I seen Deep Purple on the Perfect Stranger's tour, mid eighties. And i seen Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow band in the late seventies on the Down to Earth tour. Amazing! 🙂

Yes, saw ELP that summer in a packed Yale Bowl in New Haven CT, holy crap, we thought the whole stadium was going to spin into space as they went bonkers. Great show! California Jam 1974 was one of the best concerts ever.

@@ER_59 I agree, Keith Emerson (ELP) and Rick Wakeman (Yes) are both amazing keyboard players. Of course ELP and Yes are more Prog rock than Deep Purple. Jon Lord would be my #1 Hard Rock keyboard and Emerson and Wakeman would be my favorite Prog Rock Keyboard players. All three are great.

I was not there but saw them within a couple weeks of this show at a big outdoor concert in Hartford CT. Aerosmith was second on the bill, ripping through their first 2 albums and the biggest surprise was the appearance of Ronnie James Dio and Elf as the opener. You could see he was a talent and wondered what was next for him (for me, more Ronnie, I saw him 3 times in Rainbow and 4 times with Black Sabbath, I now feel very fortunate considering what people think of him now). For another great Deep Purple tune from the show you just saw (California Jam 1974), try You Fool No One, John Lord on organ and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar are immense and have powerful solos. Well worth checking out, Ritchie at his best, enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I saw Glenn Hughes a few years ago. His voice is virtually unchanged. Miyako from Lovebites has covered this on piano on her recently released covers EP….a reaction from you would be cool. PS, I love your theme song…so 60’s.

Millie great rection, thanks! I'm a huge fan of Glenn Hughes, here Glenn was only 22, now he's 72 and still sings and performs phenomenally. React to something else from him, maybe his live version "Whiter shade of pale"? The lead singer of Deep Purple here is David Coverdale, you're right, David has a blues voice, it's worth listening to his acoustic performances from Japan in the nineties, for example "Solider of fortune", David has a unique voice.

This is the mk3 lineup. Child in time was the “classic” mk2 lineup. Deep purple was a revolving door of band members. Mk2 was Gillan on vocals, Glover on bass with Blackmore on guitar, Lord on keyboards and Paice on drums. Mk3 was Coverdale on vocals, Hughes on bass with Lord, Blackmore and Paice. Look up Blackmores band Rainbow and you’ll see some more fantastic keyboard players.

Sorry, but you are wrong! I saw the band in 1991 also, in Rio. They were almost in their classic line up: Richie Blackmore (guitars), Ian Pace (drums), Roger Glover (bass) and Jon Lord (keys), with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. Ian Gillan and Steve Morse came in 1997, six years after.

Apparently, I got taken to see Deep Purple when I was little, right around this time. I don't remember much of the show. Got to see them again around 2008. This one I do remember. Fantastic show. Amd while some would rank Rick Wakeman at the tops for rock keyboard, I give that rank to Jon Lord. The man was phenomenal. His sound was so distinctive. Ian Paice on drums was my main influence to become a drummer.

Omg , in 1974 I was an 8 yr old stud to be lol. I remember the threads and the music. Back in the day where they plugged in the instruments and mics. The energy and passion in the performance is not seen today.I could feel Bass in the pit of my stomach thumping away. Gotta love the white suit, black platforms and hair. lol

I was there.April 1974 California Jam.Ontario motor speedway. 300,000 of us there, 10 bands in this concert, Started at 10 Am ended 10 PM. ELP finished it. I got sunburned bad.Smoked a lot of herb.

I remember Jon Lord was doing at a show in Cleveland in February 1985 , the show sold out so fast they decided to play the next night also, I went to both shows lucky me lol, they even beat WMMS radio crew in a game of soccer, yes Ritchie was a good soccer player too 🍺🍻

Jon Lord can easily be said to be one of the best ever. You would also want to look into Rick Wakeman of Yes and Keith Emerson of ELP. The replaced origianal vocalist Ian Gillian with two voices: David Coverdale (Whitesnake) and Glenn Hughes.

