Pretty nice edit. I think it's interesting to look at the future of lofi though and how it can be spun in a way where it doesn't become stale / cheesy (which a large part of the stuff on KZbin already is). It's a great video, but I think a lot of videos and articles just revolve around the circlejerk sad loop thing, whereas I think a lot of value and potential lies in looking how it can evolve and the artists that are actually pushing the sound forward.
@von...6 жыл бұрын
I'd like to think that I am trying to help push forward past the memes of what lofi is and to just draw inspiration from it rather than limiting myself by making all of my music with "lofi" as a genre. I love what lofi means to me and how the sounds I make draw from what everyone thinks lofi is, but at the end of the day I'm just making music with no genre in mind still.

I totally get what your saying. I’ve always had such an old soul, and a taste for jazz. But I also have such a love for hip hop so to hear these classic sounds brought in to a new light is really amazing. It pushes the sounds forward and keeps them alive. Love your content by the way!
@velvetimpulse6 жыл бұрын
But how do you see the genre moving forward? Also, moving forward doesn't mean killing the traditions being created now. I mean, jazz keeps moving forward and have spun several subgenres, but you can still hear the old ways through modern artists such as Wynton Marsallis for example.

That and musically it's generally pretty boring. It's usually the same loop played over and over on top of some chords, with no real buildup or ending. It's easy to make, and so a ton of people do it. There can be great lo fi, but so much of the stuff out there just... isn't. It has it's place, everyone needs a bit of bland background noise that sounds nice, but nothing really stands out about any one song, they all kind of blend together. You can listen to hours of lo fi, and it's lovely and nice sounding and great, but in the end you're not listening to the songs, you're listening to them all, like eating a bunch of french fries -- you never pay attention to what the differences are between them, they're all just french fries. If that makes any sense. Sorry if that came across as overly negative, I really do love lo fi, but that's my take on it.

Okay, so I have a dissociative disorder called Derealization. It's pretty rare and it's basically like being disconnected from reality. Like being in a constant dream-state, though not quite. It's really difficult for me to be in the moment. It's hard for me to get my head out of the cloudy state it's in, and often times this results in days, weeks, and in extreme cases, months all blurring together. Memory loss and inability to keep track of time is a normal thing. But damn does lofi bring me down in such an incredible way. The aesthetic and the slow, dreamy music just helps me experience nothing but now. You described it perfectly yourself, it's a slow, repetitious sound and that's exactly what helps my head come down to earth. I also really love a lot of bedroom-pop, like Vansire. I use it to study unironically; fuck the memes, I just need my head focused.

I discovered lofi a year ago, as a way to listen to music that just isn't distracting. Seeing these girls study is a perfect depiction of me when listening to lofi; I think lofi is "there" with you while you study, do your homework or just chill out. It does not demand your concentration; it is additive and leaves a pleasent tune to listen to while concentrating. As you said, the world is moving fast and so is modern music aswell. Listening to, for example, Pop, HipHop or Rap (often) demands you to listen and think about what's being sung. The melody is fast paced and has a fast beat to it, automatically making you focus on what is happening in the song right now. But lofi brings the tempo down again. Ambient, repetetive and smooth; that is what lofi is about. And that makes it a perfect companion for a slow approach to everyday life.

It's not a genre with lyrics (in majority of cases), but it's something, almost like Minecraft music, it's moving, motivating, and thus, that's why it's used during studying, there are no lyrics to try to remember, it's just beats, you, and your actions.

Perfect way to summon up the simplicity and beauty that lofi exudes. A genre that is meant to put and/or keep you in a certain moment or emotion. I think that's why it's two primary target audiences are generally people who are studying or smoking. Two activities that involve a certain level of focus but are also tasks that are best when the person is "in the moment": a moment in which the listener is able to live, breathe, and feel whatever they're feeling at that given point in time. Again, excellent analysis of this genre and keep up the great work, my man.

I love lofi but it always just feels like a faceless blob. despite listening to hours of lofi and loving it i know only have a handful of songs saved. its not like other genres where i can think of diffferent songs. other than nujabes and a few others all other lofi is just a blob. doesn't help that i am never sure how much i am hearing is actually made by that person and how much is just ripped from some unnamed source with an effect over the top
@outboardgull52856 жыл бұрын
rune titan it's odd, like besides Jinsing and Nujabes that you mentioned I also can't name artists from this genre. It's so nebulous that I feel like artists need to strive to find a more unique sound or they'll be lost among the blob as you put it
@leonapoleon36736 жыл бұрын
thats cuz nobody in this genre really makes any creative risks. there are no bad songs, nor are there any real good songs. they're all sitting in that comfy uniform medium. thats why it all sounds the same, thus makin it easy to forget. songs from other genre's all have there own personal vibe. every lo-fi song has a sad anime boi vibe.
@mcgregorli21666 жыл бұрын
rune titan I think that’s the appeal of it. It’s just a blob with not much substance. No real creativity or risks as another guy in the thread said. You don’t know who made it and it’s mainly a loop of old music mixed with very simple beats. But that’s what it’s supposed to do. It’s not supposed to stand alone and it needs something to accompany it. That’s where the listener comes in. You provide that extra uniqueness and substance that it’s missing. It’s background music or elevator music. It doesn’t grab your attention and say “listen to me” like misteramazibg said it soothes you and lets you do things without having to concentrate on it. That’s why I like it.

