Would I recommend getting a Polytunnel for Growing Cacti ? In this video I share the Pros and Cons of having a Polytunnel from my own experience 😀🥰🌵

My "hothouse" like a clear tarp with those white strings embedded in it. It's like a very thin vinyl pIastic, not that tarp made from the meshed plastic strands. I built the frame double the size but wanted to see how I would go with the wind so only put it on half the length of the frame the first year. It has torn in the wind but I've used wood effectively clamped together and a bunch of extra large headed screws with washers to secure more points. It's like a lean to, 3.6 meter high at the highest point, 1.8 at the lowest point with a 5.5 meters of roof and 7.2 meters length that I can extend to 14.4 meters. Excluding the wing breaking side which is bell shaped and steel, I have a big pile of pots and the entry door on one side of that it is essentially the size of a full length lorry trailer. I get phenomenal warmth in there, basically easily 8-10C above outside temperatures depending on how fasy the sun comes up, and I suspect in summer it'll probably be 17C more but at that point the cacti will either be outside or I will lift the sides up for ventilation and maybe add shadecloth as I have some huge ones. This cost me about AU$3300 made myself with 27 foundations and like 92 or 98 bags of premix concrete and a lot of rocks. It is more a low end commercial outfit with a lot of framing. Can see it a few miles back I found out yesterday. Right on the edge of a hill in a paddock. I knew it was big but didn't think it was so blatantly obvious to everyone going down the road.

@@OffGridInvestor WOW your Hothouse sounds INCREDIBLE and at AU$3,300 thats very economical for a wonderful Hothouse and extra special you was able to make it yourself too, and at 3.6 metres high at the highest point that a wonderful height for the taller cacti, thanks so much for sharing all about your awesome Greenhouse Hothouse and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful evening XXXX

I agree on how hard it is to keep the bubble wrap in place on contoured sides. I have the same problem on the roof of my greenhouse and mine is way smaller than yours. The bubble wrap keeps falling despite all the tapes I put on it. Great video topic Lyn. Very helpful especially for those who are deciding on which type of greenhouse to buy.

I found this video very, very interesting, Lyn.. you always give such brilliant tips and advice.. I remember for a long time you and Hans looked forward to changing your green tunnel for a clear one.. Then you had the problem with birds and a kitty! 🤦🏻‍♀️ But you always battle on and your cacti are thriving and I do love how clear and bright it is! You've had some gorgeous blooms.. We live in different climates and I have a small greenhouse with fibreglass here in Italy but it gets WAY TOO HOT even with both doors open!! 🔥🥵 Well over 100F.. Useful in winter though.. Luckily most of my cacti are outdoors, but the heatwave here has been unrelenting and I use shade cloth all day long.. With the high humidity I am wary to water too much though! It definitely isn't easy knowing what's best for our beloved plants when the world weather is changing so much!! It's the first year ever my Opuntia indica haven't made a single flower!! They are usually blooming beautiful all summer long.. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't know what's happening to our precious planet, but we can only do our best to help things keep thriving.. Thank you for this interesting video, you and Hans are much appreciated.. 🙏🥰🤗💚🌵

I have polytuf clear tarp and horrendous winds with a big corporation trying to put up a wind farm about 5 miles away. I get a lot of tearing so it is an issue. I have a small one that is made of clear plastic roof sheets like for verandahs and that's OK but would be classed as a shed. I got out of that because it's also technically a transportable building. I'm forever worried about being dubbed with illegal building without a permit and already have a large shed I mever built with a permit so I'm trying to keep it on the "agricultural building" side, as I think there's little to no requirements on that and if so, I have family in the business of saving illegal buildings from demolition and bringing things not up to standards up to standard (building engineering consultants). But I would rather not get into trouble hence why I'm sticking with living with just having to do repairs. But believe me, wind can be a major problem. I worked at the biggest vegetable nursery in Australia and have seen when a 30 meter hothouse roof becomes like a kite in the wind. It's REALLY A SIGHT to see. Like being next to a downed super sized hot air balloon that has crashed. This huge HUGE thing floating in the air like your standing under a blimp. I suggest not skimping on framing and plenty of connection points to that framing if you go ahead. It us stressful worrying about how it will be damaged, but you come to work out after a few months what it can handle and it's been alright recently. If you have a prevailing wind, like a direct that the wind commonly blows from, use proper siding or sheetmetal roofing or solid plastic roofing for the side facing into the wind, preferably wedge shaped, or get a decent garden fence that has extra posts propped on a 45 degree angle to support the fence from tipping over if want to buy a hothouse/polytunnel/greenhouse that's a set design from a manufacturer. It will likely save the entire thing.

