Hi. Great content, but I hope you did the math and you didn't buy a car that will take you 10 years to pay off by the time you save enough gas. Gas here in Buffalo area is 4.12/Gallon. Did the math and if I went to get an EV , it would take me 8 years to break even. Makes no sense to spend 40K for an EV to save on gas. I guess it's different in NL, but here it makes no sense.

Congrats!!! I’m taking delivery of my Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD here in the US this week!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I’ll receive a federal tax credit of $7500 and a Colorado State tax credit of $2500. That’s a whopping $10,000 back in my pocket. 😁 I’m super excited to never have to go to a gas station again. I can comfortably charge at home and when on road trips, I have 3 years of free DC fast charging on the Electrify America Charging Network, which comes with the car. I’m super excited, so I totally can relate to the feeling(s) you’re experiencing right now. Going electric starts with the individual. I hope that more and more people make the switch. So I appreciate you talking about this topic. Unless one is interested in the topic and does research about all the EVs that are currently available here in the US, the average person won’t know… that’s also including the rapidly expanding charging network outside of the Tesla super charging network here in the US. Btw, I’m a German currently living in Colorado. (My hubby was US soldier, now retired after 20+ years) we’re working on returning to Germany eventually. 💗 Tschüss! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

I have heard the maintenance reasons too. But I also heard some doubts on the life span of the quite expensive accu pack beyond 8-10 years (which of course also affects 2nd hand value), but that might be dated. Personally, I didn't do the full math because the main problem is doubtful solar yields due to a weeds problem (as in a double row of 30 meter high south facing monumental oak trees 10-15m in front of my house ).

In the UK, the government gives a grant of £2500 for EVs below £30000. In addition, EVs are exempt from road tax and from the London congestion charge. Also there is a salary sacrifice scheme for EVs leased through an employer - the lease fee together with insurance, routine maintenance, and an EV charger installed at home are covered in the lease all of which is paid for through gross salary - saving income tax, and both employer's and employee's national insurance resulting in around a 40% saving on the total cost of running an electric car.

I'm glad you're ok with your new car. In my country (Italy) we also have a charging stations here and there, but they're mainly done by majors to show people "Hey, look! We're doing something for the environment!" but if only 10% of the people will switch to an EV those charging stations will not be nearly enough (and to be honest even now people with electric cars use those charging station as a daily parking, specially in the big cities where find parking is really hard...). The 2nd reason I will not buy an electric car is that they're insanely expensive. Ok fuel prices sometimes get crazy (also here in Italy gas reached 2,2 €/l, but now dropped to 1,6 €/l because most of the price is made by taxes, and finally the government cut a little bit of those taxes) but to buy an electric car you must spend a ton of money, the Leaf for example here costs more than 30k €, and honestly most of the people spend half of that price for their car; most of the people need decades to recover those 15k € of difference between a good new gas car and an electric car. The 3rd reason I will not buy an electric car is that electricity is really really expensive in my country, and to get a charging station at home I had to spent at least 3k € and upgrade my electricity contract rising fixed costs each month. The 4th reason is the range. Maybe in the Netherlands this is not a big issue, because the country is not too big (I think the longest distance between two cities is something like 250 Km) but in my country this is not the case. For example from Milan to Rome (which is a very common trip for work or holydays also) there are 600 Km, and you're only in the middle of the "boot", if you want to go in Sicily or Puglia in the summer it's more than 1000 Km. Using a gas car it's not a big issue, also small cars can easily run for 600 Km with a tank of fuel, and refuelling is a matter of a minute; with an electric car it will be a pain, you have to split the trip between several days, spend a lot of time organize for hotels with charging stations and all of this makes you trip cost rise. Also going for a single day of skying on the Alps (which is quite a common thing in the north of Italy) will be painful because you still have to drive for at least 200-300 Km, with really low temperatures (which reduce you battery charge by itself), and hope your battery will last enought to get home by the evening. I respect your decision and I really hope it will be the right choice for you and your family, but in my hopinion electric cars will be a real option when: - cost will be around the same as a gas car of the same type (for example a small utility car cost will be 11-15 €) - fuel range will be around the same (~600 Km with a full charged battery) - recharge will be a matter of a couple of minutes, not hours like now (for example standard batteries across all cars and change batteries instead of charging them). Maybe we will get to that point in the future, I hope so, but for now electric cars are not an option imho, they sound more like the new toy for the richest part of the world, while the rest of the world can't afford it or don't care at all. For the environment it would be much better if the rest of the world will try to align with european cars standard regarding fuel consumpion and pullution; this objective will be really hard for some countries (specially in the poorest part of the world), but can be easy to reach for other countries like USA, but they lack the will to do it.

Wait, 600 km for work? 1200 km a day? 10 hours of driving each day for 8 hours of work? So that leaves you 6 hours a day to sleep and live? I don't envy you your work/life balance if you have to make that Milan-Rome trip every day.

