Welcome to another video.
Don't forget to leave me a comment why we start the engine up etc. etc. But ! This car was delivered with tapping noise and heavy smoke coming from the exhaust . We start the engine only to listen to it and try to identify what can be wrong . Once the oil filter was out we spotted some metal debris on it but the engine oil had almost no contamination . After we started taking it apart we were actually shocked how this engine killed itself ... Question is after all this , is ti possible to build it up again?
Thanks for watching , if you want to know what we up to daily follow us on instagram

As a recently retired mechanic I am bewildered as to how we have come to having very expensive cars whose engines have components made of crap. I have worked on old Aston Martins ,Jaguars XK120,140,150's old BMW , Mercedes ,VW Audi everything, through to modern cars. I rarely remember rockers breaking , on a PSA hdi engine when the cambelt broke , the rockers, snapped along a weak point saving the engine. A series mini's hitting fantastic revs after a missed gear change...and ...nothing happened. I remember a VW employee telling me that the design life of their products was five years...Then you trade it in for a new one. It was amazing that timing chains became a service item, then the sprockets , now made of sintered material that hook and wear . Then finally roller rockers.... I have seen duplex chains on BMW and Merc engines with virtually no stretch after mega miles with just ordinary service intervals and old mineral oils . I enjoy your channel , but despair of the engineering and build quality of modern German cars.

Yeah but duplex chains create too much friction, which decreases power and increases fuel consumption. Then you have longer oil changes (fuel dilution). The sprockets also have fewer teeth than the older engines (increased torque transfer on the chain + added chordal action). All this makes the chain fail far quicker. I don't buy German as they put all the money into the interiors (which are fantastic) but then skimp on absolutely everything else... and never anything with a timing chain. PSA HDi engines are quite possibly the most reliable engines we have in the UK.. even if there is a timing chain inside of it!

Honestly I think Audi are building their engines with “stock” tolerances in mind more than ever, to save money. The moment you map a car you are messing with so many variables, heat, pressure and force. Reason after many years of tuning my cars, my A8’s engine will not be mapped, just serviced properly with the best of everything, and I drive her properly and hard when up to temperature. If ever I want a faster Audi than I have I will buy one, which incidentally I do not. I am also aware rocker arms can fail on non tuned cars too. Brilliant video thank you guys..🙌

Depends on the production date. I have a b9 S4 dated 3/19 and have the updated ones that are not prone to failure. Although a lot of people say 7/19 is the cutoff date. There are some other cases of S4's produced before 7/19 with the more durable bearings. You can easily check with a borescope to make sure. Of course then you still have PCV and water pump failure looming in the future 😂

Hopefully someone will make some uprated billet rockers for these engines. I still believe the oil is a key contributor in most modern engine failures… oil change regime is far to long and needs to be reduce by at lease 50%. These long service intervals are there for the lease companies and the ecco demands imposed by governments. Do yourselves a favor and do a first service at 500-1000 miles and then oil changes every 6000 miles max there after… the chains, guides, cams and bearings will love you.

The reason I ask is because when I look at carfax reports on used audis, the dealers always just put 'scheduled maintenance' until about 50-60k miles when they finally add in 'oil change'. Seeing these kinds of failures on even stock audis makes me think very likely audi dealers are massively defrauding people by not changing their oil even at their extended intervals.

One question I always wonder that when you drop the engine as you did for this S4, do you always have to "extract/empty out" the refrigant/cooling or disconnect the A/C system and then refill it when putting back the engine or there is a work around in these Audi? But I see AC compressor is hanging soooooooo, does it means A/C system still intact and loop remains closed?

Starting to look like tuning an Audi is not such a great idea unless you do it right by building an engine to handle the increase in power, ie, good rods and forged pistons. Cars are built to a budget and that means that the engine needs to be built to its share of the overall budget. So most of them have chocolate pistons.

Right, so the car is a premium grade audi - S4. not created to be driven like a motorway salesman in a modern diesel. They're built to be hussled. I cannot believe that a modern day performance Audi, has to suffer these issues. Makes it embarrassing to own, not to mention the cost of repair. Unreal. It seems that if you own any post 2015 Audi, standby for eye watering break downs. Why would anyone want one? A friend has just traded his Jag 4x4 SUV, for an S5......Why?!? I am an A7 owner, of several years, but can't wait to get rid of it, and go back to BMW. Great content as always Tomas, and equally amazed that the Audi dealer couldn't identify it's issue.
