The main counter argument against props getting nominations is game time - the fact they are replaced and so get fewer minutes. BUT - WHY?! Because World Rugby insist on 3 front row replacements. Which is fair enough - but then OF COURSE they play less minutes. So unfair to hold it against them.

So does him playing more minutes mean he has a better chance of being nominated than Ox? Of course not. Cause Rassie has the option of bringing on Steenekamp and others if need be for fresh legs or whatever the case may be.

There's some literature that you can predict the prestige of a position based on a couple of factors. Interactions with other players, visibility. I don't think it's focussed on rugby but you would expect based on this that loose forwards and halfbacks get all the praise and attention.

Couldnt agree more. I grew up in the 70s when people sang songs about the Pontypool front row and the scrum was an atacking weapon. They dont even ref the rules properly, putting the ball in at 45 degrees being a prime example

The reason Eben wasn't on most people's short list is because his normal standard of play is just phenomenal. I can't remember a game where played bad. Hence he doesn't stand out like others. 129 tests and still looks like he is in his prime. Insane!!

What does a prop have to do more than winning game winning penalties and being some of the most physical guys on the field. Heyman, Du Randt, Ox etc. Common world rugby!

The nominees had to come from Ireland and South Africa. Both teams are great but gees this Springbok team has been something else. It’s staggering to think that Rassie Erasmus has selected 50 players across all their tests this year. The depth is remarkable. All 4 are deserving. PSDT should win it and has been immense. The best loose forward this year and was even immense at lock too earlier in the year. Let’s talk about Ox though. There isn’t another prop in world rugby that even comes close to Ox at the moment imo. He stands alone at the top at the pile. Any props scrumming against him must have nightmares the night before. Ox would have been a worthy winner.

Ox for me wins. Hard position to really stand out in the game and rules these days and he has still managed with all the rule changes to make himself a giant in the game. Scrum he destroys and in the loose with his out the back passes to keep the backline firing. The attraction of Rugby has always been that there is a place for all body shapes and sizes . This is even more important for young players and players at amateur levels . One only has to attend a club game in rural South Africa to see that . Scrums are part of the game .
