Would You Ride India’s WORST Sleeper Train?

We left the city of Hyderabad and begin the long journey to Delhi but this required a 30 hour train in second class seating in order to get there. The trains are completely sold out for months in advance in India so this was our only option and for just £25 you can't fault the price however the train itself was brutal! I've been 9 times to India! I've taken 2 dozen nighttrain up to 30 hours like Calcutta to Jammu, but I've almost never seen 2 sleeping on a berth! For sure, never foreigners! Naturally, you hate traveling in India!

Its not even one tenth brutal of journeys i had in indian trains. Having a seat in train is considered luxury in india. Sometimes i consider myself lucky that i got a decent place to stand in the train. And my god horrible smelling toilets.. Having water in toilets in trains is a big thing. 25 million Indians travel daily by train and maximum are used to this filth. So stop crying.

Hello Ben! I am an Israeli guy who had backpacked around India in 2015, 2018 and 2022 covering the entire country. I just want to say one thing to you guys: If you showing India through your videos please try to visit all the parts atleast once. Look what I know of India is it has many shortcomings but overall the country is just amazing with such an insane diversity in its geography. The regions of India vary to such an extent with Snow capped ethereal mountains aka the himalayas in the North, vast desert in Northwest, amazing plateaus in the Central region, beautiful sea coasts and tropical backwaters in the far south and mangrove forests in the east. Apart from the geography, India has such a wide variety of wildlife species many of them endangered like Royal Bengal Tigers, Rhinos, Red Panda, Snow Leopard,etc. The country has literally hundreds of different ethnic groups with languages, cultures widely different from each other for example a person of Kashmir looks completely different to a person from Kerala and both of them are again different from a Northeast Indian. Now there are many here who will take an oppurtunity to bash and stereotype India even if you have admired India mostly in the video. So that is not fair. Therefore I have an earnest request to you to please visit Northwest India ( Kashmir- Gulmarg, Pehelgam, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh- Manali, Shimla, Dharamsala, Rishikesh) Northeast India ( Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland) Kerala, Goa, Hampi, Ellora, Madurai, Oooty, Munnar, Doodhsagar. I gurantee you guys Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh as beautiful as China. Kashmir is as wonderful as Eastern Europe with its mountains. Ladakh will seem as some other wordly place. Look I am just recommending this places to you because these are the true gems which are unexplored by many tourists. They fail to get their true rewards of visting India and gets the worst aka the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Varanasi and Agra which is literally shit. The true diversity and beauty of India lies in its remote regions. There are numerous forests and wildlife reserves with a vast array of exotic species. Moreover sadly you visited Hyderabad just because it is famous, you missed the city of Vizag which is near to Hyderabad and completely resembles a western European city in cleanliness, roads and infrastructure+ it is near the sea coast. Yes! Did a few train journeys just over a month ago as I travelled around India, a 70 year old woman, on my own for a month. At least they've got toilets, unlike the 17 hour journeys I did on the bus. But were there Western style toilets opposite the Asian ones, normally situated at the end of each carriage? To be honest, I preferred the hole in the floor ones; they were, in general, cleaner! And in so many cases, the Western toilets had shoe footprints on the seat because the locals would climb up on them and squat from on top 🫣

it's all relative, I suppose. As said, rode the 30 hrs 2nd class sleeper from Amritsar to Mumbai way back in 2009; enjoyed the challenge, free meals being constantly bought for me by smiling incredibly friendly Indian passengers; loads of crazy banter and the like. I was however travelling alone; and had come through Indonesia on a shoe string...After travelling from Surabaya to Jakarta on a 32 hour slow, very slow and times pedestrain; no ac; 3rd class ticket, constant cloud of smoke and people just staring at me throughout; wooden seats packed like sardines, with zero chance of sleep; the 2nd Class sleeper was luxury!!! :)

I took a 30 hour sleeper from Amritsar to Mumbai; yes it was intense; no I didn't sleep much but when travelling alone; you get into great and mad conversations; personally I loved it, as gruelling as it was. Say what you want about India; it sorts the travellers from the tourists.

I took the 3 days train (70 hours) from Delhi to Trivandrum (deep south), non airco second class. Enjoyed it, no problems. Took the topbed ( so you can lay down during the daytime if u like) stand in the open door watching small village life. it was in 1987. Still a good memory.

@@BackpackerBen I traveled India after being inspired by you, bald, and harald. My 14 hour sleeper train experience from Varanasi to Agra was interesting to say the least. Every square inch of the floors of the entire train was packed with sleeping locals. To get to the restroom I had to walk on the beds of other passengers. Once at the restroom I had to try and hit the toilet from the doorway as the floor was 2 inches deep in sloshing.....well you know. It was a trip I'll never forget (nightmares are made from lesser things). Somehow in spite of it all I actually enjoyed it. 😉

By Indian railway standard, it was a decent. The trains that run through poor state like Bihar gets so crowded that you literally have to step on the bunks to get to the washroom. Ben has shown as is, not photoshopped. One has to keep in mind the pricepoint £25. If you take the 6 days Maharajah Express train in Rajasthan you pay £5030 / USD 6400. You get what you pay. Those who are too touchy about raw footage, go watch something else.

In November 2011 we took the sleeper train Ahmedebad to Nainital, 2AC, took 22 hours and there was mice running through the carriage, climbing in our boots so we tied the boots to the lamp on the ceiling. Great fun, jumping off to buy samosas - great way to see the country and meet locals.