The vocalist here is David Coverdale who later was the lead vocalist in Whitesnake , previous to Mr Coverdale was Ian Gillan who later rejoined the band and is still today touring with Deep Purple

The "second" vocalist is the bass player Glenn Hughes, aka The Voice of Rock, the White Stevie Wonder. Yes, he did a bunch of stuff with Rata Blanca. I was at a 1983 concert where all the old 'band got together", and it was pretty cool. But they turned the sound up so high (no, not up to eleven), which made it very hard to differentiate between a 'wall of sound' and serious orchestral brilliance. My ears were ringing three days later. And so, a few days ago, I met someone who was a sound engineer on AC/DC concerts back then, and he said this was just marketing, as no one could ever listen to that sort of decibel level for long before they'd be deaf to all the nuances in even the cheapest pub band location.

This was a festival called. California Jam, April 6, 1974, I was there with my dad he was the sound engineer for Rare Earth. I was 12. It was crazy.. The stuff I seen backstage would make Caligula blush.😮👉🤯👈🥳🤪😱☠️💥 The line up was Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, the Eagles (with Jackson Browne sitting in for Bernie Leadon), Seals and Crofts, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Yes, this was vocalist David Coverdale fronting Deep Purple from 1974 - '76 w/ co-vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes... They replaced vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover (Gillan quit... Glover was replaced at guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's orders). David Coverdale formed the band Whitesnake in the late 70's and they became a huge commercial success in the 80's and beyond... Whitesnake actually performed 'Burn' in concert and re-recorded some of Coverdale's Deep Purple tracks as 'The Purple album' in memory of late keyboardist Jon Lord (who played in Whitesnake for a few years before Deep Purple reunited in 1984). Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) is an iconic musician, but he was often unpredictable and hard to please... and his volatility pushed vocalist Ian Gillan out of the band by 1973... Blackmore himself was planning to quit, but Purple's managers convinced him to stay; he agreed to, only if Roger Glover was fired... What was strange was that Blackmore hired Roger Glover for his band Rainbow in the 70's and early 80's. Deep Purple in 1973 had 4 albums on the US charts and were taking off around the world, so breaking up the band made little sense. Hiring Glenn Hughes on bass from the UK band Trapeze, an unknown singer David Coverdale was picked for Deep Purple... Ritchie Blackmore seemed inspired again and put some of his best playing into the 1974 album 'Burn' ... and it was a huge hit. Deep Purple were touring in a jet and making million$ on tour. But for some reason, Blackmore did not enjoy playing w/ the band's new line-up and took issue w/ Glenn Hughes' 'funk' style of playing bass... The band wrote and recorded the next album 'Stormbringer' in 1974, but Blackmore was not into that record... he was already writing for a solo project and left Deep Purple in 1975 to form the band Rainbow w/ vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Glenn Hughes said that in hindsight, replacing Ritchie Blackmore was a mistake... "You couldn't replace Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin... that was unthinkable..." But ex-James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin was hired by Deep Purple and recorded the album 'Come taste the band' in 1975... However, Purple fans did not like the new guitarist or the new music. After a series of tour mishaps... Hughes and Bolin also had serious drug problems on tour as well... Deep Purple split up in 1976. Tommy Bolin passed away soon after from an OD.

Millie, How about some feed-back??? I do not recall if this song has it. But they do use that Hammond classic ROCK organ. Their biggest song was "Smoke on the Water". AND "My Woman from Tokyo", Burn, and Hush. May I suggest you locate them and give them a listen. Especially Smoke on the Water....

Millie This lineup of Deep Purple disbanded in 1976. David Coverdale (singer, not bassist) founded his own band, Whitesnake. Coverdale at 71 retired from touring after Whitesnake's last tour because of health problems.

This line up was just brilliant. Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord are in my fav musicians band along with Bonham, Plant, and Geezer Butler. I saw Deep Purple in the 70's (can't remember when exactly) at Wembley Arena, but unfortunately it was the late Tommy Bolin tour, and it wasn't great.
