As an extension from that principle, a christian bishop had put forth the following argument: 1 The creation of the world is the most marvellous achievement imaginable. 2 The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator. 3 The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement. 4 The most formidable handicap for a creator would be nonexistence. 5 Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an existent creator we can conceive a greater being - namely, one who created everything while not existing. 6 An existing God therefore would not be a being greater than which a greater cannot be conceived because an even more formidable and incredible creator would be a God which did not exist. Ergo: 7 God does not exist.

Just reading about Kenneth Copeland, the richest preacher in the world with an estimated $300m. He lives in a 18,000 square foot mansion, 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms with a private airfield for his 3 private jets! Taking money from his poor church attendees to finance his lavish lifestyle. And to top it all off he claims the massive estate is church property so lives there tax free! Jesus said, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.", but who needs to listen to that guy?

i love this story : a sinner arrived at the gates of hell and the devil let him in...but what he saw amazed him, blue sky, endless sandy beach, palm trees and countless people in high spirits with drinks in hand and always pleasantly quiet Music..he started to walk along the whole beach....but what was that at the end of the beach,,,biting smoke, cruel wimmerl and moaning...he searched for the cause and finally found a deep hole full of nacks people, in a sea of fire and sulfur vapor... he was so shocked and ran back to the gate as quickly as possible where he met the devil... he asked him what that was at the end of the beach and the devil explained to him, that was bad ... but that's the Christians ... they want it that way and believe me this story is as true as the bible...I'll put my hand in hellfire for that

‘Poof or drown’ is one of the most revealing questions you can ask a believer. The way they answer that question can tell you a lot about the degree to which they have attached their identity to the ideology. It also helps to show why it can be so hard to have honest conversations with people who filter even their own emotions through this externally imposed filter of biblical righteousness.

It would take a really bad designer to design a universe that can easily be destroyed if anything changes the slightest bit within it. Any designer who put people on an Earth that has hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc. was a horrible designer. Any designer who made very few places where a human can survive is a poor designer if its goal was to create humans. Any designer who made our bodies able to get easily injured, subject to illnesses, and made us so our breathing tube is next to our eating tube was an incompetent designer.

The dodge I have found some Christians use for this line of thinking is first "You have to take it on context" then some rendition of "well it was alright at the time, God was working with what he had and was trying to lead people to a greater good", until finally they get to "Well that was not written by man not God" (this can included sections that explicitly said they were given by God). When pushed on what process and method they used to determine what is by man and not God they typically then say faith. Then you ask how do you determine who if either is correct if two people taking mutually exclusive positions and they say your using faith wrong....

I throw this stuff at believers all the time, that their God character had every possible option available and all it could come up with, for solutions to problems, was brutality. Not wisdom, not kindness, brutality. And I suspect the reason for this was twofold, 1) to send the message to the enemies of the israelites that their God/Jehovah/Yahweh/Whateveh was a brutal powerfu vicious being that would have their backs and 2) the writers lacked the imagination needed to write such a character properly. Naturally they respond with some form of 'mysterious ways'.

@@yourgodismean4526 I like using the exodus story for this. God forced pharaoh to basically do what he was going to do anyway, refuse the request for freedom. Not needed but he did it anyway. Then punishes the pharaoh's people (not pharaoh) for having done what he was forced to do, up to and including killing the first born sons of egypt. A proper show of wisdom, god level power, etc, would have been to force pharaoh to agree to the request, and then to order his army to escort the former slaves to their new home safely. That would have been a real show of force, getting their enemy to treat them well.

Is conceiving of the perfect Swedish furniture store the best _IKEA_ ever? I dunno. It occurred to me while watching this video, what if god's maximal greatness is restrained by physical law? In which case he would have to have used evolution to create humans. Presumably god cannot overcome logical impossibilities such as a square circle or a married bachelor no matter how 'maximally great'. What if similar physical limitations apply in the same way? If a god can create a universe but only within certain parameters, is he still 'maximally great'? It's like turning the fine-tuning argument on its head; if god is doing the best he can under severe constraints, the concept of 'maximal greatness' might mean no more than a god conceived of by ignorant Bronze Age peasants. That's the best that god could ever be. Bill? We need to talk...

