As an (uncredited, armchair) philosopher, I have to wonder why a god so removed from the post-agricultural human expeience would be so obsessed on retributive justice, as to revel in the schadenfreude of the suffering of wrongdoers? As a simulation coder, I don't ever feel a jot of wrath or resentment of my created instances of specimen, even as they behave unexpectedly or not as I want them to, usually due to bugs (that is logical errors in their programming, not literal roaches living in the punchcard reader). I see them _without_ omniscience as malfunctioning rather than malicious renegades. Broken like a toaster, not untamed like a horse. And an omniscient God would know to a Planck scale the circumstances that lead to my missteps, and if we assert divine intentionality (my sims did some randomization in its incident generation, so I was looking to discover emergent behaviors. Science!) then God _willfully_ set the clockwork in motion to behave as it did. From God's perspective, we are threads in a tapestry, predestined and unchanging. There is no justice to mete out. So, the notion of Hellfire presumes God is not a watchmaker precision-crafting perfect escapement to keep exact time, but a late-arriving technician who obtained the timepiece second-hand and is trying to make it cook bread into toast, while falsely asserting he created the machine all along, and toating bread was its original function. Since we know apologists and ministries are only guessing at the nature of reality, we can instead choose to look instead at what the natural world tells us, rather than listen to propagandists who want our money and social obedience.

I think it really comes down to this: if I created wicked autonomous creations that didn't follow my own moral code, that'd make me look like a bad creator. And it'd be super weird for me to decide to make them experience eternal conscious torment as my way of supposedly fixing that problem rather than, you know... not creating them, or shutting them down when my mistake became apparent. _So it must really suck to claim to be a perfect creator and then do all of that, huh?_
@FoxyRaccoon844 ай бұрын
The funny thing is that for your analogy to be even closer to the claim, you'd have created the automatons specifically to not follow your views. They would be created and programmed with the express intent that they would oppose you. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
@Zahaqiel4 ай бұрын
@@FoxyRaccoon84 Yeah, I haven't even factored in omniscience into my point. It would be _extra super creepy-weird_ for me to knowingly create autonomous beings that almost universally wouldn't follow my own moral code (including apparently most of the ones that actively wanted to but who I'd still reject because they didn't get it quite right on minor points of difference), and for me to know in advance that I would set them on fire forever for it and which specific ones I'd be setting on fire and what they would do that I'd be using as my excuse for setting them on fire. It'd be equally weird for me to make a big deal over the very tiny minority that I made specifically knowing they _would_ follow my moral code (even though I made them that way and fully knew how making them any other way would mean that they didn't do the things I claimed to want them to do), and for me to gaslight that minority into thinking that any of this entire scenario I intentionally set up myself was good and that they should enjoy it and feel privileged, and to convince them that actually over time they would continue to feel increasingly good about all of it. That'd all be _really insane behaviour_ and make me look like a psycho. So, that all super extra sucks for someone who claims to be perfect.

In the website TV Tropes, there's this magnificent trope called the "Complete Monster." The more I hear Christian apologists try to defend God, the more I think he should be the poster boy of that trope. Like, when you pull open the page, instead of a skeletal cyborg thing burning planets and people, it should be something like God as depicted in the Creation of Adam. He is the most twisted and irredeemable being I can concieve of, and Frank Turek beautifully illustrates why.

My question is, how did Mike Winger think that that would be a satisfying answer. He didn't seem as he was saying it to think it was that great, just looking at his body language. Heck, he didn't have to answer that question on his show, he could have just sent someone a private message. All he ended up doing was make Christianity, and god look even more monstrous.

Mike Winger originally struck me as just a few more clues shy of realizing his god does not exist (one of those people stuck in their profession, knowing it was false). Now I think he's studied the Bible so much that he probably hasn't had an original thought since. He doesn't think he is lying. He knows a great deal about a person who became a legend, without realizing it is actually a myth.

Why does god have to judge? Entire pantheons of goddesses and gods were just in charge of stuff, maybe needed to be bribed here and there. But get one on its own, evidently, and it's a tyrant? Nah, if I need one, it'll be a happier deity.

If you don’t love God enough to want to tell him what a swell guy he is, while some of your loved ones are tortured for thought crimes for eternity; I guess you just aren’t worthy of the opportunity to forever pat him on the back and give him “Attaboys.” God demonstrates his love by having us worship him- despite the terrible stuff he does. I bet God wears wifebeater t-shirts, and yells from the couch for more beer and pot pies, while watching tv and smoking cigarettes. It is the ultimate form of love.

It's shiny and appealing at first glance . When you hop in and drive round for a while you find it's rotten at the core. You've been sold a lemon with no return policy. All you can do is scrap it and count your losses. There are a full range of the religions of the god of Abraham to choose from at showrooms in your area.

I always ask them why they pray. Prayers more often than not, are offered up by people not experiencing joy in their lives. Imploring god to change something in their lives that he already knew was going to happen and is quite alright with it happening. Kind of pompous to think god would alter his plans for someone he'd already chosen to have that particular experience. The circularity of it all is...dizzying.

[01:40] "The god of evangenital Christianity..." sounded like a dick move. However, by the time you addressed Winger's limp theology I realised it was one of those hermeneutic justified presupposition thingies.
@HarryNicNicholas4 ай бұрын
to me the logic is that heaven is actually the torture, that satan left cos it was horrible having to suck on god's toes all day every day, and hell is actually the fun palace we atheists would prefer, i wouldn't even want to go to heaven, the people who want to be there are insufferable bores obsessed with worship, if i'm going to live forever i'd like to carry on much the same as i have for the last 70 years, doing art, doing new things, going to new places - meeting new people. heaven seems to be heroine, if it's that "good" there must be a catch.

The biblical god, the all perfect being initiated a plan where billions would be condemned to eternal torment. The reality of that knowledge makes worshiping him immoral. Most christians cannot accept that reality however, even though it is a necessary consequence of their beliefs.
