Ok, so, here's some math about the million dollar question: Assuming a tax rate of 50%, you get $500k. Dividing it by total amount of hours in ten years, we get approximately $57 per hour. If you get paid more than that post-taxes, this is a bad deal (granted, you'd need up to 4 years of work to accumulate this much money, assuming zero inflation). Otherwise, eh, not so much. Edit: actually, scratch that, I forgot to divide by ten lol. That's only $5.7 bucks per hour of your life, really not a great deal unless you're desperate or can make good use of the money.

To be fair, if you take the deal at say 18, you can invest that $500k to a lot more in 30 or so years and you have to consider if you were to die from old age, losing 10 years and dying in your 90s is not much worse than the average person. Even taking the average life expectancy of an American (77), you'd die at 67 which would be okay. It's only a problem if your life expectancy was low to begin with.

I think your math is a bit off. eight hours a day for five days a week for fifty weeks a year is a reasonable approximation for a year of full time work and easy to do math on that gives 2,000 working hours a year. 1,000,000/20,000 is 50. So $50 an hour before tax. This is comparing it to a wage, the million is a lump sum that you haven't needed to also pay your cost of living out of and can do what ever you want with. Saving a million or half a million over a decade is very hard.

The real result I was going for is $5.7 for an hour. Sure, there are many factors that make the lump sum a better deal than it otherwise would be, like living expenses, inflation, investment, and the ability to lift up your lifestyle to the point where you're actually going to live longer than you would had you not received the payment, but it's shockingly bad value per hour.
