MD here. 100% would NOT do it again. As doctors we preach "a healthy lifestyle" to our patients, but our own lifestyle is anything but healthy. I signed up to practice medicine, and instead I've been trained to be a robot who simply does what they are told no questions asked. Miss your vlogs!

As a fourth-year medical student who has no regrets about choosing medicine but who still feels strongly about what needs to be changed, many of your points resonate. I think I've come to accept that I can adopt the idea you mention of "doctor as part of identity" while disidentifying with parts of the culture and profession of medicine which are counter to my values. It's always a balance, but it's been helpful to think about how just because I've committed to inevitably participating in unhealthy work culture to get through training does not mean that I need to believe that extreme sacrifice is a reasonable expectation to be "worthy" of being in medicine. It's not a moral failing to not feel grateful for the bad parts, if that makes sense.

As residents we only get 4-5 days off a month, it’s really not enough.

Hi Erin, if you feel comfortable sharing, could you tell us if you did medication/therapy for anxiety/ depression in medschool and residency and how common is this because I read it’s pretty common but no one talks about it. Thank you.

I really enjoy this content. A question that I have. I'm interested in returning to grad school for genetic counseling (so medical related career). I also have an interest in Research. There is a specific PI that I want to research with. How do you suggest reaching out to the doctor or PI? Should I start an email for it or would it be better to ask? Should I start a CV (but I don't have really any research experience).

Send a an email introducing yourself (mention any previous research experience) and giving some background as to why you’re interested in their research. It’s nice if you can include some details that show that you’ve been keeping up with their work, but it’s usually more important to be brief. PIs can get pretty busy and some of them are just low-key chaotic, so long emails can get lost in their inbox. Good luck!!
