A short while ago we came across a box of trinkets in Grace’s family home. Among the keepsakes we found a postcard with a picture of a young solider on the front, Sgt Warner; Grace’s great granduncle. He died on the "19th of December 1917 of wounds in action on the 30th of November 1917". He was part of the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards during the First World War. On the back of the postcard were the words of James Whitcomb Riley's poem 'He is not Dead’.
This beautiful poem and postcard inspired us to make this little piece.
During the entire War the Irish Guards lost over 2,300 officers and men and won 406 medals including 4 Victoria Crosses.
