I totally agree with your review 😊 I had a long search for a well priced eyepiece when I started and put off buying any until I found the best for me ☺️ I then proceeded over a number of months to purchase the entire baader eyepiece line up, with the extension rings it has to be the most comprehensive range available and to date nothing else on the market has tempted me since 😊 keep up the great informative videos regards Peter

I have a Baader 8 to 24 Mk 4 zoom, and Hyperion 10mm. Both are excellent. I use my zoom, mostly with my 102mm Celestron grab and go telescope, and with my 10 inch Dob main I primarily use three eyepieces. A 22mm Teleview, the 10mm Baader and a 6mm for Planetary and close up work. Those two Baaders work perfectly, and though their roles are different, they give perfectly clear views. Thank you for your reviews on eyepieces, they really helped me when I was trying to figure out what optics I should use, that are worth the investment!

Excellent review Bogdan! I totally agree with you on the quality of this eyepiece. I own one and have compared it to the Orion 24mm Stratus and they are so close that I had to go back and forth a few times to determine which one was better, The Orion seemed to squeeze across the finish line just ahead of the Baader but not by much. I think The Baader is a amazing eyepiece that takes you into space ( if only the feeling you get when using it ) They are very clear and seem to be pretty flat in the view. The modular features are awesome! and I also would recommend buying this 24mm model! ( Especially because of the Orion Status 24mm has been unattainable now for years and if you can find one you're going to pay an astronomical fee on the collectors market because of its demand. So the smart thing to do is to get the Baader 24mm if you're looking in that focal length size. I don't think many will not be disappointed at all, Its great!

I have a full set of Hyperion eyepieces and the two Aspheric 31mm and 36mm on a vintage W.O. Megrez 72FD with very acceptable results for astronomy and with a 2" erecting prism effectively turning the optic into a spotting scope for day time use with excellent results. The 36mm with the M 72FD gives a 6° TFOV. The Baader Planetarium eyepieces are modular making them very flexible, they perform well and the price is very reasonable.

I was interested in purchasing a SkyWatcher 10 inch Dobsonian telescope as my first telescope and it comes with a 10mm and a 25mm set of Plossl eyepieces and I was thinking of having the following eyepiece setup: Baader Morpheus 17.5mm, 6.5mm eyepieces and the two eyepieces that came with the telescope. Would that be a good starter collection or should i swap out the two eyepieces that are included?
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian Жыл бұрын
@sniperthief1110 The 10" dob from Skywatcher is a great telescope. Try to get the flex tube if possible. It will allow for more flexibility in terms of focal length adjustments. Regarding the eyepieces, try to replace both standard Plössls that come with the telescope in time. If having a very wide fov for planets isn't that important to you, then get the Hyperion for the short focal length eyepiece instead of the Morpheus and also save some money in the process. Maybe the 8mm version. Later on you could combine it with a good 2x barlow to get down to 4mm. As for the longer focal length eyepiece you could get the 17.5mm Morpheus, but keep in mind that for the larger DSOs you will need an eyepiece with a focal length above 24mm. Here I would recommend the 24mm 68° from Explore Scientific or the 24mm Panoptic from Tele Vue. Or go straight for the 32mm SWAN from Omegon if you like. Hope this helps.

@sniperthief1110 Strating out with the Hyperion Zoom is a great idea. If you plan on getting the 14 an 6.5mm Morpheus, then why not get the 9mm as well to replace the 10mm stock eyepiece? They are good and even better with 2x barlow or the 2x powermate which I prefer over barlows. I have the 10 and 17 mm which gives me a 5 and 8 1/2 mm. That way I don't have to buy the 5 and 8 just have to buy 13 ,21, and 24 which would perform better in my 14 in dob.

@Lascelles Hi! If you are referring to the Stellarium screenshots, then these aren't real views obtained with the telescope. They are just simulated views using the software Stellarium. I only wanted to show what the field of view is like using that particular eyepiece. To get such detailed images you will need a tracking mount and a good camera. As for the telescope type, you can get some good images with a go-to reflector telescope , but I would recommend a refractor telescope for easier handling and better results.

@leonardolaiolo3644 Glad you liked it. Using the 2" part of the eyepiece instead of the 1.25" won't improve the image quality. This eyepiece can deliver its maximum optical performance using the narrower 1.25" opening. The 2" adapter is there just for compatibility reasons.

On all of the other hyperions, except for the 24mm, you can remove the 1.25" barrel that contains the negative lens group, and use the eyepiece as a longer focal length 2" widefield, but you lose the edge correction in fast scopes. The 24 might have a slightly better corrected design than the other hyperions when uses without their 1.25" barrel lenses, but it still cannot give edge sharpness in fast scopes, unless they drastically changed its design since the first several years after it came out when I was still selling them. Baader would have advertised it and given a mk2 designation if so. So when I hear someone describe a 24 hyperion or stratus as sharp to the edge, part of me screams very loudly inside and I head to the comments section

The brand Baader Planetarium equals to high quality eyepieces and great accessories! Secondly, the Hyperion consists of 8 lens elements (just as you mentioned), which also makes this eyepiece a really heavy one, which could be a disadvantage!
@tuunaes
@tuunaes Жыл бұрын
Hyperions are mid range eyepieces and designed for like f/7 and slower telescopes. Their size comes from retrofocal design needed by long eye relief at short focal lengths. For example Explore Scientific 82s and TeleVue Naglers are significantly smaller, have wider AFOV and perform better with less elements.

