There's even Karjakin, who was given the title Minister of Defense because defensive chess is viable back in the days. It's only with the introduction of Alpha Zero that people starts to throw theory and principle away to get that W. Most noticeable witht he addition of AI would be Dubov's playstyle.

I could be wrong, as I'm not a computer or chess-engine. But, during the hypothetical line @ 10:39, it would appear that capturing the white rook at F2 is MUCH more logical if you use your bishop as opposed to your knight. It comes with check, it can't be captured, and the knight is in a very good square as it can both attack or defend from it's current location.
