buying either though. You pay for a game that makes itself up to be a great "competitive" game, but it isn't. What do you get for your money? Hackers galore, smurfs galore, bad servers, low tick rate, bad hit registration, and people who leave/troll with little to no repercussions. To get the experience you're promised you actually have to pay monthly for something like ESEA.

Thank you for your outstanding video and for the 60fps gameplay. The game definitely looks awesome and I will get it; when 2K and Turtle Rock eventually puts the entire game and all it's DLC, and monsters, and hunters and whatever else comes out from now until then, in a single game edition, for like, $29? 39? + Worth A Buy I am with you Mack, I've been a gamer since a very young age and have to agree with you 100%, slowly more and more games are offering a "shell" game at full price with vast amounts of DLC. When i was younger, there was no such thing as DLC.. content was added in patches that fixed/optimized the game for free, then any considerable add on was sold as an expansion for around half the price of a full game. Expansions this day and age are spun, twisted and sold as a new game, look at battlefield hardline.... that's just an expansion, not a full blown new game. But yet people love it.. maybe these guys don't know what good games are anymore. Then there is the lack immersion in game-play, its all fast paced ADHD cinematic gaming, even on genres that aren't meant to be fast paced such as adventure games. What happened to taking your time, taking it all in... enjoying the immersion and experiencing the atmosphere, its all gone... humanity has turned into a bunch of ADHD no patience societies that love to waste their money on utter garbage. I admire you for doing this and saying how it is, but part of me thinks whats the point, this world has vast amount of people... its just the way the world is, i mean its everywhere look at food, pack of biscuits,chocolate bars (snickers).... they have all got smaller and cost even more... yet government says there is no inflation... that's right because its all hidden inflation, they even have the cheek to say inflation is at an all time low! how can that be if you need to buy two packets to get what was 8 years ago... 1 packet. We are at the end of the road

The base monster skins are all grey so they blend in to the rocks, buying a bright orange, yellow or green skin just makes it harder to play the monster

DLC should be an after thought, an idea to expand the game maybe a few months after release. I am all for DLC if it's done properly but this is just DLC abuse to the extreme.

DLC for all bethseda games is done how it should be. They spend massive amounts of time working to give us a full and complete game and after it is released they begin planning DLC for the game which never comes out even close to when the game launches

jak kiloyer Agreed, Bethesda do DLCs right. I *still* haven't got round to the Skyrim DLCs, but some of the stuff in Fallout 3 and New Vegas - like Point Lookout and Old World Blues - are practically games in themselves. I think games that don't have an online element always do it better, because they're not trying to flog everything they can to people who want an edge in online multiplayer. I've got 300+ hours in both Fallouts, and they cost me £4 each in Steam sales, but with Evolve I could see myself getting bored very quickly, sadly.

I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate what you do with your channel. I know sometimes it must be a pain to buy a game that you believe will most likely suck, but you do it anyway so the rest of us don't have to. I only wish more people could see these videos. Wholeheartedly agree with you Mack, couldn't have put it better myself. This culture of shipping games with very little content and then selling DLC the content that should be in the main game has got to stop. It really is a worrying trend. I remember the days when an expansion pack was just that. They typically came out about 1 year after the original games launch and were like a quarter of the original game in terms of content and were generally worth picking up. Good on you mate for speaking up!

An alternative to this, although quite different in concept, is Nosgoth. It's a free to play game, hunters vs vampires, 5v5 I believe. Each side has multiple classes as well so it's not just a straight up arena shooter. You get the same sense of being hunted but encounters happen FAR more frequently than in Evolve (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, personally I think it's a good thing).