"Maximal" properties are often used to get around the apparent incoherence of infinite properties, but as you've suggested, it erodes the idea of what God could be to the point of being a joke. "Maximal" just means nothing can be greater, but that doesn't say anything about what the peak is. The "greatest" number between 0 and 1 is still less than 1. Maybe "maximal" power isn't actually very powerful; maybe creating universes, realistically speaking, isn't that hard. Maybe "maximal" intelligence is still not sufficient to avoid screwing up quite often. Maybe "maximal" goodness still only lets you care so much. Better still, this is the God who is going to create the Eternal Paradise that Christians long for. The Garden of Eden was intended to last too. That didn't last long or end well. Luckily, the Flood washed that failure away and things soon fell apart again. Then He had His son tortured to death. Predictably, things didn't exactly improve that much after that fix either. Death, disease, stillbirth, famine, rape and War. But not to worry, He just needed a bit more practice. I'm sure all will be fine in Heaven. Good Luck. If not, you can strive for Heave 2.0. What else would give our brief lives purpose.

Or another thing you reminded me of, god is supposed to be the supreme being. Assuming for the sake of argument god existed, he invented light. Like he invented it himself. He invented the atom. His concept. The atom. And this is the same god who demands ritual blood sacrifice? A Christian must accept that animal sacrifice is a valid concept. They don't do it any longer obviously because they don't need to with the whole Jesus, human sacrifice thing. I mean, that's what it is. I know that term might sound bad when I say it like that but that's what it is. But anyway, that's how it worked before Jesus. Animal sacrifice. That to me does not seem like the kind of thing the god who invented spacetime would care about. The blood rituals of a tribe of primates. Why would he care about a monkey's concept of "sacrifice"? If that sort of entity wanted anything, maybe he'd want us to think a little more deeply about things. Maybe he'd want us to see him as something more than your Zeus kind of god. Like us, only more powerful. Really I don't think he'd care a lick what we think or do if he existed. But if he cared about anything, he probably wouldn't appreciate the bigotry carried out in his name with enough cover that a bigot can say "I'm not a bigot. It's all about god." and people will believe him. Or us building all this bizarre theology around him involving him having a primate son who died for our sins complete with cathedrals, priests, kneeling while praying in unison and other assorted rituals of veneration and submission. It just makes no sense. Those types of practices are people practices. It's clearly a human thing and not a god thing. Especially when you consider how similar they are to other practices by other humans who believe is some other, completely different god. It falls apart.

If we evolved out of animal sacrificing (because totally unnecessary see cloned synthetic meat: here you go god a petri dish full of cow/lamb whatever cloned animal cells, does anyone have a lighter? and a fan so I can waft this very tiny yet humble delicious bbq smell aroma skywards where the god...s...err I mean the only one true GOD lives just above the clouds? ) then perhaps we can also evolve out of this human/god sacrificing ritual thing as well (because that's just f-up can't even rationalize)? Yes. Death and dying is dramatic. However. It's going to get less dramatic when everyone in the world will be able to experience it over and over again in a vr setting artificially induced (and safely of course) as entertainment say in video games. Death as a passage to the supernatural. Well in the future it will become less impressive and manageable (referring to Transhumanism).

just to be serious for a second, how can anyone verify if anyone else is maximally anything? it can only be a claim, or an assertion, you couldn't recognise or verify omniscience even if you were omniscient. god is bollocks, completely. that's an assertion, but i can verify it, look, get god to tell me i'm wrong. still waiting.

You can't. Even if God truly exists and truly is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent, it's impossible for him to prove it. You might be PERSUADED of these things after sufficient demonstration, but they're not provable. To know someone is omniscient would require being omniscient yourself, and for the other two, it's always possible God's incapable of doing something he would need to be capable of to be maximally powerful/good. As an example, suppose there's a question that simply has no answer. It's unanswerable, and when you ask God the question, he tells you so. But how do you know he's right? Is it an unanswerable question, or does God just not know, or is God refusing to answer? Unless God can produce a comprehensible proof for your review that proves the question cannot be answered, you have no way of knowing. God does, because as an omniscient maximally intelligent being he just kind of knows facts, but YOU don't.
