I'll tell you a personal story about this song. It was a favorite of my brothers, who passed away in 2010. As we were leaving the hospital just after he died, this song came on the radio. I felt like he was telling us that everything was ok. As you near the end of the song where the music changes and the orchestra changes tempo, I imagined my brother climbing the stairway to heaven in time with the music... Then he reaches the top and as the music changes again, the gates of Heaven open up and he is greeted by St. Peter. The gates then close behind him and we are left to be amazed at the Glory of God... This song still gives me chills every time I hear it because of the connection to my brother Andy and the fact that it came to us right after he died. ELO has earned it's place in the hearts of those who love Classic Rock. And how lucky we are that Jeff Lynn went on to make music with other acts and as a solo artist for many years afterwards. Incidentally, E.L.O. stands for Electric Light Orchestra.

First I heard was the first eponymous LP issued in 1971...it was like a revelation! IIRC Mr Blue Sky was 1977, the "Out of the Blue" album - but this recording is nearly 40 years after that. Jeff Lynne is remarkably durable! The "Please Turn Me Over" at the end is because the track was on the end of one of the original vinyl album sides! Still got this lot on vinyl and play them now and again...I like the CDs but nothing beats that Vinyl nostalgia!

My son broke me out of military hospital to go to this concert because he knew I loved E.L.O. Myself and a fellow Royal Marine used to sing their songs when we were under fire in both Iraq and Afghanistan to take the stress out of the situation for the younger lads. He had been killed at the same time I was wounded, so my son knew seeing them in Hyde Park would give me a bit of a pick me up.
@mrk80504 жыл бұрын
Jeff Lynne wrote nearly all of the songs by E.L.O. In 1981 I joined the Royal Marine Commandos on my 17th birthday, I served for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and other more specialised groups until I was invalided out after my last posting to Afghanistan. I grew up listening to bands like E.L.O., Queen and Thin Lizzy, and yes I saw them all Live :) !!! Myself and a fellow old timer in the Royal Marine Commandos used to sing their songs when we came under fire to calm the younger lads by taking their minds off the incoming fire, yes they thought we were nutcases. After we had finished our assignment or patrol and we had returned to base, either in Iraq or Afghanistan, we would sing E.L.O.s' song "I'm Alive". I also sang it at his funeral which put as smile on his widow's face. I recommend you listen to both "I'm Alive" and "Livin' Thing", you could also try "Turn To Stone", "Don't Bring Me Down". But before all of the dozens of E.L.O. songs you listen to you must watch Jeff Lynne's ELO - Mr. Blue Sky at Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park. It was on the 14th of September, 2014 when my son broke me out of military hospital to go to this concert. My fellow old timer had been killed at the same time I was wounded, so my son knew seeing them in Hyde Park would give me a bit of a pick me up. He also did it again and took me to Glastonbury in 2016, which you should also watch E.L.O at Glastonbury in 2016 After being declared fit I saw reassigned to a different Regiment and returned to Afghanistan in 2015. My team were patrolling the mountain villages when we came under aggressive sustained fire. We managed to get the civilians inside and under cover while returning fire, and managed to call in for air and ground support. The village was being attacked on 2 sides so it made it easier for the 4 of us to defend using "fire and move", and the occasional grouping fire tactics. There were between 30 to 40 Taliban attacking, trying to press harder, that's when I heard a crack followed by a ringing deafness. And at that moment my career as an active duty Trooper ended, apparently an RPG round hit a wall 5 feet away from me I was thrown and through the air about 20 feet. The woman of the house dragged me into her home as I was struck by 2 rounds, and my legs and lower back were on fire. She is the bravest person I have ever known. Between her and her oldest daughter they kept me alive for 25 minutes until the area was reclaimed and safe for a helicopter to come in and retrieve me. But all I remember about that was holding her hand and refusing to let go, so she and her 2 daughters were flown out with us. There is a happy piece of news as to how I've ended up mainly wheelchair bound. The wonderful women who saved my life now lives here in the U.K. almost next door to me. If they had been left in Afghanistan the Taliban would have killed them after the village had been left by our rescue group, My Commanding Officer put a huge amount of pressure on our Ambassador and the Home Office to get them relocated to England, also my daughter and son sponsored them. Now they live in a house 5 doors away from me, and I am kept very much in check by my second "adopted" daughter and her two daughters. So for all my fellow citizens of our planet who are sharing these uncertain time's, though things seem and are almost unbearable with the terrible loss and suffering so many are going through, we as a human race will make it through the epidemic. We just can't loose our humanity. A little bit more icing on the cake of life is that I took Both my daughters to see Jeff Lynne's ELO: Wembley or Bust on the 24 June 2017. Now my daughters Dawn and Laaibah now have the joy E.L.O. can put in your heart when you need it, plus the other 59,997 people who were there enjoyed it too. You can find the concert on here too. I do have a lot of physical disabilities an suffer from PTSD and depression, and in 2015 I had a daughter, 2 sons and 4 grand children. When I was still going through long hospitalisations on many occasions and massive bouts of mental pain I would always look towards my family for strength, and they always gave it to me, my 2 sons, two daughters and 7 grand children. So please don't ignore, belittle your or anyone else's fears or any kind of mental distress. Everybody deals with things that affect them in different ways, just be there for them and let people in to your life's too.

