John Fogerty said in an interview with Rolling Stone that he got the imagery from an old movie he watched called The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941). He wanted the apocryphal feel of impending doom, but it wasn't until the band was actually learning the song that he realized he'd set it to a finger-snapping happy-sounding tune. He said that dichotomy didn't bother him at the time so he left it.

The song sounds like it is about the apocalypse. It was Vietnam time, and young people, including CCR, had a very negative outlook on how things were going. This went hand and hand with the Hippies, who were so hopeless about how things were going that they all got high, joined communes, ran them poorly, and did their best to make a new kind of good life for themselves. This was also within a year after the Robert Kennedy (1968), Martin Luther King (1968), and four years after the Malcolm X (1965) assassination. The Kent State Massacre happened in 1970, the year after this song. A lot of good people being killed here too, not just in Vietnam.

On the third chorus of "theres a bad moon on the rise" a pair of B-40 RPG's hit and the ground attack by VC and NVA began. We had a 4 deuce battery manned by troopers of the 101st. It quickly became a time of immense concern. With the assistance of gunships and Marine/Army Airborne coordination we beat them off just as they had half overrun our position. I think this song was a metaphor for the times which felt apocalyptic- which included the assassinations of President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but mostly the Vietnam War which divided the country and there was a feeling of doom- especially for those who served in Vietnam, knowing they could die at any time. By the way, I love your reactions, they are fresh and genuine. Your true emotions bring back the feelings of hearing these songs years ago. Much love.

You are right about them coming from California. CCR came out of the San Francisco music scene, but there is no question that they embraced a southern sound and southern scenes in their music. If you were born on the bayou, you are in the south! Check out "Proud Mary", "Suzie Q", and their cover of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" -- all excellent CCR standards. Also, when you do any CCR song, you may find there is a shorter single version and a longer album version. Make sure you do the longer album versions as the real highlight of many CCR songs are the long instrumental jams they do, and the shorter versions that were edited for the little 45rpm single records are just not the same without those instrumentals.

California boys but heavy, natural southern leanings in their music. This song is about bad mysterious things that happen. Spooked swamp stuff to me. Not Vietnam as was often thought
@Spiritbro773 жыл бұрын
It's about Nam. Often times what artists tell you is half true. Run through the jungle in the 60's meant Nam. That it ALSO meant here is probably accurate. It's saying trouble is on the way, things are about to get crazy and they did. I was a kid but I remember all of that. Especially Kent State because I live about 35 miles from there give or take. Seeing flag draped coffins on the TV every night coming back from Nam. Crazy days indeed.

@@Spiritbro77 Sorry Spirit it’s not about Nam John has consistently stated including in his autobiography that the song is about there being too many guns. CCR's musical style encompassed roots rock, swamp rock, blues rock, Southern Rock, country rock, and blue-eyed soul. Belying their origins in the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area, the band often played in a Southern rock style, with lyrics about bayous, catfish, the Mississippi River, and other elements of Southern United States iconography. The band's songs rarely dealt with romantic love, concentrating instead on political and socially conscious lyrics about topics such as the Vietnam War. John Fogerty explained that the lyrics of "Bad Moon Arising" were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. This is where he got the idea for the words "I feel the hurricane blowin', I hope you're quite prepared to die." Overall, he said the song is about the "apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us."

@@gooberfleming Yeap. CCR helped define the Southern Rock genre. All bands do not have to sound exactly the same for it to be the same genre, just look at how varied rock within it's genre can be or pop. Southern Rock also isn't directions to where a person lives. That's just silly. There is no swamp rock genre, although the term swamp rock does describe the sound of several of their songs like born on the bayou. John fogerty even stated that he was considered his music rock, and went on to say that several of his songs (he mentioned three) were swamp rock. I don't get the preference to call them swamp rock as the genre of a band, any band, but in particular CCR. But if you want to go around saying 'I love swamp rock' then go ahead.I It's no skin off my back what you do. But CCR is as Southern Rock as you can get with the exception of Lynyrd Skynyrd. As far as southern creds, my entire family is from LA, I was born in Rocky Top. And if your from Alabama you know what I mean.

Perhaps recently there may be people that start a 'swamp rock' band, people do crazy things. But I'm talking back 15 years ago or more, not something made up to suit the narrative of today. Bluegrass has theirs, obviously Southern Rock has theirs, etc... And you can't say CCR as one of your examples.
@stanleymyrick40682 жыл бұрын
@@gooberfleming Also funny, is that people that do reactions to CCR near always say something along the lines of 'It has that Southern Rock' feel to it. And then someone "corrects" them in the comments. LOL But there are more important things going in the world right now than worry about it.

I did a tour in Nam. Credence was one of the groups that sung what we called Our Anthems... 'specially: "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Who'll Stop the Rain", and "Run Through the Jungle". Came home, bought the album, almost immediately scratched it. I transferred it to a Cassette, scratch and all. Still play it on my SONY Rack System... I know, I know, I'm old! For those of us who've seen the rain... Welcome Home Brothers.

I am a native Kansan who has lived in this State most of my life. I knew a number of storm chasers who loved this song. Only it was tornados, not hurricanes. Not going out a night took a different meaning from them. Storm chasing a night is VERY dangerous. Thank you for your reaction.

Some other great CCR songs: Proud Mary (yes the same one Tina covered), Have You Ever Seen The Rain, Who'll Stop The Rain, I Put a Spell On You, Long As I Can See The Light. They did a great cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine. If you do that one look for the long version.

"Center Field" by John Fogerty they'd both love too, Jordan probably would like bc of some the lyrics, but love the music in that one too! All of CCR songs are great tho! Even their covers of songs like "I Put A Spell On You" which their version on their "Chronicles" album is my favorite version of anyone's so far, well Annie Lennox's version is right there by it IMO, & I've heard so many covers and versions of that song but theirs just shines brighter for me! Also they're covers of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" is terrific. If we're talking CCR songs, some of the greatest are: (in no specific order or ranking):.... "Long As I Can See The Light" (Put A Candle In The Window) "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" "Lodi" "Who'll Stop The Rain" "Green River" "Proud Mary" (their Version) "Someday Never Comes" "Run Through The Jungle" "Looking Out My Backdoor" (that one would be cute for the kids, since it was written bc of his son and from the viewpoint of a child's imagination, altho I thought forever it was written from just a trippie hippie experience (😉wink, wink😏)

Years ago, I belonged to a club where we could take turns performing covers of songs on stage in front of other members, friends, family, anyone interested in turning up to just listen and enjoy the music. Bad Moon Rising was one of the songs I enjoyed performing. One day the club secretary came up and said, "you're up next, right? Are you doing a fast song?" I said "of course" and she replied, "thank god! The audience is starting to fall asleep!" - the current performer was performing a soft, slow song, as had a number of the previous performers, and even the backing band was looking a bit bored. So I went out on stage when the singer had finished and I swear our lead guitarist had an evil gleam in his eye as I stepped up to the microphone... when the opening chords of Bad Moon Rising ripped out through the speakers, half of the audience jumped in shock. Certainly woke them up. Really love this song.

@@75Isobel I thought so too and then I looked it up. They played "Bad Moon Rising" that same evening before he turned into a werewolf for the first time.
