Mr T and Ozzy convinced me to finally play WoW after all those years. I had those little bombs that you threw at people that forced them to have a night elf mohawk head. Also, my parents wouldn't buy it for me, and our crappy old Dell/Compaq/whatever we had at the time probably couldn't even have ran it anyway. Had to wait till I had a job and could buy my own pc and copy/sub of the game. EDIT: I do wish I could have played wow from the start though. Seems like it was alot of fun. I was stuck playing the free super grindy korean mmo's though :[

I was playing FFXI at the time and seeing wow as an american mmo that was now very popular I joined up in 2006. I already knew the lore having played WC3, feels like putting my shirt on in the morning everytime I log on.

God to think they were so much better at advertising without actual glorified businessmen whose sole job it is to do advertising to make money. These were so simple very little work production wise with the main cost going to the celebrities by probably 4-5 times the cost of everything else in the ad, even then it probably costed less then the shit they put out now. Involving celebrities in the ads was pure genius and it made the game feel main stream when MMORPGs weren't even close to being there. It shouldn't be understated just how revolutionary the celebrity ads were and honestly if they were looking to pump blood back into the game running another series of them would probably do wonders, because the goal for them wasn't truly at gamers but at the people who never touched something like WoW before. Wotlk classic would of been a beautiful time to do it too as most of the ads popped up around that time, but alas these professional businessmen got no clue how to advertise shit, just imagine what a series of ads involving current celebrities would do for the game. Its an oddly not abuse scheme thats extremely effective, fortnite BLEW up getting celebrity collabs for streamers, even FFXIV took a page out the book during shadowbringers using tom holland in an ad, both saw huge success from those campaigns. Sure it no doubt costs tons of money but god damn has it shown to be worth it, and it doesn't have to even be a super crazy ad you can skip the CGI and such and just slap a celebrity reading a script like a youtuber during a in-video promotion and BAM tons of interest in the game.

Hiring a celebrity to say "This game is cool" - is the laziest, greediest, and un-creative way of advertising the game. It just screams "CAPITALISM" right in your face, and has nothing to do with the game itself. The new ones are FAR better, since they actually show the charm of Azeroth, with cozy taverns and fantasy vibes.

@@almas4663 you realize it only grew to what it became cause of the celebrity ad campaign? No normal person was going to play something like WoW back in 2005 the whole MMORPG genre was very estranged from even the gaming community but WoW's ad campaign using moderately pertinent celebs captured the interest of people who never touched the genre or really touched games in general. Much like the drake playing with ninja on fortnite touching fan bases that haven't been exposed to games is nothing but straight gains. WoW's current ads are trying to pull past players back instead of bringing new ones in and its a pool that gets smaller and smaller cause they find a way to fuck it up enough times people stop coming back. You only like the current ad campaign cause its targeted at you as a past player.
