I can not even begin to describe how GREAT this group is! You haven't even scratched surface of their catalog of hits. Almost everybody on earth knows the Smoke on the Water riff. This album introduced two new members of Deep Purple - David Coverdale on lead vocals, and Glenn Hughes on bass and co-lead vocals - they're both singing on the song "Burn". Coverdale later went on to form Whitesnake, and Hughes has had a long career which continues to this day. I read something very interesting about "Burn"'s guitar riff. Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore mentioned in an interview that he came up with the riff while trying to play a George Gershwin song from the 1920s called "Fascinting Rhythm", and sure enough, that single musical phrase is identical to both songs, but that's definitely all they have in common. You have to give Ritchie credit for being honest.

Agree… Hughes & Coverdale alternating lead singing duties, & harmonies and Blackmores savage guitar… Blackmore has always been such a polarizing figure in the annals of Rock. His musical genius & guitar playing were groundbreaking . But his fickle behavior and the way he summarily excommunicated band members destroyed what he helped to create. But it also gave him the opportunity to rebuild & rebrand every project he was ever involved with. From Dio to Graham Bonnet to Joe Lynn turner as lead vocalists in Rainbow. And from Ian Gilliam to Coverdale in Deep Purple… and then back to Gilliam (I think). And a seemingly revolving door of drummers & other musicians that he just couldn’t get along with or guys that grew tired of his petulant child act. It was frustrating for us fans… but it was never boring!

My favorite Deep Purple song, for sure! Amber was so right that Ian Paice's drumming is the match that sets this song on fire! It's like he's paying homage to Mitch Mitchell for his drumming on Jimi Hendrix's song "Fire" :) Fun fact Jay and Amber...Did you know the vocalist on this album is none other than David Coverdale (frontman and leader of Whitesnake)? They also had a secret weapon in bassist/ co-vocalist Glenn Hughes. Not their most famous lineup, but did they ever deliver on this track:) !

Great reaction guys! To cut a long story short, Ian Gillan (Voc) and Roger Glover (Bass) were out and David Coverdale (Voc) and Glenn Hughes (Bass/Voc) were in. 'Burn' was the first album released by the short lived Mark III lineup. The Stormbringer album would follow in 1975 before Ritchie Blackmore left to form Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, featuring Ronnie James Dio on vocals. "Mistreated" is a great song that David Coverdale (Whitesnake) and Rainbow performed in their respective sets for years. The title track of the Stormbringer album, 'Stormbringer' is great too.

Jon Lord, Ian Paice, and Ritchie Blackmore were each legendary talents. Jon and Ritchie, in particular, were classically trained and they used that music theory to chart a unique path that became the template for every speed metal band that came after. A great showcase of proto-metal is the song "Space Truckin". Packed with drum fills, a solid obligatory guitar hook/riff, and Ian Gillan's screaming vocals.

Deep purple at this point in time still had the master on guitar , Ritchie Blackmore. The solo is awesome. The song itself is timeless. Winner all the way.👌

As has been recommended, "Lazy" is a must react. "Stormbringer" is pretty darned good as well.

Ritchie Blackmore was one of my main influences when I was learning to play guitar. He is a damn great guitarist. I think the Smoke on the Water riff is one that almost all guitar players learn first when the begin

This was the version of DP with Glenn Hughes on second vocals and bass with David Coverdale on main vocals. He went on to form Whitesnake. I was lucky enough to see DP on the tour for this album back in the 1970's. It still sounds as good today with the driving drums of Iain Price pushing the song along matching the guitar of Richie Blackmore and the organ of Jon Lord. Thanks for taking me back to my teenage years.

For me, by far their greatest album, everything came together perfectly on this album. And basically having two lead singers was so great. David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes swapping chops was just awesome. I have loved this album since it came out in 1974. The perfect hard rock album.

I think having such incredible organ playing is what really set Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin ahead of bands that did not. It gives their music more colors to play with.
