Ah, the 1950s. I saw this fight on black and white TV when I was a kid (now 86.) So every so often they would say, and show. which fighter was wearing which color trunks. As if we needed to know that. The innocent years.

Lamotta was a very courageous fighter.
@joep8787Ай бұрын
LaMotta was one tough dude. Very much like Carmen Basilio, who also had some epic fights with Robinson. That said, I'd rather be a boxer who was hard to hit than one who could take a beating and stay on his feet.

One of the greatest matches in history. Two experts each anticipating the other's next move until it becomes a kind of ballet, or dance. This is sublime. Also, go to the public library and request via interlibrary loan a copy of A. J. Liebling's book in the early 'fifties The Sweet Science, and read it. This is the history of that era by one of the greatest journalist/ essayists ever.
@jamesanthony568125 күн бұрын
One of the greatest matches? It was completely one-sided, no? Give LaMotta his due for standing up to that punishment, but the fight was called The St. Valentines Day Massacre.

Interesting prequel to this story. My Godfather, Steve Belloise, originally had the title shot against the champion Marcel Cerdan, but LaMotta took a dive against a black fighter, Billy Fox. the Mob made money and Jake was rewarded with by the Mob guys who bumped my uncle and got the shot for LaMotta. Cerdan dislocated his shoulder in the first round and LaMotta won the fight, LaMotta said he would fight the winner of Robinson Belloise fight. Robinson beat Belloise and then beat LaMotta. My Uncle had suspended his boxing career to join the US Navy passing up a title shot after Pearl Harbor. Steve Belloise a great gentleman and patriot.

Kinda skipping most of everything for the highlights threw off a lot of things that mattered in the fight. Still a good showcase of how old time boxers really were like warriors in the ring
@billbeliakoff5589Ай бұрын
Robinson never sent LaMotta to the mat in any of their fights so that was a "technical knockout". Not a true knockout.

@@blkmamba40 In which of their 6 fights did Sugar Ray send Jack to the floor? You may have a strong opinion, but that's not knowledge.

Yes not a true knockout but a judged knockout to end the fight before someone seriously gets hurt. Boxing was way more brutal and people could die in the ring if taken too far
@blkmamba40Ай бұрын
@@PeterPan-nh7yx I have watched many fights I have watched many knockouts. I have boxed. I have never heard of a technical knockout not being a true knockout. LOL...This has nothing to do with boxing but has to do with you seeing your man beaten by Robinson neither I nor boxing can help you with that.
@WaferBrikАй бұрын
@@blkmamba40 Lol, true. Any doubters just need to check a site like boxrec. For example, David Tua is listed as winning 52 fights, 43 by way of knockout. But a bunch of TKOs are included among those KOs. That's the way they always do it.

Ray Robinson had longer arms, and he took advantage of that with a lightning fast left jab and great boxing skills. Love the fact that Jake LaMotta never retreated, was great at dodging Robinson's rights and had a nice double left jab.