Looked into acquiring an EV here in Ireland as the price of new and used ICE cars has skyrocketed of late, plus the cost of fuel has gone up alarmingly. We also have a Govt. grant (about €3,500) an help with the €35,000 - €50,000 price tag for a small family sized car. I then looked into leasing one, that works out about the same as leasing an ICE car as the leasing company claim the grant. There is also a grant to install an home charging system using low cost electricity at night, essential here as still a lack of public charging points but getting better. One also gains in the road tax, or lack of at present plus the no chatge for entering a ULEZ in cities, not yet here but coming.

Honestly the Dutch government should to a lot, a lot more in terms of Climate protection. While promoting electric cars to mostly more rich people has worked in the last few years, I would argue the impact is still minimal. Firstly, electricity isn't too green yet either. A big part is made with coals, and other big chunk with gas, that also comes from Russia. Furthermore, the Dutch government has mostly ignored investment in public transport. The railways mostly are full, almost no more trains can be added to the system. If more trains would ride around, less cars would be necessary and that would probably have a much bigger impact on the decrease of the use of fossil fuels. In the end promoting electric cars seems mostly a good VVD solution, but doesn't do enough to actually stop the disaster the world is facing....

Game changer is Lexus: they use a type of air-cooling system which is much safer than liquid cooling and maintains perfect battery temperature preventing battery from losing energy (those precious miles), or at least there is not any significant loss. With fossil fuels the cost will probably always be lower. Especially for middle to low income groups. Unless we get nuclear fusion to work. The inflation appears to be caused by the central banks doing QE and using artificially low interest rates. The inflation rate is far lower in non Euro EU countries. You cannot just print trillions and expect this to not cause prices to skyrocket. You create all this demand but nothing more is being produced so obviously prices will rise. Now they are using the pandemic and Putin as an excuse. But it is caused by central bank policy buying up all this government and corporate debt.

Hey Jovie, just some facts here: Most Nissan's sold here in Europe are Renault's caring a Nissan Badge. In fact Most Nissan's here in Europe are build in France at the Renault Factory. So barely anything Japanese about the most Nissan's here. That basically goes for the cars you are referring to: the Nissan Qashqai (which is based on a Renault Kadjar) and also goes for the Nissan Leaf (which is based on a Renault Megane E-Tech). Depending on the model BMW you used to have: The Mini's, the BMW model 1 series, the BMW model 2 series, and even the BMW model 3 series mostly are equipped with a French Peugeot motor in there. So The real German car, or even the real Japanese car experience, you probably have not been exposed to, for the reasons above here. By the way, that also goes for Mercedes-Benz: The A-Class cars, The B-class cars and even in C-Class cars you will find French Renault motors. So again, nothing really German about these motors! One more thing about getting people to invest in something else than a fossil fuel driven car: Yes at the moment, due to availability of the tech of producing E-cars, the hype about E-cars is a fact. Maybe you did not know that next to E-cars, there are 2 different Hydrogen solutions available and in Research an Development by several car manufactures: Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Renault and even Audi and Porsche. I may have forgotten some other makes... Anyway, Hydrogen can be used in a Hybrid solution: it is basically a electric car, getting powered by a Hydrogen fuel cell, and the other Hydrogen solution probably going to be a huge success for many, many reasons: This basically is a car with and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), like all other cars you've owned except for the E-car you got now, and these ICE-cars take Hydrogen (H2) in at a gas station (yes; a plain old gas-station) and you fill up your tank with H2 just as you were used to with your other cars, and a few minutes later you drive away in your ICE-H2 car using Hydrogen as a fuel, leaving just H2O (water) behind at the end of the exhaust. The story really is slightly more complicated in reality as usual, but my point is: next to E-cars, there a two H2- solutions (coming) available, especially the ICE-H2 solution, which are a serious alternative for people to switch from fossil fuel cars to cars that are much better to the environment ! Although we've purchased 2 E-cars our selves (KIA EV6), my bet is on the ICE-H2 cars for the future in general and E-cars for in and around the towns.
@JulesStoop
@JulesStoop 2 жыл бұрын
You can charge an EV overnight at home which is sufficient for about 95% of the trips of 95% of drivers. Which is much more convenient than having to go to any gas station (be it for gasoline or H2). There's of course still a market for vehicles with (technically much more complex and maintenance sensitive) internal combustion engines: vehicles that regularly (and often professionally) need to drive hundreds of kilometers/day, but people who need cars for a normal commute and the occasional longer drive, will probably prefer electric on batteries. And: electric motors can run on H2 (using a fuel cell), ICE's can't be made to run on electricity from a battery pack.
@dutchyjhome
@dutchyjhome 2 жыл бұрын
@@JulesStoop Yes in an ideal world you would be right, but as we all know; this world is not ideal. See many E-car owners and enthusiasts really do not like to take the responsibility for the enormous gigantic Carbon Foot-print when their beloved E-car was produced...and the enormous pollution of an E-car at use, since the vast majority of E-power comes from Cole power plants and Nuclear power plants. And the enormous pollution at the end of the cycle of an E-car at demolition. So yes the E-car it selves is not the environmental saving solution and does pollute the environment heavily. And and E-car can not be used in the same way we use fossil-ICE-cars. Look Fossil fuel needs to be replaced; this is a clear as can be. However we should not trade one heavily polluting device for another heavily polluting device. Face the facts as they are. When there will be enough windmills and solar power plants to create enough E-power, we can actually start making enough Hydrogen to start feeding all existing gas stations so we all can start driving our H2-ICE-cars, which are to be used as a full replacement for the old Fossil ICE-cars. In fact We could rebuild existing Fossil ICE-cars into H2 ICE-cars. Imagine this: all existing cars rebuild from Fossil into H2 ICE cars, now that would be the ultimate environmental saving solution, since you do not need to build all new cars!

