Emoni Bates’s shot translates to the professional game. That appeared like it was going to be the case as early as the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League. The ensuing season that Bates spent mostly in the G League with the Cleveland Charge only confirmed it.
Bates shot 37.1% from distance on 10.5 attempts in 27 games with the Charge. His ability to get up a high volume of attempts is what was most impressive. Teams knew that he wanted to shoot threes, but that didn’t stop him from doing so. His quick release, limitless range, and ability to confidentially take contested jumpers allowed him to do so.
There were few things more impressive than when he got hot and all of those things were working in concert. This included a 38-point performance for the Charge in the beginning of January where he went 8-15 shooting from three.

Give Emoni some more playing time. They don't have anymore draft picks until 2030 and they're a small market team so finding talent is going to be hard. They need to look into developing what they already have.

I just don’t get it honestly. You have a guy who has tremendous upside and a skill that all NBA teams need which is shooting yet we break our necks to find any reason NOT to play him for a roster that needs exactly what he provides. We make these assumptions about players without ever watching these guys in any meaningful way. We just repeat what some national guy says sitting in front of a computer screen. I’ve watched every single game this kid has played in collegiately. I’ve watched all his G-League games. So I coming from a place of really trying to find diamonds in the rough that can turn this team in a Denver Nuggets type of team that scouts, develops, & identifies young talent that fit the scheme in Cleveland

Bates is a fun what if talent. I’m rooting for him for sure. But c’mon y’all. His nba opportunity comes based on his ability to understand the game. Niang is a 8-9 year vet and we are talking about them both like they have the same understanding of the game the same. Emoni Bates isn’t in the g-league only working on his skill set. He’s got a learn how to play the right way, when to take shots, when to pass, how to move on the court. Plus we’re trying to win, and my guess is JB had little desire to experiment and try new things if he didn’t have too.

Jay saying that Emoni can't become a star because he currently has holes in his game, while having an element of truth to it, seems shortsighted and naive to me. EVERY PLAYER coming out of college has some holes in their game somewhere. Even LeBron James had holes in his game coming into the league, he didn't shoot jump shots well. Just because a guy has issues in his game doesn't mean he can't become good.

Kenny Atkinson is a great player development coach, he showed this in Brooklyn a few years back. He helped unlock Allen's potential back then as well, he should be able to unlock Emoni's potential.

When bates is ready, he should play the two position. With such a slim frame at 6 Foot 9 he can put pressure on the opposition's two position trying to shoot 3'sand follow him into allen mobley and wade on a drive. Also, when the opposition does a pick and roll on Bates with their center, Bates can beter cover the big man on a switch.

Emoni has to get better,shooting 38% and 34% 3PT is not that great and being top 30 in the G league does not make you a starter in the NBA. I really hope he develops and becomes the player everyone hoped he be while he was in HS.

JB sucked horribly at playing his full roster. Altman came and yelled at JB for over playing the core 4. He had Spida playing close to 40 minutes with an OT included one game... Meanwhile while they were injured Bates STILL didn't even get a shot.. and we had like 10 people to work with at one point. Still never touched the floor. Glad JB is gone now. He barely drew up plays too their first year with Spida. Thankfully now this team is more well rounded and have chemistry together. Kenny is gonna give the young guys early looks and work them in with the roster, it's only more up from here. Especially since we got Burns now too.
