Columbus Neighborhoods: Unique Neighborhoods

On this episode of Columbus Neighborhoods, we’ll take a look at some of the truly unique Columbus neighborhoods, including Baby Farms and a small community struggling to find its identity. Plus, meet Bhim Bastola, a Nepalese-Bhutanese refugee who is a grocery-store owner and community activist.

I greatly am enjoying these series on Columbus. I have lived here my entire life and have been to many homes throughout the city. I really enjoying the history of the areas and most owners of these areas are amazed at the history when I mention it. They always ask me how I knew that and I usually respond with that I’ve watched the neighborhood series’s of the WOSU videos. Thanks for the series

March 2022. Speaking about the area around Baby Farms: I drive a motor scooter in the summer months and have explored this whole area. There are many lovely small homes, on all the surrounding streets. I have friends who's childhood home is on Marland Drive South. Around the corner, from Baby Farms. Their house, which they grew up in, they bought from their parents, when the older folks moved to a retirement community. There are some homes which could be considered Mid-Century Modern, and others which could now be, classified as "Atomic Ranch". They are single story homes, ranch styled, on large properties, with attached garages, and unique late 40s early, 1950s interiors. Central fireplaces with two sided access. Pretty, natural exposed brick, surrounds. Some have "Jetson" 1960s, styled modern kitchens with electric stoves in a central island. Some have intercoms, an early form of "in-home" communication device. Their consoles are mounted on a living room wall,....and they have receiving & sending speakers and microphones, in each room. Many have huge basements, that are both under the house and under the attached garages. The lots on Marland Drive South are wooded, with mature trees. In the 1990s, as older residents began moving out, younger families began scooping up these well built homes.

Back in the early 1990s, I and the person I was dating would pass through the villages of Canal Winchester and Pickerington , as well as their respective townships. Qe were on our way to visit the family down USR 33. We saw those villages 'boom' into cities. It's unfortunately that the 5k population rule doesn't apply to townships as there are many across the state that have populations well over the number. The cities wouldn't go for it as it would 'deprive' them of growing space perhaps landlocking them? Townships may not go for it either?

The pink house was on the market last year. If it wasn't for the choice of colors. I would of bought it.

@@JDSavage yeah, so maybe think before you speak. About something that you know absolutely nothing about. Not only the house but what it entails to paint. It would be no easy task to paint this house. The inside follows the same exterior colors.

@@frogmanpipes9561 what? Is there some city code? Also I was fully aware of this when I made my comment. It was more so having fun. Also, I'm sure you could change the color if you purchased the home.