The upside of electric cars is obviously the envirenment. The downside (at least for me, with my gas car) is that each charging spot can’t be used for parking, only for charging. So if you’re done charging, you can’t leave the car there, because you’ll get a parking ticket. Basically, with every charging spot in a street, there’s one less spot to park. Especially in The Hague, where we live, parking is impossible as it is. Not sure how they are going to fix that.

Tesla claims their batteries should even last over a million km's. The only things you will likely have to replace on an EV within its lifespan are the brakes and the tires. There's little to no maintenance. And even then, lithium batteries are fully recyclable. And they are recycled because the materials they're made from are very valuable. Same for All Offices and factories. 3) All private homes need solar panels by 2035. 75% of All public parking spots should have direct acces to charges by 2030 100% at 2035 That would realy help this country forward

A charge station should be in building laws for every new house with a private parking spot; no charge spot, no build permit! Every supermarket, every store build every building with a flat roof should ONLY get a build permit if every sq meter of its roof is covered in solar panels. Soundproofing walls along highways should be constructed with,... you guessed it solar panels and a storage system for energy so that saved energy during the day can and will be used to feed all the energy needs for this local road section (signs, lights, signalling, camera's everything) Farmers that want to stop or change their business should be incentiviced to start with energy production (solar) and energy storage. We should build smarter city-blocks with local production, storage and distribution of DC energy (from solar to day-storage-battery to car-battery), houses should ALL have optimal constructed roofs so that every house has a max production of solar energy. DC energy usage should become more common. We now use a DC rectifier for almost everything (to step down ~230V to 5V DC or 12V DC etc) these conversion-losses could all be prevented. Most equipment we use will run fine on low voltage DC (phones, computers, lights, routers, etc) Even e DC motor in a fridge or freezer will do 35W of power consuption fine in DC. I could go on and on....

Here in the US, while electric cars are being touted somewhat as the wave of the future, you see almost no recharge stations (the only one I know of near me is at a tiny public library branch in a very wealthy part of town) and the electric cars you mostly see are Teslas, so affordable only by the pretty well off and mostly seen in wealthier parts of the country (also a bit big, garish, and swoopy for my tastes, but that may be just me). There's also the danger that violent right-wingers here may be sent into a rage by spotting an electric car on the road and be aggressive toward you, as I've seen happen to hybrid car drivers like of the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. It sounds like there isn't any of that in the Netherlands.

Also in the Netherlands electric vehicles are more abundant in the wealthier neighborhoods. Lower income families, if they can afford a car, will buy a used car. There are not many secondhand EVs yet. With EVs making up a large portion of new vehicles, the secondhand market is sure to pick up in years to come. Also, with cities enforcing regulations for zero emission vehicles from 2030, I expect it will become cheaper and more common to change gas cars into electric cars.

Yeah, the Dutch goverment is great... if you've got money and live in the right area's. No, I don't drive an electric car. Why? Too expensive. I can't afford a new car. Not even with that subsidie. My current car is from 2013. Bought it really cheap from the previous owner in 2016 and it was the youngest car I ever bought. I understand they want people to buy electric but in a few years, when I might be able to afford a used electric car, those subsidies are mostly gone. Just as the benefit of not having to pay road taxes. Which is a very unfair system in itself. Road taxes were always based in the weight of cars. Electric cars are heavier because of the batteries, so they cause more wear and tear on the infrastructure. But the maintenance in those roads is being paid by the people who can't afford a new electric car and are stuck with older gas powered cars. It all sounds really nice until you realise how unfair the system is and that it mostly benefits the happy few and makes the less fortunate pay for that.

So they, in short those who can already afford it, are being subsidized, partly of course. But: people who have little, just enough for a second-hand old petrol, liquefied gas or diesel-guzzling car, have to drive it for years to come. They are not subsidized., because they cannot buy a new or even second hand electric car...!, they cannot drive ecologically new, modern and beautiful cars... Often they would like to, if they could. And there are many, Jovie: most of the Netherlands, even; at the moment. So: why subsidize only the rich?!, when many usually don't really need it!