@tuunaes
@tuunaes Жыл бұрын
@@SuzanneWhitehead-ot9fi Of course there's no sharp on/off point for image quality, but Hyperions start losing sharpness in faster telescopes starting from edges. Also there's variation between individual focal lengths in how well their aberrations are corrected and some do better in faster telescope than others.

@Richard-bq3ni Glad you enjoy my videos. An 8" dob is a great choice for a first telescope. I started with an 8" dob as well. I ended up using it for almost 10 years. As for the eyepieces you could maybe get a good 7 or 9mm + a decent 2x focal extender from Explore Scientific and maybe a 1.25" 24mm for DSOs. This will offer you 4 different focal lengths. You could later check out a 30 or 35mm for low power observations as well.

The 13mm is probably the best in the line. My first experience was from before the hyperion came out. I had an 8'f4 newtonian, and another guy at an outreach had just bought the 13mm orion stratus, which is the same optics. I was surprised to see that an eyepiece at that price, could tame the edges enough in my f4 that I was happy with the views. Until then I was mostly using plossls and 5 element plossls, which are decently corrected at fast focal ratios except for maybe the last 5% of the field. I also had an old 13.8 meade SWA which wasn't so great in the outer 30% and an 18mm meade WA that had the same 67deg field , and while it gave a good view in my f11 and f12 scopes, at f4 it was a joke, comical, a total warp tunnel of crazy looking stars. Both improved greatly with a barlow, but were then effectively 7 and 9mm eyepieces. This is what the hyperion does, much like the nagler, it is a huge longer focal length top part, that is internally barlowed down, which is effectively giving the scope a higher focal ratio to correct the views. Note that the 24mm is a different design, and does NOT give sharp to the edge performance in fast scope, unless they radically changed the design and didn't tell us. The 24mm does not have the built in barlow elements, and unless they changed it to a panoptic style design, which I am pretty sure they haven't, there is no way the 24 is sharp to the edge. I know, I used to have one. All of the other hyperions especially the 13mm, are good even in f5 and faster scopes. Note, they are also chinese copies of the vixen LVW, the original 20mm eye relief, 65deg superwide lanthanum japanese eyepieces, which orion sold under their own name as well, before the switch to the cheaper stratus, which was then also sold as the hyperion with the addition of the modular threaded system

Unless they radically changed the design sincd when it came out, I am shocked to hear anyone describe it as sharp to the edge. Unlike the other hyperions, it does not have a negative group in the barrel, and is really nothing more than a moden updated erfle or widefield design. They would have to go with a highly concave field lens like the panoptic and es68 in order to have good edge correction in fast scopes. It wasnt that way when it came out and.for several years after. I would think if they made such a major change they would advertise it, maybe give it a mark 2 designation. I doubt this has happened, and maybe we have different definitions of sharp to the edge

@Andrew Pattie The Hyperion series is very capable and in my opinion better than the Svbony 68°. They are comparable to the ES 68° for example. As for the fixed vs zoom Hyperion, I would stick to the fixed eyepieces. They have better eye relief, wider AFOV and are bit brighter than the Zoom Mark IV. The zoom is good if for example you want maximum flexibility and for some reason a very simple setup with one telescope and one eyepiece and nothing else.

@@BogdanDamianthe way I see it, the zoom is an 8mm hyperion, with the ability to be several narrower field eyepieces down to 24. I have always thought it to be an overhyped and overpriced eyepiece since the mk1 first came out. And the entire hyperion line was so overhyped on the forums, that the exact same orion stratus sales suffered, and baader kept raising prices and the hype kept pushing the sales. People kept thinking they were getting pentax XW performance because some forum shills were saying they sold all their pentax XWs after getting hyperions, so baader kept creeping the price up and people kept buying. I was on the forums, as well as being at a major retailer seeing the hyperions fly off the shelves. They were good for the money before the prices went up, and still a fairly decent value, but not as good as when they were first introduced much closer to the $120 price point like the stratus. But the zoom prices are insane for what you get. I had a $60 celestron zoom, and the difference was not major, and it also had lenses to attach my camera and it worked killer on my 80ed as a long zoom for my camera. And it was a great outreach planetary eyepiece with bigger scopes, costing a fraction of what that overhyped overpriced behemoth did. Sometimes a company gets lucky and forum hype gives them a cash cow. Hyperions are the ultimate cash cow. Explore scientific did the same thing, double the price of the 1.25" 82s after cutting off meade and celestron from selling their own versions with the same optics, positioning as a semi premium option for market perception for all the new people coming into the hobby, and doubling profit margins at the same time, since the company is truly owned by the manufacturer, and they didn't become 2x as expensive to produce. Yes the es82 used to be $99 eyepieces

I have WO 20mm XWA, which has the same optics as the APM. It is hands down the best non 21 ethos, 100deg out there. It is remarkably close to the ethos in performance, and much sharper at the edge in fast newtonians than the ES100 20mm, while costing a lot less. The 14mm ES100 is exceptional though, splitting hairs close to the 13mm ethos. And the 25mm surprised me, though there is no way in hell I could ever afford one. The person that had it won it. I was expecting poor edges, but it was surprisingly good, better than the 20mm The apm is a definite win, since the ES option in that focal length is an underperformer for the price, and the APM is so close to the ethos for a fraction of the price.
