This video documents the story of Wounda, one of the more than 160 chimpanzees living at the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo.
Thanks to the expert care provided at Tchimpounga, Wounda overcame significant adversity and illness and was recently relocated to Tchindzoulou Island, one of three islands that are part of the newly expanded sanctuary. Dr. Jane Goodall was on hand to witness Wounda's emotional release, and now you can too.
The Jane Goodall Institute does not endorse handling, interacting or close proximity to chimpanzees or other wildlife. The rescued chimpanzees seen in this video are cared for by trained professionals at JGI’s Tchimpounga sanctuary.

Chimps express emotion in much the same way that humans do. They'll hold hands, hug, and even kiss to show solidarity and affection. I'm sure Wounda was very grateful to Dr. Goodall and Rebecca for saving her life and giving her back her freedom.

Thanks for your paradigm shifting work in the study of animal behaviour, Jane. Your research has transformed our understanding of chimpanzees without the cruelty that the medical science research establishment (and "psychologists") used before your gentle methods became accepted. “We patronize the animals for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they are more finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other Nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time.” ― Henry Beston

I rescued a very young not fledged yet baby Robin once....it's nest had been blown down and it was hypothermic and half-dead. After 2 days of resuscitation we deemed it able to return to the nest...but it wasnt found by momma-bird. So, we raised it to a strong adolescent full featered bird, capable of flight and finding meal worms on its own in our spare room. Sad to let it go, but it was time. Just flew away....nowhere this level of gratitude shown. I am jealous.
