#1 It’s not everyone who gets to wake up to their own personal earthquake. A big, hairy, smelly Outcast earthquake named “Alvin the Treacherous”. Unfortunately, since getting knocked unconscious can leave you prone to a lot of different things, I’m one of those people. My aching head feels dense, like it’s overstuffed with wool. The fact that I seem to be hanging over a shoulder doesn’t make my night any better, to be honest. However, broken prosthetic aside, I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to stand on my own anyway. I would appreciate the lift, but the problem is, as I come to realize with every brain-rattling stomp the man takes, is that we’re going in the wrong direction. I can hear and feel him slashing through the undergrowth as he jogs, cursing and muttering about getting to his ship and having to wait for the members of his party that aren’t dead. Hold it…his ship? So that’s where we’re headed. Oh, perfect. After all the fighting and the bloodshed and a narrow possibility of escape, I’m still going home with Alvin. I’m in no shape to resist any more. I’m too dizzy, in too much pain. Alvin could overpower any escape attempt simply by lifting a finger. No, I’ll have to keep quiet and wait for the right moment, for when he’s off his guard and vulnerable…but to do what? Alvin jerks to a sudden stop, causing my entire upper half to slam into his armored back. As you can imagine, this does not feel good. My head and face have already taken enough abuse tonight. I don’t know how much more of this I can handle. For half a moment, as pain zings through every nerve and stars explode beneath my eyelids, I yearn for the cool respite of senselessness to wash over me again, only to be jostled around twice as much as before when he bolts. Must’ve heard something, is all I can gather in this state. Not many fully-grown Viking men, especially hulking bullies with anger issues like Alvin, are easily frightened. I don’t need full use of my frazzled faculties to guess that he’s running from something large, scaly and definitely not very cute and cuddly at the moment. Night Furies are funny that way when angry. Well, maybe “funny” isn’t the right word here... My suspicions are confirmed by Toothless’s howling scream that sends us packing again. It’s a rare and chilling experience to hear the rage-filled call he usually holds back for special occasions like this. It reverberates between the trees above the lesser clank of weapons and panicked, stumbling men. They’re headed this way, Toothless and Astrid, and causing a riot in the remaining ranks. I hope to Odin that I won’t be taking that unplanned trip to Outcast Island after all. I then notice the violent crack of twigs and dead leaves beneath Alvin’s boots has been replaced with the crunch of surf-beaten pebbles. We’re on the beach. I don’t have much more time. …Or do I? Alvin digs his heels into the ground, bringing us to a standstill where the waves meet the island. Even above the unceasing pound of the sea, I can hear someone screaming a name. Make that Astrid screaming my name. As much as I’d love to answer, to let her know I’m still alive and that her efforts haven’t been completely in vain, I’ve got to maintain the ruse of unconsciousness. It may be the only chance we have left. The man takes a step backwards as the chaos arrives. Astrid is hurling curses, voice growing hoarse while Toothless snorts and bellows. The two remaining members of Alvin’s group splash around us to cower behind their leader. “Shoot them, idiots!” he roars. “Get’em off our tails for good! I didn’t come here expectin’ all of ya t’be outmaneuvered by a skinny brat!” Is he talking about me or Astrid…? No matter. Someone else is about to die. The time has come… Before I can convince my limbs to move, bowstrings twang and I’m rolled off Alvin’s shoulder, finding myself right-side-up, but in no better shape than I was half a second ago. An arm thicker than any human’s should be (and that’s saying something, considering…well, Vikings) wraps tightly around my chest, followed by the unpleasant sensation of cold, jagged iron pressing into my throat. This is not part of the plan. More arrows are released. Unable to stand not knowing if Astrid and Toothless had escaped them any longer, I crack open one eyelid. It’s just enough to catch a glimpse of two figures-one a mass of black and wings, the other small, blonde and quick-duck behind a large boulder farther up the beach. “What now-” one outcast starts. “Now we get back on our ship and take home our prize.” The shot of poisonous triumph he injects into the last word sends chills through my nerves. “But…” “But what?!” “Won’t the dragon just blow our boat to bits if we shove off?” “You sayin’ you’d rather stay here?” “Well, no, but…we’ve lost nearly everyone. W-wouldn’t it be better just to…you know, go home, regroup and come back for the boy later?” “Besides,” put in the other man, “I ‘ear bringin’ a ‘iccup aboard is bad luck. That’s why we’ve had such a rough go in the first place. I’m tellin’ you, the kid’s-” “ENOUGH!” shouted Alvin, seeming even to silence the sea for a moment. “I’m beginnin’ to wish it were you two blathering numbskulls we left dead on the…” The rest of his tyrannical rant remains a mystery as I’m released and dropped unexpectedly into the