Bowie was a solo artist, and over the years, his backing band had several musicians who were with him for years at a stretch. He collaborated closely with a few producers and instrumentalists (Tony Visconti, Brian Eno, Mike Garson, Mick Ronson), but he was the chief creative force in almost every instance.

Comparing him to Prince is a good observation. Bowie was VERY androgynous and wore dresses and makeup on occasion. He was openly queer (Bisexual, specifically) in the 1970s before any other star of his magnitude. This was his first hit, from 1969 (the video was shot three years later). He changed his image and sound ALL THE TIME. But he's one of the great fulcrums of popular music. So many genres (Punk, Art Rock, Glam, New Wave, Synthpop) and key artists (Prince, Kate Bush, Sex Pistols, and pretty much every 80s band with eyeliner and synthesizers) owe much inspiration (and in many cases) their careers to him. And they will be the first to admit it. He's one of the most beloved rockers of his generation because his music still means something 50 years later. His career didn't even stop when he died in 2016 because he planned his final album release around his own impending death. Brilliant!

Bowie expressed himself in so many different ways that he had a whole other persona. Literally, he called himself Ziggy Stardust as well. He was both himself and that character/persona, whatever you want to call it. He was a musical genius and I do think your perception of the comparison to Prince is a pretty good one.

I found your reaction to this fascinating. You even managed to pronounce his surname correctly, lol. He is one of the most influential artists of all time. Not only because he kept changing his musical style (sometimes with every new album), but because he would usually create a persona and embody that for the cover art, promotional videos and concert tours. He plays numerous instruments, including saxophone and he uses his vocals as yet another instrument. This song was recorded in 1969 and produced by the fabulous Gus Dudgeon. The bass player is the wonderfully named, Herbie Flowers! Hahaha! 😃

David Bowie has soo many levels and recreations of himself. Try Changes, Let's Dance, Fame, Golden years, Dancing in the streets with Mick Jagger. David Bowie was a solo artist and collaborated with quite a few artists. Great reaction as usual my friend. Peace out ✌️ ☮️

David Bowie was unique and kinda hard to explain. He created a stage persona, Ziggy Stardust, that he used for a while. He was very creative and innovative and had a lot of good songs such as: Changes, Fame, Starman, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, Suffragette City, Young Americans, Modern Love, and more. Check them out.

Bowie is a brilliant artist. Throughout his career he went through many different phases and personas. He's a true performer in every aspect. Songs to check out: Young Americans, Life on Mars, Let's Dance, Station to Station, Changes, Suffragette City, China Doll, Fame, Fashion, Heroes. I can go on and on but that can get you started. You never know what you're going to hear but you know it's going to be excellent!

To get yet another take on the many styles and personas David Bowie projected, I would suggest Heroes, live in Berlin, either 2000 or 2002, can’t remember which year. This shows him as himself, no personas, having worked through his issues and coming out on top. His joy and energy are contagious.

Ziggy Stardust (that look) was a character kind of. His wife at the time kind of dressed up the band. It was a glam rock thing. It caught on and was really cool at that time. David didn't just stick to that. He was very innovative.

I love how the best 70's artists played with stereo or even quadraphonic recording (as the technology was improving). That's what gives you different sounds on the right vs. left channels. Bowie was a master at continuously changing his sound and working with various players to help him achieve new sounds. He was always his own genre or chameleon. I wish you could experience the greatest 70's music played on 70's era hi-fi receivers and speakers...it was so much better than the digitized equipment used today.

Heroes, Changes, Fame, Let’s Dance, Suffragette City, Rebel Rebel… and the list goes on. All unique, all pure genius. Personally, he has a son from his first marriage, he then married the model Iman and had a daughter. Bowie was a showman, costumes and stage performance were a big part of his career. He could also act. Bowie was a musician on a soul level, he just had that thing that once in a lifetime artists do.

During that particular time frame Bowie was identified as being androgenous. He did wild hair, make up & crazy costumes. He mellowed out going into the eighties adopting the eighties style persona & looks.

Would love you to do life on mars and ashes to ashes which was 11yrs after this and mentions major tom. The one I'd like you to do the most is his performance of starman on top of the pops. It influenced so many people from the song to his image. Top of the pops was a music show on bbc1 60's-00's.back in the 60's,70's we only had 3 tv channels in the uk.they weren't 24hrs and you didn't get repeats So everyone made sure they were in front of the one tv you'd have in the house to watch top of the pops. The next day people would be talking about the show at work, school and the pub. The show was such an influence on people who were or would become musicians. Unfortunately streaming music and the internet killed the show.

He covered all types of music. But favorites were his funk and soul: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers and David Sanborn on killer alto saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. [Luther and David both on Dick Cavett talk-show video...and Bowie did Soul Train video] ...Also rhythm guitarist Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). … Sample his Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner (also with him in one of her concert videos)... Knock on Wood (David Live, 1975). “1984” (from Diamond Dogs album. Sounds like “Shaft.” Recorded by Bowie, later by Tina Turner) A friend of the the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning. Married to Somali super-model Iman.

Classic track. Mr D, if you haven't seen the movie "2001, A Space Odyssey" please watch it. It was made in 1968, but you won't believe how amazing the effects are in that film and how it draws you in. Just be patient to get past the first 20 minutes, even though that scene in itself keeps you watching. If you have seen it, then ignore this message, Lol.