I mean head on soundcloud, load up your favourite lo-fi playlist and put on auto-play. Very nice video. Something about your work has a unique touch and feel to it that has yet to be replicated (oh and that editing is just...wow!). Anyway I agree with a lot of the points you make about lofi. Me personally I like some lofi, I don’t like the type that just samples some piano loop and bit crushes it to death with a crumby beat, I like the more melodic type that’s a bit more involved. The type that’s both relaxed and danceable at the same time. I also like it when it samples something more obscure and unique. I still find myself drawn to it, with the aesthetic and the light vinyl / Walkman buzz noise you described, and that everything is written in all undercase letters. Some of my favorite lofi artists that I highly recommend are: bsd.u, jinsang, wünsche, scribe, lost son, layo, vanilla, eevee, and more I’m forgetting. If anyone reading wants the links for any of these artists, let me know.

Wow this video perfectly summed up what I feel about Lofi and why I enjoy it so much. Ive never been able to put into accurate words of WHY I find it so appealing, but listening to the explanations here really hits home on those reasons. Thank you

I'm going to be open with you here. In my opinion Lo-Fi is modern-day elevator music. It's easy to make, most of it is just created using loops ( instead of recordings, samples or generators like vsts). It's great for having somebody talk over or having a melodramatic vocal playing and they are very well suited for the background composition to your videos. I'm definitely not saying that you're wrong by any means, this is just my personal take. My father was in a metal band as i grew up, when I got older I fell in love with the noise scene, grindcore. I think our upbringing and culture plays a big role in our definition of interesting and entertaining sounds. As always great video though bro I love to see your take on things and I feel like I always come out of your videos with a little bit more understanding of something than I did before.

knxledge isnt this though, lofi isnt a single genre, it just means low quality hip hop

calamar - lanes that's true that is the traditional name of the genre I think it's gone a bit farther than that though it's almost like how indie mean independent but Indie is also a genre I feel like Lo-Fi is kind of Taken on a wider Spectrum. But you are correct

of course there are some conventional sounds, but there is lots of room for experimentation, look at tomppa's new work, knxledge,

calamar - lanes I agree with you there. My ears aren't personally keen too soft Eerie sounds. But like I said in the comment I think Association true music is heavily determined bye our surroundings and our upbringing.

i agree with you completely. its just that i make lofi, and have been in the scene for a while, and even tough you arenty this im tired of seeing the same old "its someone elses music looped"

a really hidden aspect of lofi is a lot of the bedroom pop diy artists out there who create all their own music and don't really sample other songs, but use very lofi effects and techniques to create a more intimate warmth to their music. It's as you said, about the moment. Hell, I never was never really happy with any music I recorded until I picked up an awful little handheld tape recorder. God awful quality but it's sooooo warm and fuzzy it makes me really love what I record

I'm so happy that someone has made a video on this because tbh I've been listening to lofi for years now, but never knew where the came from or how to explain it to people. Now I have an explanation...butter notes. Yum.

When ever I'm scrolling through memes I usually come across one that has ear-rape, and I always think I ruined my headphones so I come to one of misteramazing's videos to reassure myself that they are working fine.

Thank you so much for describing Lo-Fi as such! I really feel the same way that I'm going to do my final year thesis/research paper on this. Hopefully I'll be able see how this wonderful genre affects us. Just here to say your video is really inspiring :')

Omg, how am I just now seeing your videos! this is awesome. Every single shot seems so well thought out an methodically placed that it just makes the entire video flow so well you forget how long you have been watching and just engage with it all. This is good stuff, good stuff indeed.

I don’t know if you will read this comment , I’m a huge fan of your videos. I listen to an artist called EDEN , I’m not sure if this would ever be your type of music but there is something that gets me in the feels and I know it’s the same for a lot of other listeners , I was wondering if you could have a listen to “End Credits” and “Times like these” . If you get the same feeling it do maybe you could make a video about it . Just an idea :)

Thank you so much for making this! Also I’d suggest giving Uyama Hiroto a listen, he worked personally alongside Seba Jun and Shing02 for a long while, although he still does a few tracks with Shing02 every now and then, keep the spirit goin~ Anywho, thank you for covering this, been listening to lofi, Nujabes, Fat, Jon, etc for a long time now and haven’t taken the time or thought to look for a video like this, I just kinda happened to stumble across you.
