Would You Rather Buy A Porsche 911 or Cayman GTS 4.0?

What's better, a base 911 or a fairly spec'd Cayman GTS? Two epic pieces of kit with one tough decision...Stick an imaginary £120k in your pocket and ask yourself the question again, £80k for decent spec'd GTS or £120k for a fairly well spec'd 911 Base...Which one do you go for?

I’ve owned 5 911’s, now have a 718 GTS 4.0. Why? It’s the best sports car they make today for roads, N/A engine (unavailable in 911), size, handling threading down UK B roads. 992 is a comically large GT, to get into a N/A 911 means a track focused GT at absurd markups and against an old 997 it’s the better car. The 911 is an icon and if you need to scratch that itch nothing else will do, or if you need rear seats. IMO the best sports car Porsche make is a 718 GTS 4.0, PDK or manual, roofless or hard top. Snap one up while you still can.

Perfect description. The 718 GTS 4.0 has the goods. Mid engine > Rear Engine. Naturally Aspirated Flat 6. I don’t think I’ll ever part with mine.

Yep, did exactly that. Had 7 911’s, a few Boxster’s and Caymans incl Spyder…..just changed into a Cayman GTS, main reason? It’s the better sports car. If you need two non usable seats and no rear boot, plus want to spend more money….then get a 911 🤔😀

Lane assist is the work of the devil. I loathe it. In over 30 years of driving I've never had any problems staying in my lane, so i certainly don't need a car trying to take over control (even if it is just a slight tugging on the wheel). I've only ever had it in hire cars and it get's turned off before I even set off. Personally, I really like the "soft" look of the base 911. I think it suits the car perfectly when it's not a GT car. Of course once you start adding wings etc to the car then the bumpers etc need to change to suit.

Back in the day (air cooled era), the base 911 was known as the purists 911 given that it was the lightest and narrow bodied. If I had a desire to replace my manual 718 Spyder with a new 911, then the base/purist would be my choice (with minimal options). I doubt I’ll get rid of the Spyder and adore what Porsche do with their mid engine range as I had a Cayman 981 GTS prior to the Spyder. It’s a phenomenal drive in the Spyder and wouldn’t hesitate getting another GTS. On UK roads, they are the sweet spot for me

When i wa shopping for 2nd hand 911 991.2 i was looking at S, GTS, and even Turbo. But i ended up with back to basic and raw 991.2 Carrera T with limited option. Its all about fun driving. Haha.

Hi Tim, great review. I do think Joe is correct, you do not need more than the BHP for the road that the base provides. I have a base 997.2 and on the road with friends I have never been left behind by anyone is an S, Turbo etc. Having driven a Taycan, a 718 Cayman, a 992 GTS4 and a 992 Turbo recently, I do not find them special enough over what I have to have me spend mad amounts of money to upgrade. If you ever look into old reviews of 911's it was always the base model that was the most preferred choice.

Had a Cayman 2.5 guards red then a base Carrara racing yellow then back to the Cayman 4.0 GT silver and I will never look back!

I ordered a brand new GTS 4.0 last year and I am still happy with it. Also drove a standard 911 for 20k more but didnt like that smaller engine compared to the 4 litre.

Cayman GTS 4.0 is a special car. That Flat 6 naturally aspirated motor in the mid-engine platform is just perfection. Not only is it a steal at 100-120k U.S. but it may be one of Porsche’s best.

​@@trigganometry168 Almost all porsches I've ever seen were in traffic. You can spot way more sport cars / supercars in big cities than anywhere else. Plenty of people use even 911s as daily cars. They're probably the most common sportscar I keep seeing

I love my Cayman 4.0 manual. N/A 911 are hard to get for msrp. I asked for one as a first time buyer and they laughed at me.

I’d take the GTS dude, as a base I can’t be happy paying that when I can get more options and on the road anyway, a very similar to drive car…if anything, the GTS felt a tad smoother?

@@GoldPlatedCheese Its a no brainer, the 4L NA Cayman GTS is a far better car than the base 911 - why? 4L NA engine and beautiful mid-engine balance. Sounds better, more responsive and greater agility. Nearly 100kg lighter, compact footprint. My personal view is the Cayman GTS both in 981 and 982 guise is one of the great all round sportscars - both are right sized for twisty roads.

Naturally aspirated, mid engine, manual transmission. You cannot buy a base 911 with a manual trans. So it’s a non starter for many people.

I was cross shopping a 992 GTS and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and purchased the 718. The 992 is an amazing grand touring car and the 718 is a bonkers sports car. I already have a 23 Macan GTS for touring, so the sports car is what I wanted. It really depends on what you’re looking for.

I LOVE the 911, but after doing 800km in a 992, and then those same roads in a Boxster, I chose the latter. It’s just so balanced on challenging mountain roads! And with Sport Chrono and PSE, it sounds glooorious. 🦘👍
