Six weeks before this fight, Quarry had a tuneup bout with Joe Alexander in the Garden, got surprised by an embarrassing flash knock down in the first before taking care of business soon thereafter. Quarry's biographer (Hard Luck) identified that fight, as when Quarry became an over the hill fighter, surprising after he demolished Earnie Shavers just five months earlier, boxed circles around Ron Lyle, Larry Middleton, Tony Doyle in 1973. Manager Gil Clancy was pissed at Jerry during this fight, spent an entire training camp getting Quarry to circle to his lefr, away from Frazier's lethal left hook. The fight begins, Quarry gets in trouble, starts moving to his right (!). After a couple of rounds, Clancy, in frustration, was asking Quarry, between rounds, which is your left?!?! One popular analysis of Quarry was he was distracted or not strong mentally, some demons shaking his approach to fighting. Patterson, after their first fight, said Jerry was using only 35% of his ability. His first manager, father Jack Quarry, was widely pilloried as being a bloodless reptile throwing his son in the ring with a Great White Shark if the money was right. Added to his was a huge parasitical family sponging off his wealth, a huge entourage following him to training camps and fights living off his tab. Nine months after this fight, Jerry agreed to fight Ken Norton by phone, stoned on cocaine, on ten days notice? Put up a hell of a fight but took an equally frightful beating. Always thought Frazier clubbed Quarry like a caveman beating dinner while Norton stabbed him into oblivion with pin point laser punching. Not sure which fight left a worse imprint on his face. After the Frazier bout, media noticed you could see Quarry's eyeball through the side of his eyelid.
@josephshields2922 Жыл бұрын
Look what Frazier did to Chuvalo. George had never been stopped and Joe broke his cheekbone with a left hook causing his eye to drop down under the bone. Frazier has got to be one of the hardest hitters. He avoided the heavyweight tournament to replace Ali and then knocked the winner cold in 5 rounds.He knocked Eddie Machen out of the ring in the first round. Don't forget the 14th round Ali knockdown. He is underrated due to his losses to Foreman.When he beat Ali he was undefeated and they were calling smokin joe the greatest.

Jerry Quarry is one of the saddest stories in the annals of boxing. He took more beatings in the ring than he should have. The boxing commissions never should have permitted him to continue boxing after it was evident that Quarry was suffering from side effects of these beatings. Yes & that's amazing isn't it, some fighters are others kryptonite & to others the same dude is a easy fight for them. Not that Jerry was easy 👍

I highly doubt that. Frazier was a beast and was only floored by George Foreman in his career due to Foreman's height and arm length. If Quarry kicked Shavers ass, Frazier would've done the same...
