I can imagine it takes years and years of work to make those cultivars. Personally, variegated plants don’t have the “lush healthy nature” look I go for, so I wouldnt. Maybe if I were rich, maybe the taste would change lol It’s always a joy to see people who are passionate about something tho.

@TropicalGardeningCyprus2 жыл бұрын
As an artist I can see the value of creating the various variegated plants. Even though the prices for me are out of this world, if there are people paying that, it's only natural for the people who create them to ask that much. It's the same for me, for example, if I can sell a painting for 10.000, why sell it for 1000?

I do like plants but have only basic knowledge, I do own close to 40 mostly common ones, the other day I showed a photo of a my Tradescantia Nanouk and a Philodendron Joepii (given to me), so asked my friends (4-5 of them) who aren't really into plants, asked them which plants would they get from this two, all of them said the Nanouk, and thought the Joepii looked plain/boring and all of them thought the Nanouk was some expensive a$$ plant.
@leafing.around2 жыл бұрын
Haha...yes the Joepii also don't really appeal much to me. Strange how we attach value to things ! I love round and polka dots or frilly leaves more! I think I have in mind begonias now...😆
@petermurdoch75402 жыл бұрын
Miss you have incorrectly named the Philodendron spiritus sancti. It means the Holy Spirit in Latin. ( I’ve had to sit through so many Catholic masses in Latin and the Holy Spirit seems to come up a lot, lol. ) the ii suffix in Latin is in honour of a family eg. veitchii means it was named in honour of the Veitch family etc. oh and species should always be in lower case , higher for hybrids and cultivars. It lets you know straight away if it’s a hybrid or a species. This ‘Karen’ from the Sunshine Coast orchid society deducted 10 points for a plant I had in show just because I wrote the species starting with a higher case. I guess I do love the attention to detail though.
@leafing.around2 жыл бұрын
😮😮 gosh and I had bee pronouncing it wrong all this time too? I had said "sancti-i" all this time.😱. Thanks for pointing it out. And also on the proper upper/lowercase...I had a chat with a botanist a while ago, and then I realized also italics etc comes into play too. Ok so the thing is...I am not sure sometimes what is a species and what's a hybrid😅. Would your Karen be my editor?😃🍀

Absurd prices, taking advantage on plant collectors. Especially that P. joepii variegata, as we all know joepii is not sensitive they grow wild, so we know this variegated joepii will low its price in the near future unlike billietiae var, which is hard to propa that's why it holds his value.

I mean I wouldn't call the prices stupid. It's normal for new rare plants which means they are the rarest of the rarest. There are those who are willing to get first dips on new rare plants. That "so expensive we could cry" quote is so true 😂
@leafing.around2 жыл бұрын
Yes they can command the prices especially when supply is reaaaalllly scarce and also especially when the plant is hard to propagate. Like that Variegated Anthurium Luxurian which is in the last video.
@alvaferjoe21172 жыл бұрын
That’s the best way to justify it. Still stupid in my opinion.
@lledrexcarilloyacubi12712 жыл бұрын
@@alvaferjoe2117indeed. Especially with the added attention by the internet/social media it’s gonna be hyped up big time and always gonna be justified. Regardless of whatever their explanation it still cannot be justified. It’s ridiculous. I remember there’s this nursery in the Philippines where it’s famously known for the most expensive sansevieria in the world as it’s their own cultivar and selling limited number for price that’s equivalent of a human life gezzz. Displayed them in a secure space but that doesn’t stopped thieves from stealing one of the specimens. 🙈 Don’t get me wrong most of the plants shown in this video are stunningly beautiful and I bet you that in few years time prices of some of these are gonna go down just like what happened to what they used to called the “Unicorn plants” these past 3 years . Example the P. Spiritus Sancti which used to in 5 to 6 digits US$, now you can get a nice specimen for $350. Dominic from the US who successfully pollinated PSS and even sold a few Variegated ones.

I suspect with variegated plants the success rate of the plant actually turning up variegated or has great variegation is very slim. So supply may still be low despite ability to grow quickly. At the end it boils down to supply and demand ...
