For the last three years, I have owned a wonderful 1923-vintage Sears Craftsman house in Battle Mountain, Nevada. The kit was was shipped out by rail, pieced together, and is now one of the oldest houses in town. As with all near-100 year old homes, it has needed some TLC, but even after a century, it structurally sound, wonderfully proportioned, and cute as a button. Best of all, the two by fours are actually 2"x4"! I'm being transferred for my job so I'm going to have to sell (sob), but if I can find another Sears Craftsman of a similar vintage out East, I'd not hesitate to invest. What a terrific historical artifact.

With the poor quality items you usually get, I'll pass. I'll take something that is built to last like these homes.
@Sparky-ww5re4 жыл бұрын
I think I'll pass on that. Unless i know for a fact (never gonna know in this day and age ) that every single part down to the nitty gritty it MADE IN THE U.S.A. how many want to bet they will build the parts fron China??? My girlfriend's mother and father used to live in a Craftsman Bungalow, built in 1927. They are using it as a rental property, and the people currently living there say it is a very solidly built home unlike anything you will find today in new construction. Apart from updating the knob and tube wiring and glass screw fuse panel to safer up to code stuff, everything is pretty much original, way better than anything you could buy at Lowe's or Home Depot. Sears was once upon a time, as American as American Apple Pie .

There is an old coal mining town in southwestern PA by the of Mather, PA. that has a lot of sears homes. These were built by the coal company around 1920 and rented to the miners. Later in the 40’s they were sold to the miners.

Whether its a sears kit or not any rural home built pre ww2 most likely was built with sears catalog supplies

I live in a farm style sears kit home that my Grandfather and my Uncles put together. in 1921. It's not as impressive as the homes in this video but I remember my Grandmother keeping it spotless. The one thing that I love are the maple floors and Grandma always kept them sparkling.

I used to own a Sears kit house in Poughkeepsie, New York. About 6 of the houses on the street were Sears kits, all basically the same but changed a bit since they were built in 1930. There are quite a few of them in that part of New York if you know what you are looking at. A boxy 2 story building, Large front porch, 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, one car garage, hot air heat on a 25' x 125' lot. Not a bad house but too small if you have more than one kid. I used to work in the Sears in Poughkeepsie as well. In the garage. The stealing privileges were awesome! Everyone who worked in the garage had the best tires, shocks, batteries and what not on thier cars. Not just stealing, but the employee prices were really low and you could make deals on stuff. A friend went in one day and the sporting goods department had a 14 foot aluminum boat that they wanted gone as a display. He bought it for $100.00! Really, it was not a bad place to work. And the women that worked there! They had to have 36Cs or better to get a job, at least it seemed that way. The girl that worked at the candy counter had some set on her!
