Actually, "Move Closer to Your World" was first used in 1971-72 by WNAC-TV (now WHDH-TV) in Boston. Then the news director went to WPVI-TV in Philadelphia which was how this music became synonymous with that station's "Action News." WPIX actually first used "MCTYW" in 1977, three years after first adopting the name "Action News" for their newscasts.

This was the end of the "late-night" edition of "ACTION NEWS" (usually seen between 1:30 and 2am), with Ralph Lowenstein delivering the latest news off-camera, accompanied with slides and taped excerpts from the "10pm" newscast....whenever WPIX wanted to experiment with new fonts and graphics, they'd use the closing titles here.....

1) Apparently some tape from the 10 P.M. edition malfunctioned, thus the early ending. 2) It seems WPIX only had the instrumental "Move Closer to Your World" - and the way it was cut up, was how Ch. 11 had it. Note that the aforementioned Roy Whitfield was credited as one of the news writers.

I seemed to have read on a New Orleans radio and TV tribute site that he passed away in '87 . . .

P.S. It wasn't just Mr. Lowenstein; on some nights Bill Biery (the other main "Voice of WPIX") would be the offscreen anchor, and on other nights it would be Roy Whitfield. In short, at least three "off-camera" news readers (I don't know if Bill Littauer handled that end, I know he'd been an on-camera reporter in the '70's).

That's right, 'wm'- Lowenstein, Biery and Whitfield were rotating anchors on the late-night "ACTION NEWS" at the time, which was indeed Channel 11's last newscast of the day before signing off....

Apparently, from another portion of this newscast put up on YT, this was the ending of the June 5, 1980 late night newscast with an offscreen announcer (Ralph Lowenstein, of course) reading the news.

Ralph Lowenstein was one of WPIX-TV's (Channel 11's) main announcers back then. He usually was off-screen but occasionally would be on-screen (especially if doing a weekend newscast).

And prior to WPIX's going 24/7 in 1979, this "late-night" edition, with the format just as described, was their "sign-off" edition, a la KNBC in Los Angeles (as from a former KZbinr who got yanked, and can be seen on the 'tv-signoffs' site). After their "sign-off" news, they would air one of Richard Hughes' editorials or feedbacks, or an editorial reply, before signing off for the night.

The only question I have now is, what was the other theme music used pre-1977? I could swear, for example, that during the 1975-76 period when Joe & Pat Harper were anchoring the news, 'PIX used the same music from the "Superman" musical that WTOP-TV (now WUSA) used for many years on their "Eyewitness News" - but I could be wrong . . .

Actually WNHC now WTNH in New Haven used it before WPIX. I lived in Suffolk County back in the 60's & 70's & got both WPIX & WNHC so I remember clearly that WNHC was using it as early as 1971.
