Auto-updating wp core is not always good. I'd only allow it for Minor updates, never for Majors.

Thanks for that note! Yes, you always want to be careful. The auto core updates are delayed in order for the WP Engine team to test them thoroughly, and there is also regression testing in place to ensure a smooth transition. We get emails from time to time that a core update didn't work and that it was reverted for us to take a look!

@@teamwpventure What software update platform/service are you using? You said it's not WPE's Smart Plugin Manager. I'm generally wary of these. Thorough testing takes time and is based on much more than "is the site down" or "does something look broken on a particular page". Plugins do so many things, many only on the backend, there's no reliable way to automate. And, I haven't seen a way to auto-update only Minor versions of Plugins (which can be done for WP Core). And like WP Core, I'd never want to auto-update a plugin to a Major version, on a Prod site. That's what Staging sites are for. And the idea of simply restoring from a backup isn't always simple, you could lose anything done on the site (by staff, members, visitors, customers) since the backup was taken.

@@htz70 thanks for those thoughts! Yes of course, those things are pertinent to think through. For security reasons we don't talk a lot publicly about the update software that we use. And yes, to your point, automated plugin updates can be tricky. We only use automated updates on minor updates and on less-important plugins. The big plugins or updates are done manually by our team! ​@@teamwpventure It's a shame you gatekeep what plugin manager you use, if you feel it's a better solution. I do like the idea of the regression testing though from WP engine, does your solution included that? I wonder how well that works on a site with hundreds or thousands of pages. Otherwise very useful video though, thank you.
