Time erases all. It’s a bit heartbreaking to see something that I saw everyday while growing up go down in a heap. I felt this way when Lincoln elementary in Rock Island was demolished. I’m grateful for having grown up in the Quad Cities. It will always be home.

I remember seeing this in person, from the masonic home, and I couldnt see anything at all, and I looked down at my chromebook clock, waiting. It was 7:35, and I saw the bright orange fireballs. I saw the cables fall, and then the pieces of the bridge fell to the water, and hit the bottom of the river. I tried zooming in on my video, but it didnt turn out so well when I tried that lol. Seconds later, the bridge is gone, thick smoke standing in its place, and the building shook. The sound was very loud, with Windows screwed shut. The smoke cleared within minutes, and that was the first explosion I had ever seen in person. Even though I didn't see much, I still saw it, heard it, and felt it.

I am. I didn't drive as I was just a kid, but we used to cross that bridge to get to my grandma's house and I remember my dad paying toll. Until about 1970 or somewhere around there.

This really shows how HUGE the new twin bridges are! The first suspension bridge went up when I was very, very young; its "twin" went up when I was, gosh, prolly 10-12 years old, and it was wider (apparently because cars had started to be bigger) by about 1970, crossing the bridges was actually a little scary (cars had gotten bigger, for sure!) and now we have the new twin bridges, which are HUGE!

I never knew that, but then we didn't really use this bridge that often. I'm old enough to remember when you had to pay to cross the Centennial Bridge!
@tjcos8064

I remember my parents using paper tickets for the toll. On Centennial you would just toss a dime into the basket - there were always coins on the ground around it.

I would think they would at least drag all the cables out but I don't really know. How deep is the water there? Is diving restricted? Those cables and wreckage seem like they would be hella dangerous to divers.

They have to remove it and have the main navigation channel clear of all debris before reopening before the 24-hour permit expires.

The Mississippi is not a popular diving river. Its water is extremely clouded and murky from oak tannin. And the catfish grow real big. Our big fish tales have to say ‘van sized’ to be exaggerations

Not an implosion. Implosion is the opposite of explosion. The only thing that I can think of that can implode is a sinking submarine. Professional news writers should know the difference.
@myvmix
@myvmix Жыл бұрын
You're talking about objects being crushed from external forces like pressure crushing a submarine if it's too deep with a hull that can't withstand that depths pressure. They are on about an explosion that occurs within it , (imploded explosion) , (of any object), which enables the object or debris to collapse within it's own boundary. As opposed to exploding, (explosion), which would force the object to spread debris outside of it's boundary.
@Dr_KW
@Dr_KW Жыл бұрын
I agree with you . Technically, this is a controlled explosion. But some genius in the construction industry decided to call it "implosion" when the object debris field is not wide by design. Complete misnomer, probably they didn't understand physics 😂

Tough times. The explosive force of all of the explosions - I counted 15 separate explosions - were as big as 12-inch professional pyrotechnic salutes blasting in the air. Several hundred pounds of real dynamite and RDX did in that old bridge. The loudest explosions exerted about 150 dB of ear-shattering bangs!