sticky, wet sand. The cold is shocking, of course, but it’s nothing compared to the almost unbearable wriggle of seaweed invading my ears and seeping down the neck of my shirt with the feeble remains of every wave crawling up the shore to touch me. I’m in the process of wondering whether or not I’m close enough to the surf to be in danger of drowning when the argument takes a sharp dive. It’s all I can do not to flinch and let out a frightened yelp when Alvin stabs his sword into the sand uncomfortably close to my head. The future isn’t looking so bright for the two leftover henchmen, but perhaps I can prolong their punishment. Twisting sideways, I grasp the massive hilt, wrenching it from the earth in a surprising rush of adrenaline and desperation. Alvin barely has a moment to register what’s happening before I take a swing. I’m not exactly aiming for anything in particular, but judging by the sickening thud and the scream that follows, I’ve hit something important. The Outcast leader collapses, howling and writhing and drops of blood bloom in the water around me. Everything is one big blur and sliding quickly downward. I’ve done what I can and the rest is up to Fate… Or maybe it’s up to Toothless? A well-aimed blast of plasma explodes not more than five feet from me, sending those left standing toppling over. I on the other hand, push up to one elbow and nearly shed tears of relief at the sight of my two most trusted companions charging down the beach toward us. Toothless is aglow with purple fury, building up for the final shot. Astrid is screaming again, louder and more terrifying than I think I’ve ever heard. Just as I comprehend that I should probably roll over and clear out of their way, someone seizes me by the shirt and yanks me roughly upward. The last thing I feel before the end is the vicious bite of iron through my unprotected flesh. …

#2 If this is what Valhalla’s all about, then you’ll hear no complaints from me if I somehow get sent in the opposite direction. It’s pitch black…wet…smells overpoweringly like decaying seaweed and fish guts. And the noise. I’d always assumed, just like the next Viking, that the pain ended as soon as you crossed that bridge of no return. Nope. Other than the smell, all I can comprehend is screaming. Screaming, screaming, screaming, inches away from my face. It attacks my aching brain, making my nerves spark and prickle. I just wish they would stop and leave me in peace… “Hiccup, please, no…” Wait…what? “Toothless! S-stop them! STOP…” Instead of the fierce shock of light, I’m accosted by something thick and warm slopping frantically against my shoulder and the side of my face. It stings terribly, but the small growls and croons that accompany it are full of the most intense worry and concern. “TOOTHLESS, NOW!” Sucking in a sharp gasp, my eyes snap wide open to Astrid’s shaking silhouette hunched over me, one arm extended outward. When the dragon ignores her, she gives an enraged snarl, springing to her feet and charging in the direction of the sea. Finally, it occurs to me that it really is over, but not quite in the way I’d been thinking a few moments earlier. I’m still here. So are Astrid and Toothless, as is every injury I’ve experienced this evening. But no amount of physical pain can match the agony flooding my chest as I listen to Astrid hurl everything from profanities to actual stones at the retreating Outcast ship. With the help of a nuzzling, much relieved Toothless, I clutch at the cut running along my shoulder and roll to my stomach. She shrieks threats and curses until her voice gives out entirely and the full force of it all brings her to her knees where she heaves and vomits into the soggy sand. Feeling as though I should do something, I stagger to my one foot, clinging to Toothless. On nothing but my last shreds of strength, we hobble out to her. “A-Astrid…?” I venture quietly, laying a hand on her shoulder. She starts at my unexpected presence, then collects herself enough to slap my hand away. “Please, Astrid-” “Stop,” she snaps and as she turns, I see that her face is flushed and wet with glistening tears. Tears of anger, fear and pain. “Just stop, Hiccup! You always do this. Always!” “I’m…I’m sorry-” She stands, towering over me like a furious mountain, stiff with an overabundance of emotion. “No! Saying ‘I’m sorry’ doesn’t cut it this time. What, d’you think you’re invincible or something, going out like that without telling anybody after your father, the CHIEF, specifically told you to stay put? Why? Why do you always have to…” Her grinding teeth bring her to a momentary standstill, which she quickly fills by hopping onto Toothless’s back and assuming my usual place in the saddle. “No, Astrid, I was just trying to…” “To what? Get yourself killed? Start a war? Because that’s very nearly what you just did. Don’t you even think before you go running off headed for trouble? Don’t you ever stop to consider any lives besides your own that might be affected when you pull these idiotic stunts?” I have nothing to say in defense. All I can do is stare, stewing in my own harrowing pool of guilt and blood. “Get on.” She indicates the place behind her with a jerk of her head after an intense pause. “We have to get back to the village. Maybe with some backup we can still catch up with them.”