Thanks Lyn for a very honest review of the polytunnel - I remember you were very excited about getting it last year and I'm glad it's been an upgrade from the previous green one. It certainly displays the plants much better when you're filming. My main problem is I don't have space for one at all, at least not that wouldn't be shaded by the house most of the year. If/when we move I'd possibly still consider one, as we wouldn't really need to worry about insulation here but the curved sides and short lifespan would still be a problem. For now, it's just a dream for me to have one at all! Wishing you and Hans all the plant power from a hot and very humid Northern Spain! 🙂🌵💚

So happy you loved the Polytunnel review Donald, this polytunnel has been brilliant for the light and its so much nicer to film in there without the green flare I used to get on the videos, and I now longer have to worry about looking like Mrs Hulk with a green face when I appear in the polytunnel vids haha, but the curved sides is a challenge with not being able to put the taller cacti close to the corners and the cover is not strong enough to last for too long, thanks so much Donald for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Northern Spain for a fantastic new week ahead XXXX

Try putting some colourful whirlybird fans or streamers on the outside for bird deterrent. I have a poly tunnel with flat sides a meter high, but the poly is twice as long as yours (maybe more options when they get bigger). Mine is permanently covered in shade cloth for the summer and then I pull the plastic over in winter. I have flat tables with plastic pallets on top which are wider than the tables. I wonder if shelving would be better? I’ll have to do the maths 😂

Excellent points Lyn!!! Yes, advantages & disadvantages to each set up. Here, I couldn't use a polytunnel for several reasons. Winter temperatures for sure! When it gets to subzero F° it's hard enough to keep my greenhouse with insulation in the walls and the wood stove going all out!! A real challenge!! The plastic sheeting just wouldn't keep it warm enough. Also the storms we experience here can be violent!! Straight line winds, tornados, micro bursts. And this can happen during winter also. So a polytunnel wouldn't survive our Ozarks weather for too long. On the other hand, building a green house is expensive and can't be moved. My greenhouse was built in steps over the years. Saving some money by using second hand lumber & plywood sheets. 4 of the windows were second hand also. The initial cost was around 7000.00 . Then later we had metal siding put on . 3000.00. And now recently, the new polycarbonate roof panels at 38.00 a piece for about 13 of them. But even though they are thin, they are supposed to be 200 times stronger than glass. Hmmm. Do I believe? Not sure, but the last ones lasted 24 years before this hail storm punched holes in them. The greenhouse is a never-ending project. I have also over the years used second hand lumber to make extra support pillers for extra strength. And as of now I am putting in wood to cover the ends and front of the inside where I only had plastic sheeting covering the inside . All this lumber is coming from used freight pallets. Saving more money. The other cost was also the concrete floor in the beginning. So cost wise, a greenhouse Is much more expensive!! If you had to replace your plastic sheeting, It would be much cheaper than windows or polycarbonate panels. You guys are very lucky in the respect that your weather is as mild as it is. So dollar for dollar, pound for pound the polytunnel is a great idea for folks like yourself to have. Especially if repairs or replacement is necessary. I liked this video!! It really shows the options people have depending where you live!! Thanks Lyn!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to across the emerald isle, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌻🌷🌴💐🌱🍀🌹🌿🌸🌳🪴🌾😃👍

So happy you loved the Pros and cons of having a polytunnel Clyde, the Storms are such a challenge with these plastic covers, and I don't think the cover on this one is going to last another year, we absolutely LOVE your greenhouse and you are amazing to have built it yourself with second hand lumber and plywood sheets and second hand windows, and at 10,000 dollars for all thats a BARGAIN price for a big amazing greenhouse that you have, we are lucky in Ireland with our mild weather, we rarely get very cold winters and mostly just a lot of rain all year haha, the Irish joke that the only difference between winter and Summer in Ireland is that the rain is warmer hahaha, thanks so much Clyde for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Deb and all the pets and plants all lots of love and happiness and PEACE, LOVE, PLANTS and PLANT POWER to Morris Park for a super Sunday today XXXX
