I know exactly what you mean. This song, and especially that line used to tear my heart out after my high school girlfriend and I broke up. I was never able to have a serious relationship after her. I guess it's God's timing because we got back together six years later while I was still in the military. Now we will have been married 16 years in March

His name is Eddie Vedder. By the way a lot of this performance is improvised on the spot. Some of it is not in the album version of the song, and yes the song is a breakup song with one of his girlfriends.

I've always thought that Eddie Vedder sings like he's got a bomb inside him and he's trying to stop it from exploding. I think he's calmed down a lot since then, but back in the day he always had this incredibly urgent stage presence like he had to keep something under control. When you combine that with his lyrical writing, his incredible voice and the genuine emotion he feels for his songs, it leads to awesome performances like this one.

It is one of my faves as well, as well of one of my mother's. She passed away 2 years ago from colon cancer. She had asked my husband to make her a music file of all her favorite songs on his IPod for her that she could listen to during her deathbed process, her decision was to be on hospice, but to die in her own home. I was her main caregiver and the morning of the day she passed I had her music playing and this song played. She had become unconscious the night before, but I still played her music knowing she could hear it. After the song had stopped, I asked "Mom, do you want to hear it again?" and she nodded yes! I told her it was such a beautiful song. I replayed it for her, and held her hand and sang along with Eddie. I just held her hand and stroked her arm softly. This song now carries a different meaning for me, and I will now treasure that moment with her and this song playing for both of us. ❤

Pearl Jam's secret weapon is Jeff Ament. People don't realize it on first listen, but his bass lines make the songs so much better. Welp...Now you gotta check out Nirvana! In 1991, after everyone was officially done with all the Glam Metal ballads, Nirvana released their album Nevermind and it became one of the most impactful albums of all time and lead the way for a new genre called Grunge. The biggest bands of the Grunge movement were Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. The movement was such an anomaly because it wasn't larger than life and over produced, in fact, it was quite down to earth and under produced most of the time, and that was a better grasp to handle after a decade of over-the-top commercialised music. And it only lasted three year, tragically ending in 1994 when guitarist and vocalist of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide by a shotgun blast to the face (though sources may vary on whether or not it was a suicide or a homicide). Kurt was described as the voice of Generation X and when he died, it impacted EVERYONE! Pretty much any of those four Grunge bands are a must to listen to, but Nirvana is the best to start with.

@@Chyll07 80 percent of all popular music is is about relationships between men and women. Love lost, yearning, pain etc. This song has a more dark tone when it comes to lyrics and the music itself compared to country. Pearl Jam was a grunge band although this is more or a rock, melodic, sad, depressed ballad. It is dark and does not like country at all. I hear no twang in eddie vedder's voice. His voice is raw in this song. Some of their songs did have some folks elements later on, but this record does not have that style at all. And folk on is not country.

singer is eddie vedder pearl jam showed up on the radio in early 1990s with soulful vocals and topnotch guitars i always thought this song was about a friend of the band who died, but after doublechecking wikipedia just now i see its a combination of things before eddie was in the band they didnt have a singer, and had the song without lyrics, eddie wrote the lyrics (1990) while traveling to meet the band after they sent him a demo tape while searching for a singer also eddie says the vibe of the song was partially inspired by a song called "western sky" (1988) by a band he liked called american music club kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4mvnKBohMp0ptk commenters say that the westernsky song vibe is itself inspired by another song called "northern sky" (1971) by nick drake kzbin.info/www/bejne/noCYdZKKj8l0kKc

Your Dad’s reaction to this video was my favorite reaction video. I think they took it down but it inspired me to start my own reaction channel. Nice job.

I was 23 when Pearl Jam originated.. and I went to buy their CD Ten and this song opened a revelation in me I nvr knew existed. I went through a break up at that time and I wrote my first poem to this song, because it brought me to tears. Now I'm a published poet of 6 books, and I owe it all to Pearl Jam's Black.. this song is still captivating almost 30 years later. I love seeing the younger generation now accepting what to me was true music in that era.

Eddie Vedder was the voice in my head through high school. Especially the song played over and over through so many circumstances of my life. Eddie Vedder‘s voice reaches deep and you feel every bit of emotion, you are so right. This first album TEN, Every song hits hard. His motion and stage presence and the sound of his voice was so sexy. Many albums follow. You’ve got a listen to Jeremy, even flow, anything on this album. You can still follow him on IG at Eddie_vedder today! Love how move to her by him. Got caught with you listening to guns and roses and I haven’t stopped following your journey sense. Love it

The guy in the hat is the bass player, Jeff Ament, and he slaps. They're all big into basketball, too....original band name was Mookie Blaylock, and their first album, "Ten" is called that because that was Mookie's jersey number.

Pearl Jam has a lot to offer, always soulful. You need to check out Yellow Ledbetter, Sirens, Given To Fly and Just Breathe to name but a few. You won't be disappointed in any of the ones I listed.