Jeff Lynne talked about how he came up with this after he locked himself away in a Swiss chalet attempting to write ELO's follow-up to A New World Record. "It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks."

ELO - Electric Light Orchestra - were one the best bands that came out of the 70s. They were hugely popular here in Oz too, well into the 80s. So many fabulous songs - Don't Bring Me Down, Rockaria, Roll Over Beethoven, Living Thing, Evil Woman, Turn to Stone, Hold on Tight, Rock 'n Roll is King, etc, etc. Then Jeff went on to form The Traveling Wilburys with Roy Orbison. et al, another great band.

Wow! I know this song quite well, but never saw it performed live. Jeff Lynne's writing and production was SO complex, sometimes including not only the band, but an entire orchestra, and not just back-up singers, but a full choir. He made all the pieces fit together beautifully during production, but I'm interested to see here how this song is done LIVE. ... Oh, ok -- So I see he HAS a whole lot of other musicians (if not an entire orchestra) and other singers as well.

So glad you enjoyed that. For those of us who have been listening -- and LOVING -- ELO/ Jeff Lynne for the past 40+ years, we know well how fabulous the music is. We also know that Jeff is an absolute genius. The proof is in the music: ELO got its start in the early 1970s and is still going strong, still loved and appreciated by so so so many. In fact, they've done at least three huge tours in the last handful of years (two of which I attended) and I think they've sold out every concert. Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZPKaZSLo5mMoaM

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Light_Orchestra_discography 50 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...

I got to see him last year, as well as The Eagles last year too. Just... Sublime. Completely.

Seeing as you follow the lyrics so closely I thought you might have wondered why the pianist said "Please turn me over" towards the end? Answer, this was the last track on side one of the vinyl album Out of the Blue.

Nope. Side 3 of the double album.

I lived on ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and Pink Floyd when I was in my teens back in the 80's. They were my bread and butter in music

While trying to write and record songs in Switzerland it rained and rained. Then the sun came out and this was his response.

Ever wonder what the elderly pianist actually said at the very end of the song? He said "Please turn me over"....meaning at the time when the studio version of the song was released, the song was part of a double LP release. It was the last tract on the front side of the second LP disc, and the words at the end of the song was to instruct the music listener to flip the disc over to its backside to continue to hear the rest of the album.

Just a am addendum to your trivia: The elderly pianist speaking those words is the same Richard Tandy who originally played piano on the recording of the album and who has played with Jeff through the years.

How lucky I was to see ELO live in Pittsburgh in '78. It was an incredible show. Please check out more of their stuff, India. You'll love it!

ELO was huge in the 70's. I remember hearing their other hits on the radio back then but for some reason not this one. Perhaps because the song wasn't well suited for AM pop radio while their others were. No matter, "Mr. Blue Sky" was a perfect song for FM radio. I bought the record a few years later and took it to a party but then got the disks mixed up with somebody elses copy of Meatloaf "Bat out of Hell." So packed away in a box I've got a copy of "Out of the Blue" (the double album this song is from), where one of the vinyl disks is ELO and the other Meatloaf!

@ShariSez1 Perhaps. Back then "Top 40" ruled AM radio and what is now called "classic rock" ruled FM radio, which is where you'd hear deeper album cuts and the like. ELO scored a bunch of Top 40 hits as well as crafting great FM friendly tunes like "Mr. Blue Sky." I suppose you might say they managed to crossover. The last ELO hit I remember hearing on AM radio was "Don't Bring Me Down." That came out around the time I moved onto FM radio. I was in sixth grade.

Jeff Lynde and ELO, amazing! Saw them at SAP Center in San Jose in July. 2 thumbs WAY UP. People use the term "musical genius" too easily but Lynde just might be. Closest thing weve ever seen to the Beatles

He's Britain most prolific composers, writing most of the songs and playing most if not all the instruments in his studios, find the documentary on him, watching it is a must for E.L.O fans. Even produced the Beatles 😁
