Yes you are the first reviewer to bring up the HDR issue. I agree it looks like a pastel color. Treat this OA5 like the Action 3 which they fix in OA4. Wait for the OA6 when they fix all the issues.

Returned the Action 5 and got the Action 4 for $209 on Black Friday sale. It’s the better camera. DJI tried to cram a bunch of features in the 5 and in order to manage over heating they gave it a lower bitrate so the image looks worse. I shoot in flat D-Log so I can make the footage from either camera look good. The 4 has a higher bitrate and non of the fluff.

@@smaakjeks In my opinion, DJI kind of screwed themselves with the Action 5. They stuffed a lot of features into this camera like depth/altitude meter and they want it all to work reliably without overheating at the expense of image quality even after the firmware update. The DJI Action 5 has some fake processing going on that I can't stand this is where they get that DR you mentioned. I believe DJI tried to squeeze everything they could out of this sensor with bad software image rendition. It's like taking tone curves in Light Room and making everything look worse especially with the HDR that you cannot turn off. If I was stuck with the Action 5 I would shoot in D-Log only. I care about image quality and accurate colors over everything else.

I tried it myself and felt that the low light mode of the oa5 is very good, much better than the gopro I was using, maybe your expectations are too high, it's just a action camera

I've done alot of watching lately and went with the OA5. Originally bought the AP2 but cancelled quickly because of the fogging issues. Im gonna stay with the OA5. Chances are firmware will eventually solve many of the issues. I hope anyway. GoPro is just not great. My first foray into action cameras btw. I think i picked a winner here. The dji ecosystem is robust, and CS is leagues better than insta360. Thanks for this video. It does set some possible expectations, i assume they've most likely fixed the usb cover issue by now in later batches. You hit the nail on the head with hdr though. Id like a slider to be able to adjust it. Id also like a starlapse mode and a clarity zoom like insta360 has.

One of the things that I like about the Action 5 Pro is the ability to easily connect two Mic 2s. This makes it good all around action camera that can also be used for vlogging. Holding out faith that they get some better firmware fixes in place.

Same here! I'm new to action cams and with zero editing skills. I watched so many vids pushing DJI A5 Pro that my wife saw how much I was interested in it that she got it for me as a Christmas present. Still very happy and can't wait to still test it out once I get to open it up after Christmas. I know that for my needs it's going to be just fine. DJI will prob release another update and than everyone on YT will be hyping it up! Go with your first instinct and good luck with the action cam u pick.

I agree with everything you said in this video! I do motorcycle log in content on another channel and I’ve been using GoPro‘s since the day I started motor marketing. After seeing reviews, etc., I decided to purchase the action five pro which was my first time using a non-GoPro Action camera. Right out of the box I went for a ride testing the camera at 4K 60 frames per second. I noticed that the footage appeared over exposed and HDR. This was never an issue with the GoPro. So I must say I am disappointed with the action files video quality, and feel like I look like a cartoon. So confident that the camera would not be horrible. I purchased a bunch of accessories which now as they’re starting to be delivered, I am not opening them just to make it easier in case I decide to return them and go crying back to GoPro. Also, I wish an action camera Would incorporate a portrait video mode which blurs the background in case you want to truly use this action camera for flogging as well especially since companies like against the 316 are promoting the ace pro two for vlogging.

coming from a GoPro Hero 9 and this Action 5 my first DJI product, the "Pro" wasn't something i felt i got misled. what made me buy it though was the max ISO 25600, other action cams go up to 6400 only. this allowed me to go min 1/400 to eliminate jitters when running head mounted, and have 1 more stop of exposure in low light (early morning/evening, forest trails). i do not mind much the noise as long as its watchable on a big TV on full resolution. this is for KZbin anyway, not Netflix. I've to test supernight which goes to 51200 on a night run. so for my very specific needs, it kinda works. yeah the HDR look seems prominent sometimes, not sure if the high ISO max plays a part on that

I've heard a lot about this little camera. One thing I don't like and it bothers me a lot, is the oversharpening of the image. I wish they could do an update to the firmware which could adjust the sharpening in the camera. Second thing, I wish these little cameras could afford to record raw video. I think it is fully doable, I wish it would be possible for them to release a version with this capability because as far as I am aware of there is no camera that is made for "action" and has this capability. To me that would make it a REAL PRO, as opposed to a compressed footage.

I think it’s just a name change process, aligning their branding with competitors. For example, GoPro, Ace Pro, and now DJI X Pro. It’s not necessarily a professional-grade action camera, but more about updating their action camera labeling.

In low light you wanna make your own custom settings, I find 1/200-1/800 Shutter range and 100-12800 iso range at 60fps 4K works best.

@@littleidols There’s an icon on the screen constantly letting you know how much time you have left either due to battery or sd card space, these cams are known to be reliable, so no overheating yet for me. Quality is good bit rate wise when set to 60fps and up.

I agree with you about the image getting worse with each firmware update. I've never liked the Action 5 image in normal color profile because of the HDR effect but I was very happy with the D-Log M and then using the DJI Lut in post. After the firmware updates, specifically the second one the image got worse even using D-Log and the DJI Lut. I have gone back to using the A4 with the Mic 2 and the GPS remote and everything works perfectly, no color corrections required. The A5 may have a lot of cool features but so what. If the image is not good none of it matters. That's why GoPro remained so popular because even with it's flaws it always had a good image. I will give the A5 another chance after the next firmware but for now it just sits in the box.

