When I was a kid in the late 60's we lived about a mile away from Paine Field air port in Everett Wash. Our house had a flight path for planes right over our house. We'd see 737, 747, private planes go by all day.

I hope you get to learn what it's like to sleep under a bridge in -40c weather one day (well, definitely for more than one day) through no fault of your own. Take it from someone who's been there and has seen others from all walks of life dealing with it, both with and without mental health issues. House burns down and insurance won't pay? That's a mental health issue? Can't find a job that pays enough to rent or own is a mental health issue? Ever rising inflation and housing costs is a mental health issue? Can't get a reasonable job because you have nowhere to get a decent night's sleep and a shower? Can't get help from the government because they require a landlord to sign a rent report and most landlords are discriminatory towards people who need help and refuse to sign one? Jesus. I won't deny that most people experiencing chronic homelessness likely have mental health issues but your comment is absolutely insulting, incorrect infuriating and misinformation. You literally get the prize for the most ignorant, idiotic, hateful and insulting comment I have ever personally seen on the internet in my literal 30 years of being on the internet.

@@joshuanorman2 lack of affordable and accessible housing definitely. And mental health can contribute but is certainly not *the* reason like he said. I have a cousin who lives close to Pearson airport in Toronto and I was always fascinated by the airplanes flying overhead. I was so eager to visit her, just to be close to the planes. Her husband used to walk me to get as close to the airport as possible so I could watch, and feel them. We're talking about the mid to late 60's and I do miss it.

One thing i really miss is hanging out on the observation deck at Philadelphia International, sometimes at 1or 2 a.m. watching the 707's and DC-8's (and others) take off and land. (I'm going back a few decades, of course.) That all changed after 9/11. At the airport watching them through glass at the terminal is the best you can do now, unfortunately. Meh.

I've been there, when I just got married with my ex husbabd, he could only afford a tiny rent house very close to a busy airport in his city, Yogyakarta (the airport is no longer exist today, it was moved far away from the city a few years ago). Planes will fly by approximately every 10 minutes. At first I was deeply disturbed (I have Aspergers and I do not like loud sounds), but I managed to adapt because I loved him so much The rent was 2 floor high with a small balcony/laundry area on the roof. Sometimes we sat there for hours, eating snacks and drinks while watching the sunset and the planes, talking about the details we could see on the bottom of the big ones (I even asked my father to send his binoculars, LoL). Sometimes we played the "guess the airline" game while listening to crickets and frogs singing (in front of the house was a small rice field) in between the roaring engines. It's actually, weirdly, quite a romantic memory of our youth now, LoL.

We're still good friends now although we're living 1,500 km apart (he went back to that city after we got separated). I still help him everytime he ask for help, I don't think it's wrong for me to care even though we won't grow old together anymore. I had an attic in Osterley which is 20 mins from Heathrow by car, and every 45 seconds the plane would fly directly over our house on its runway approach. They weren't that close, but not far off. But the best part was when the Concorde would fly over back in the 80's. 3 of them, one every 30 seconds twice a day. Before we had double glazed windows (which hardly helped) the vibrations literally shook a picture off the wall, and the liquid in your glass would ripple. Whilst watching the telly, you learned to lip read. Personally I loved it.

I found it more disruptive living in my previous place on a busy main road where the noise is constant.

I worked near Heathrow and knew some people who lived there before the airport. They spent years trying to get compensated because they couldn't sell their house.

@Kevin Rhatigan To some extent, they were. Householders were able to have double or triple glazing installed along with other measures. That made the houses saleable once more.

You get used to it quite quickly. After a week or so, you’d likely sleep right through it.

In reality, you become so accustomed to the noise of low-flying, arriving aircraft that in short time you begin not to notice them much at all, if ever. I once lived near an airbase when I was a young child and can remember thinking I'd never get used to it. But I did. I don't recall it taking too long. Even today, the town I live in has countless trains passing through daily. I rarely hear them after years of being here.

I'd love to live there. How often do they fly over? I'd sit in the back garden with a beer. And you wouldn't be able to hear the kids next door!

One hell of a snooze more like it. A plane that feels like it's gonna land on your roof every 5 minutes.

When i worked for an airline many years ago i used to live near the runway. It was not a huge airport for sure but you were always reminded who you were working for. Easy to go to work for sure lol
