They asked, "What were you doing in the car," meaning where were they going/doing. But asking what someone was doing in the car can also mean "how fast were you going." He knew they wanted to know what as in the where or the activity. But he responded with a speed instead.

If you're binge watching brit game shows as I am, Pauline shows up in Taskmaster. But remember that there are usually years gone by in between episodes etc. I checked out the apple thing w mortimer and it was all good when considering dates of original broadcasting.