The Action 5 definitely has slightly better battery life, but you can always just plug in a power bank into the Action 4 and run all day

even with its limitations, OA4 creates a better and pleasing scene in the daylight and even in darker situations, it fails in real darkness while OA5Pro takes brighter scenes in deep dark situations its outcome looks like a fake cartoonish AI generated imagery as you have correctly mentioned thanks for the clear cut review i got my personal observations validated by your opinions on this subject you are absolutely right that it is the new sensor that is making all the differences that is why the lack cannot be fixed by mere software firmware updates by DJI even if they keep trying

Good video. To me, I don't see how software patches can fix hardware limitations, but maybe I'm missing something. Question, can the DJI 5 record in vertical format natively or do you have to manually rotate the camera?

The issues you had in the low-light footage is concerning, and I hope they get it fixed in the next update. I don't do much low-light with action cameras, so I haven't seen it happen yet with my A5P. And as far the HDR issue, it hasn't bothered me as much as it has many others, and I shoot a mix of normal 10 bit color, and DLOG-M, probably using DLOG-M a bit more. And the DLOG-M image footage looks great, at least as good as the Action 4 or the Hero 12, mostly better. That being said I hope they do add the ability to turn off the HDR effect. Great testing and review. Thanks for sharing.

That a shame, been waiting for your (current) final thoughts on the Action 5 Pro. What was the frame rate on those Christmas light tests? I've seen other reviews of the most recent update and there's a noticeable difference between 24 and 60 frames - the higher frame rate seems to crush the colours and look far more jittery as per the older non-super-night mode cameras. Two months and 3 updates is a long time to not be able to sort things out. HDR on or off and bit rate choice should have been the priority after launch. The Ace Pro 2 has 2 chips, 1 for image capture and the other for the processing apparently... 🙏

Yeah I was not happy to do this review, but after 2 months and 3 firmware updates it was time. The Christmas lights were shot in 4K@30fps with Super night mode.

IMO the Action5 is an hit and miss. I'm loving it because of the seamless Mic2 integration (Action 4 had connection issues) and for me it was the main reason for upgrading. But there are shadows on IQ as you say. Super Night never worked for me, it originally was very low quality and now it's decent but DLogM is better. The only way i can use the 5 today is in DLogM, other color modes are unpredictable. There is sure better low light resistence but it's not the new sensor alone, there is also some denoising algorithm you cannot disable in any way, and sometimes you get artifacts when contrasts go very low. Also the color rendition is questionable, magetas on skin are difficult to handle in post. I gave lots of examples on the DJI forum and something were heard something not. Still hoping in a new firmware release that can fix those aspects. Don't want to believe that DJI keeps the software update for the 6.

I'm looking to get my first action camera and I've been looking at the osmo action 5 pro and obviously the osmo action 4, I'm not really sure which to get the main consern is that I'm not sure if paying 150$ more for the action 5 pro (skiing combo) is worth it I'm looking to use this camera when I'm on vacation,snowboarding and basically "everyday use" please let me know what you think I should do.

I just returned my Action 5 Pro. It was supposed to replace my Hero 11, but the picture quality wasn't there.. What was good on the Action 5 Pro? DJI Mic 2 would connect instantly with great audio. Slightly better in low light. What was bad about the Action 5 Pro? Less detail than Hero 11. Less dynamic range than Hero 11 (this surprised me). Weird looking, cartoonish video at times. Very jittery in slightly lower light due to stabilization. Overall not usable for my KZbin channel. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.

Struggling with this one. 4 for the sale price or 5 and hope they’ll fix low light ? I’ll pretty much be shooting in dlog the whole time so I think I’d be ok for day footage but does the bitrate issue still affect footage quality when shooting in flat profiles ? The DLog M on the Action 5 Pro is good at high bit rate and probably the best image you can get and using the DJI LUT to correct it back to Rec 709 is a must. Knowing DJI's history they "usually" improve a cameras performance although this time with this new sensor it's taking them a long time to sort out.

I'm looking for a new action cam, but I'm torn. I think the GoPro has the best image quality, and I thought the gods had finally delivered two great cameras with the Action 5 Pro and the Ace Pro 2. However, I'm disappointed that the Action 5 Pro, and even the Ace Pro, have an over-sharpening halo-it looks awful. Even the leaves on the trees look cartoonishly oversaturated. I do need good low-light performance for my type of filming, though. I'm still using my Hero 7, but it’s plagued with freeze-ups. I’ve been waiting for the perfect camera, and I feel like I'm still waiting. Maybe I’ll just pick up a Hero 10 or 11 for now.

I didn't take it as a dig, but for a camera to be able to vlog with you need good stabilization which larger cameras don't have and need a gimbal and that makes them large and bulky, action cameras have the best stabilization out there period, they're small and get great 4K image as well as audio, that was my only point

I am using this in my vietnam trip. Its worst stabilisation in low day light and evening. I brought this for stabilisation now i am using my iPhone 15 which shoot better videos than this so called pro. Do not buy this camera guys better go for ace pro 2.

Haha, I was really hoping this was going to be better than the Action 4 and hence why I waited 2 months before doing this review. I don't think DJI will ever send me anything and for me that's okay, the majority of their products are great like the Action 4 and the Pocket 3. Greyhound now boarding😆

truly.. i am not satisfy with action 5 pro footage.. i prefer spending on gopro 11, 12, or 13 because all of three models provide similar decent quality (except night mode & battery backup) for run & gun users in both mode auto and manual... trenches, bushes & tree leaves looks totally fake and artificial on action 5pro .. and grass field looks over smoothed in many videos...🥲🥲
