In this video I test the output power and factory antenna on my Wouxun KG-935G. This is followed up by testing Nagoya NA-701G & NA-771G aftermarket antennas.

Howdy, I like the videos and they are pretty helpful as I am new to GMRS. I have been checking in on the GMRS e-coms net lately which got me thinking... When I am up in the mountains out of cell service, who do I contact if there is an emergency? I have Garmin GPS watch that will give me my coordinates so I can tell someone where I am and what the issue is, but who am I calling? If you were interested, I'd really like to see a video of what to do when there is an emergency and all I got is my med kit and a radio. For all intents and purposes, assume we all have our Ham and GMRS licenses. I don't have a HAM license but I am really kicking it around just so I don't have any issues if I need to transmit on a ham band for an emergency or for other general use purposes. To clarify, I'm not transmitting on any Ham bands currently lol thanks, Jake - WRWU554

That is a great topic suggestion. I will definitely address that. In the meantime, search out the term "Wilderness Protocol". Lots of good information there that I will likely cover. Also it's fortunate that the 462.700 repeater has great coverage throughout the Kings & Sequoia National Parks. And many thanks for checking in on the GMRS EmComm net. We're building a nice sized group.

Hey man, awesome video! Have you tested the transmission power of the ocean The q10G? This antenna is fixed, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on this antenna. Is this antenna as good as the Nagoya 771G? Thanks for any input. I keep having a guy on the repeater telling me I should get this antenna, and I have to keep telling him that this antenna is a fixed antenna. Anyhow, as said before, I’m curious on your thoughts on this radio. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

They can keep their fixed antenna on a $210 radio. I noped right out on that one.

I would like to mention that GMRS is not another ham band. It is its own separate service. I should not be hearing the term "QTH" on GMRS. Thank you that is all.

Why does everyone test there antennas in the horizontal position? Do you use it that way? Laying flat against god knows what underneath the table. Do you think they test these antennas at factory this way. Go outside with the meter attached in a real world situation and test it there. Then make your comparison of different antennas. Just say'n..

Every Nagoya antenna i have ever used, is a 1.01 to a 1.02 match. There is no way possible for it to be accurate up against that table, or with that particular meter. The radio need to sit straight up and down with a meter that can emulate a ground plane. I know the way I test is correct because the swr comes out on those antennas just exactly as they do at the factory. Nagoya goes through quite a bit to bring those antennas to those kind of swr level’s and they are dead on. I’m willing to bet, that with a true accurate test, that those antennas will be exactly what I said they are. I have nevehad one over a 1.09 at its worst.

I really like your test. But I have to respectfully disagree on the way they are performed. I do this alot in my spare time. And I have come to what in my opinion, is the proper way to take these test. I realize that you are performing the test with the radio laying down to simulate it being up against your body. But it’s inaccurate. The reflection from the surface of tha table is going to be alot more then your body, as the waves mostly pass right through humans. What I do is stand the radio straight up and down with the meter connected just like you have. It’s far more accurate. Also he type of meter you are using has no way to emulate, a ground plane as your hand and body do. With that being said, I use a surecom sw33 plus. Now everyone knocks this meter, but it’s because almost everyone is using in wrong. With the radio in front of you standing up as I described, you need to grab it with three fingers from behind, thumb, index, ring. The one that know how to use it end up wrapping their whole hand around the meter. This will give an inaccurate reading. I’m talking about grabbing the meter itself. I have gone to great lengths to find out exactly how to use this meter from the company itself. It is dead accurate. It’s not intended to lay on the table like the one youare using. Most people consider it junk because they are ignorant on how to use it. Now for power testing with it, is completly different. The power test is to be done with the radio in the same position straight up and down, but with the hand off off the meter. It’s one of the most accurate ways to do a real world test. Continuing on. The radios at the factory are not calibrated for a dummie load on power. They are calculated with the factory antenna, after all that is how we use it making a dummie load obsolete. Makes sense. I would much rather know the output of the radio with the antenna, than a dummie load since that is the way it will be used. Anyway not complaining, just a different way to do it. P.S with sw33 plus, it actually shows exactly how to put your hand on the meter in the instructions, most people miss that as I did as well. Anyway, great videos, I appreciate your channel thanks for sharing.

You are so right. I just made a comment up above. I've been an amateur for 25 years (I can hear everyone saying "Oh here we go") and it drive me nuts when I see people test antennas this way even if they mean well. It would be like me laying mt 40 dipole on the ground and taking my readings there. Might as well leave the dummy load on and say "See how well it works"
