St Lucie River light tackle fishing | and river trolling for big fish

My plan was to fish for Sheepshead around bridges and docks on the St Lucie River, but they just weren't biting. Fortunately I caught some Croaker and Mangrove Snapper for dinner using jigs and live shrimp. Also some small jacks and a Ladyfish all on ultra light tackle. I have a habit of trolling a plug anytime i'm going through minimum wake zones especially in deep channels, and under bridges. On my way out by a bridge my Yozuri Crystal Minnow was slammed by a big Jack Crevalle. Always a fun day fishing on the St Lucie River.

Sailfish and Mahi on the jumps. Fish in the thumbnail is a Jack Crevalle AKA canal Tuna. If you tied one that size tail to tail with almost any other fish it would drown it. LOL

Great information. Can you share what line weight, rod and reel size and such? I would appreciate that.

When trolling a large plugs inshore like that I’m using 6-8000 size reels on heavy spinning rods. Line is 30lb mono or 50 lb braid with 60-80 lb fluorocarbon leader. For the light tackle under the bridge I use 3500-4000 size reels on light or medium rods, 30 lb braid and 30 lb flouro leader.
